How does the idea of a campaign where the main protagonist(s) is sent from the real world (our Earth) to a fantasy world sound? I personally think it’d be pretty cool, but am not sure of which campaign setting it should be in...

I remember binging on that show for awhile; I used to have it on DVD. Come to think of it, that may have been what made me think of this to begin with.

It sounds pretty cool, I would run it in a 'smaller' fantasy setting, basically whatever is your favorite fantasy book series. But not to do it in anything too big like Faerun, where there are too many big heroes stomping about.

Damn, I was gonna set it in the Forgotten Realms setting. After all, there are a few people from Toril who have indeed come to Earth, so why not have it be the other way around?

If you really want to, you can. It just means it's not a super big deal, and getting back home will be relatively easy.

Well, here’s the real question: The Gate spell opens a gate between two planes of existence, but would a Gate between two alternate Material Planes be beyond 9th Level? Now let THAT thought sink in. :smallamused:

I don't know, it's just that there are a couple characters in the setting who know how to do it. So the quest (if getting home is the objective) becomes more about arranging a meeting with those characters than trying to figure it out yourself. Which in of itself can be difficult, even next to impossible.

What I don't like about it is it just makes the PCs less special.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a Gate spell. Portals could exist too, either as something that's always open, or that only open if some particular trigger occurs (which could be different going in different directions).

Earth isn't in a different Material Plane. It's one of the many worlds of the one Material Plane, meaning it can be reached via teleportation if you have the right teleportation circle's code.

You'll probably end up in Ed Greenwood's kitchen, though.

I have proof of otherwise: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Earth

My suggestion is:
Use the D&D Cartoon as the starting base.
(I agree with a Homebrew World, where the PCs stand out)

Ask your players if they would be ok with starting out with no Classes (pre-rolled stats) and 'discovering' their Class through RP and experimentation. (This is optional, but can be fun)

Run the game normally to at least 3rd level.
(Social encounters in town, Exploration, Dungeon Crawling, and Monster fights.
Grab your favorite Module if you don't already have a Base Idea)

Then grab and convert Planescape and have the PCs going to each Plane (the object needed to open the 'natural Portal' to each Plane being a quest) getting the piece of an item that will open the Portal "Home".
(If this is even their goal, anymore - if not, the item closes a nasty Huge Portal - Demons, Illithid, etc)
