Ran into this, and immediatly though, i want one as a house pet, traveling companion, mouser.

Pathfinder E1

Ignoring any attempts to give it spellbook treatment since it's perferably animate and sentitent, any attempt to record anything longer then a cantrip will inevitably fail due to instability on the part of the creature/construct/thing with moving pages.

Should be be formed with familar or improved familiar in mind, possibly with the figment Archetype, or as a magic creature pet, or a golem type creature.

Should be capable of eating anything from a common house fly to a young cat by grappling. Be aware, and sensitive about getting it's paper ruined.

Perferably stick as closely to the rules as possible, but will understand deviation.

I considered tiny or quadreped tiny variant of mimic, animated construct, variant of homonculus, and a creature called a guardian scroll created through calligraphy, and an intelligent magic pop up book.

Notice the book's abillity to form a paper kraken on top of it's pages, without loosing any mass or distrupting the page's surface.
Would make a killer story book, and if able to rearrange writting and ink, a excellent story element.

I shall dub it...the booktopus.

I shall dub it...the booktopus.

I see your comment and find it inspirational. Isubmit a carnivorous Origami cethalopod with a paper version of stonemeld or earthglide.

I can see it changing colors and glowing to mimic writing or designs, crawling between books like a octopus, refilling ink bottles and evening mixing colored inks or salvaging ink spilt pages, using the wayer jet ability to jump between open books or catch flying creature.

Construct paper octopus, size small.
Use the scroll guardian and octopus/squid as the base, and give it earth elemental abilities based on paper. Glide as the basic irl paper airplane usually after darting. Can enter and exit most closed books, open or shift them aswell, but can only dart out of open pages or very thick books.

Consuming book eating pests and cleaning soiled books when possible, maybe even organizing them.

Possibly a fey that lives off quality books and love of books. Like all fey that have their potential immortality as long as they have a attachment to this world, books.

Mayhaps they are like shoe fairs to cobbler but for librarians and scribes. Afraid of being misunderstood or hunted, but meaning well and seeking only to protect their artificial habitats.

The name is a tad descriptive, perhaps something less mundande like perhaps like tome sprites, or shelf spirits both of which are worsethen yours.

What about a living (albeit shrunken) spell of prestidigitation?

A living spell is interesting, and mimics what we see in the picture, even if it's a tad too intracate for the RAW versions of prestidigitation.

The size is prestidigitation is about right for the image if you spread 1 foot cube into a amorphous volume. Not sure of actual living spell template or it's implications of size, just conceptualizing prestidigitation as sentient, helpful, and with indefinant duration.

It would probably fall short on strength, and the ability to hunt mice, not sure of any mental states for a living spell, let alone a cantrip version.

You could craft an origami/paper golem (Dragon #341), grant it rudimentary intelligence (Dragon #327) and, if possible, extra arms (Dragon #327, one of the prerequisites for the augmentation is that the construct must have a slam attack and paper golems have slash attacks, but it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to switch slam with slash in this case). Put the golem's skill points into Craft (bookbinding) and Profession (rat-catcher). Even without ranks, with 21 hp it should make swift work of most rats it will find in a library.

Total price: 8,750 gp (or 750 gp if you don't want it to be intelligent, or 8,600 gp if you want it with just two arms).

Why does that card want counters?

One of the few people qualified to reply to this thread right here:
Why does that card want counters?

I'd presume whoever made the card actually made a whole set, and "scrib counters" are a thing in that set.

First guess is that a scrib counter can be removed, but prevents the thing from being used again.

If anything, the book produces paper golems. Perhaps a combination of Minor Creation and Animate Objects?

Presumably to keep a running tally or interact with other cards that may noylt specify a +1/+1 counter for removal or transferance.

It's a poorly written joke card designed to interact with a specific card from a specific set, not sure how many other black rats were in worldwaker release.

Beyond that i can't vouch for the author's intent presumably in 2015.

Scrib Nibblers is the card intended to be counter if you find that helpful, it's a presumably communal rat with an apperent appetite for finished papper products.

I'm going to cross reference improved familiar stats and look at tradeing abilities.

Like the previous poster said, if the 0/1 flying book token creation is important to your version, i'd suggest a limited version of animate object(books) spell.

Now, if you want even better, go changeling and take the changeling wizard racial ACF from Races of Eberron that allows you to change your familiar into any other familiar you can take. That opens up every living spell at or under the spell sovereign's level limit, including spells that aren't on your normal list. Combine with Obtain/Extra Familiar, Improved Familiar, Draconic Familiar, etc, and it's kind of crazy all the different forms your best friends/slaves/XP sinks will have.

Given everything here I'm choosing animate object as a permanent construct.

Tiny, 1d10 hd, 1 construction point,book

d20pfsrd /bestiary/monster-listings/constructs/animated-object/

It's paper, we can take the flamable and maybe even slower (movement speed) flaws, it's a ambush predator.

That brings us to 3 construction points before spending extra, then it rapidly pulls away from concept without the ability to gain a construct familiar, and that a bit of a stretch for something i want independant.

----------------------------------------------------

Tiny ( intelligent construct, magic beast, minded ooze, or abberation) fey subtype maybe.
Str 8-12, dex 14, con 8 or 0, Int 12, Wis13, Cha8

Strong enough to grab and restraint similar sized creatures
Dex is sizable due to being small.
Con is low, it's made of paper.
Int is high enough to figure out profession librarian and bookbinding.
Wisdom is enough to know when to fix something and when to do nothing.
Cha it's got some ego but can be influenced.

I want to give it the slam, grab, constrict and improve grapple combo. 1 monster attack and 2 monster abilities, and a feat. It can fight a rat easy, or deny you a hand.

Give it the ability to paperglide as per earthglide ability. Allowing it to live in books and hid even in books being read.

The ability to temporarly alter text surface and glow, Magic 8 ball pages "You come here" reformes into "yes you you with the hole in his shirt on the left side"

It may alter pages as per silent image of any book it resides in.

Paper vunerabilities, specificaly dr/slash and vunerability fire.

There's a spell in...I want to say the BoEF, that allows you to holographically play out a story from words written in a book. Ostensibly for porn, but there's nothing preventing you from projecting Voyage of the Dawn Treader or other swashbuckling tales of daring do.

[edit] Ah. Animate image, illusion [figment], wiz/sorc 1.

Interesting idea, that is similar to silent image, complete mage.

I'll be back after 8 hours or so.

An Abberation of paper and ink, these simple creatures find themselves trapped on this this plane after conjuration mishaps. To survive they take forms based on the books they inhabit. Papermeld(su) can fully or partially occupy the same space as other types paper but not leather or other common types of bindings or covers.
