Laughing gulls wheel and chatter in the cloudless blue skies over the city of Gapport. Gapport is named for its location in the sole place where the eponymous cliffs of Steepwall Island cease over an area large enough to build a city.

The docks are bustling with all the usual business of a port. Fishmongers hawk their odious wares while longshoremen and stevedores struggle up gangplanks with loads of wheat, wool, and beef, and then struggling back off carrying iron and copper ingots from the mines and furnaces of Khazad or fine manufactured goods from Mithtol. One ship is carrying bales of spider-silk, likely from the Blowhole via Keina. Another is offloading pine logs from Danidor, destined to become masts for tall, proud ships.

Somewhere in all this commotion is a rather dingy half-timber tavern and boarding house, marked by a sign bearing a crude depiction of a seal. Inside, a grizzled halfing tends the bar, which is at this time of day occupied by only two figures: a middle-aged woman surrounded by empty shot glasses and a well-dressed wood elf nursing a glass of wine. Now, a number of curious individuals enter the bar.

Tanis walks in, a pep in her step and a whistle on her lips. She stops whistling when she enters, but still has a bright look. Hello! she says as she enters, approaching the bar. Something with a little sweetness and not TOO strong, if you would please, sir, she asks of the barkeep.

Outside the bar, Tanis is sitting unobtrusively on a crate, a short distance away. Close enough to keep an eye on the bar, should things go south, but far enough to avoid getting caught up herself.

Versana walks into the bar, and takes a seat next to Tanis. Something light, if you'd please. She turns to Tanis, and gives her a smile.

Tanis, seeing the human sit next to her, turns in her seat to face her. I'm Tanis. It's nice to meet you, Miss...

Looking at Tanis, Versana can see a slim and tall half-elf, dressed in an odd, patchwork sort of clothing. The shirt is old and faded, and has been repaired enough times to possibly no longer hold any of its original fabric, and while the pants are a little better, they're still patched up a lot. Around her neck is a medallion, suspended by a silver chain.

Versana, and the pleasure is all mine. Tanis herself sees a relatively tall woman with red hair and blue eyes, clad in chainmail that reveals her strong build, and with two longswords at her sides.

As Feldon enters the bar, he scans the room with piercing eyes. He stands with sandy blonde hair pulled back and what looks like a worn brown leather duster.

Spotting the fancy dressed woman drinking alone, he glides towards her and takes a seat at her side.

Rum! Feldon calls out, offering a side glance to the woman. After ordering, he eyes up the lady.

Do you have a name or can I call you mine?

When Tanis walks into the tavern, the bartender raises an eye at her exotic looks and her ragtag assembly of clothing, but clearly isn't too surprised, given this is a rather busy port. He replies to her request, saying, "I've got cider, ale, wine, and whiskey. Sounds like cider for you." If you choose to buy a mug of ale or cider, it will cost 2 pennies (One of the local currencies of Steepwall and analogous to a copper coin). A shot of whiskey will be 7 pennies and a glass of wine will be 1 shilling (analogous to a silver coin)

After Versana, who also got a look with her twin longswords and armor (hardly regular attire, after all), walks in and sits next to Tanis, the bartender says, "Something light? We've got ale and cider. Also whiskey and wine, but those aren't exactly light."

JNAProductions

Cider would be fine, she says, fishing out some copper coins. Not exactly local copper, but the money should be fine, right?

Once her cider is in front of her, she takes a long draught from it. Mm. Good stuff, Mr. Barkeep! I'll be sure to let anyone who asks know you've got good drinks here. But, as for you, Miss Versana-if you want the honorific, that is-what brings you here? And so well-armed too.

Brother Crawford walks smoothly into the tavern and finds his way to a small table towards the side of the room. He drops his bag on the tabletop and rests his walking stick against the wall away from his chair. He plops down on the chair and begins going through the sack on the table, searching for his coin purse.

When Feldon enters the bar and calls for rum, the bartender looks over at him with annoyance. "No rum. Cider, ale, whiskey, wine. What kind of fancy type are you with rum?" The wood elven woman, who has darker brown skin and hair, initially ignores Feldon to focus on her wine, but when he strikes with the cheesy pickup line, she looks over with a look of disgusted fascination. "I'm Aredhel. Before you go sit somewhere else, what's your name and who told you that line would work?"

The bartender will call over to Brother Crawford. "Hey, priest, what'll it be for you?"

Crawford has started pulling things out of his bag and setting them on the table. Some candles, a few sticks of incense, some bits of salted beef wrapped in cloth.

Oh, an ale would be fine. Also, I'm not sure I'll be needing one just yet, but do you have any rooms available?

Finally he finds the small purse at the bottom of the bag. Ah! There you are.

I wouldn't mind a glass of ale. Versana then turns to Tanis. I like that sass too.As for my attire, I'm a mercenary, you see. People hire me to help escort their goods.

After Crawford walks in and Tanis calls out to him, Versana joins in inviting him over.

I'm Versana, a mercenary for hire. I help escort ships and protect their cargo in case anyone tries to loot them.

Crawford laughs and accepts the hug from Tanis.
Oh, a hug would do me well. And I was lucky enough to know my family, my path was a choice. I have seen them some since I left, though it has been some time, and will likely be longer still.

He turns to Versana.
And you, Versana, do you have roots placed anywhere? Or are we but three wanderers sharing a road for a while?

Well played. Feldon says with a smirk. I was not expecting a woman with such class in a place like this.

Feldon glances over to the bartender and narrows his gaze before continuing with Aredhel.

Anyway, the name's Feldon Heard, and I'm the best... retriever... in the Archipelago. Feldon declares as he taps a finger on the bar. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Aredhel, but what brings a classy woman like you to this kind of establishment?

Xenoph0n
2019-04-03, 01:03 AM
Aredhel replies, "What would you know about class? Anyways, I would ask what you mean by, 'retriever', but I don't really care and I wasn't kidding about the sitting somewhere else. I've got some drinking to do. And come up with a better pickup line before you try hitting on anyone again." She downs the rest of her glass of wine and orders another, with a slight moue of distaste either at Feldon or the bartender.

Ethan's timidly walking down the street, perhaps attracting the gaze of the locals as the hulking silver dragonborn wades through the streets. He finds the tavern of which he used to frequent in his journeys. His hunger has felt insatiable for days, but he has felt no weakness from ignoring it. Missing a drink, he steps into the tavern, ducking habitually now after dealing with some low doorways. His sword clacks awkwardly against his back. He steps up to the bar and quietly asks with a light hiss. "Whisskey, pleasse." His gaze will meet the group who seem to be deep in conversation, after seeing the priest, he'll awkwardly look away and try to remain as casual as he can.

Tzalti enters the bar which is now getting quite full with newcomers and outsiders. To be fair it's a new tavern for him and he has been in Gapport a few times before. Work is slow at the moment though, people just don't trust the Lizardfolk.

His tattered leathers hang around him in some sort of 'clothing' manor a sharpened bone dagger at his waist but no other real weapons.

He nods to the halfling behind the bar, Whisssskey, two of. he manages to hiss out in common. Before handing over the coppers and downing the first. He plays with the second at the bar, swirling it around his glass. His tail curled around his feet in an attempt to keep it out of the way.

Feldon stares at Aredhel silently before disappearing.

Just outside the bar door, Feldon reappears and bends over, hyperventilating as he places his hands on his knees. After a few dry heaves, Feldon takes a seat on the dusty ground beneath. Clutching a pendant around his neck, he breathes in deep and closes his eyes, taking in the sun.

Feldon, figure things out mate.

Feldon will use one of his blinks to blink out of the bar.

The dragonborn looks a little spooked and looks around,
"Uhh... me? I'm..."
a small puff of chilled air escapes his nostrils and he turns to the woman.
"Frost. Who might you be?"

2019-04-03, 07:38 AM
Tzalti notices that there appears to be a group forming within the tavern and they are approaching newcomers. He wonders if they will have any work for him, he could do with the money.

He turns and leans against the bar, which bows slightly under his weight. His eyes roam across a bunch of elves and humans, not the best group for him to be around, but beggars can't be choosers.

One of the females, he thinks its a female anyway approaches a dragonborn to start a conversation. He hisses to "Frost" in Draconian A bit rude this one, insulting you and has only just asked your name.

Frost stares at the woman for a moment almost processing whatshe's saying.
"Just not used to being approached so casually. It's nice to meet you."
Ethan luckilyndid know Draconic before his transformation. He turns to the lizard,
"It's quite alright, she's just... confident? Who might you be?"
At this time it's worth mentioning that Frost is remarkably pale and doesn't have the silver shine to him. He's more of grey and could be mistake for a white dragonborn to the untrained eye.

Col.Straken
2019-04-03, 08:14 AM
Tzalti nods to Frost, he has only met a few Dragonborn in his time and knows they come in different colours much like Lizardfolk, but that is about it.

I am Tzalti, experienced sailor and water lizard. he lifts his arm showing his dark blue coloured skin, Perfect camouflage while swimming.

He starts speaking common again, quite well for a lizard. Do you have work for a sssailor? he asks Versana.

Arvanion walks into a tavern filled with people making small talk. He sits at the far end of the bar. Small talk is not what he needs, at least for now. "Do you have Elven Fire Wine, barkeep?"

As he waits for a reply, he slowly scans the room. Today is the first time he has been on land in over a year, but he feels that this is finally the right place to leave the ship and begin his search. First things first, though. A bottle of fire wine, or in lieu of that, Dwarven Brandy to help him remember. And forget.

And maybe, just maybe, he'll join someone for talking and laughing after that...

The bartender looks, curious, at Frost and Tzalti. He's seen dragonborn before, of course, but this one looks rather odd. And lizardfolk are extremely uncommon this far from the Mangrove Isles. He brings them their shots of whiskey without a comment, then asks Tzalti, "What's a lizard doing so far north?"

Arvanion enters the bar and asks for fire wine. The bartender is preempted from his standard response by Versana, but scoffs under his breath, glancing at Arvanion and the wood elf, and mutters, "What is it with uppity elves and their fancy wines?", then speaks up and asks, "Want wine or not, elf?"

Col.Straken

Crawford sets down his ale, a few streams of the beer trickling through his otherwise neat beard. He surreptitiously wipes them away and strides into the midst of the slightly anxious group of people.

Alright, that's about enough of that from all parties. Seems we're getting off on the wrong foot; plenty of room here for all.

And the truth is, the barkeep was not too offended to take my coin, which was gold, and keep it, even though the whiskey hr brought me is worth maybe a quarter of that. Isn’t that correct, Willen? Nor am I so uncivil as to ask him for my change.”

Feldon straightens and stares into Versana's eyes. I'm so confident because I know who I am, and I know my worth. I went to the greatest schools on Steepwall, received specialized trainings, and have learned to master my craft through the years. As I said, I'm the greatest... retriever on these islands. I could waste your time talking about it now, or just impress you on whatever adventure you're headed on. I will warn you, however. Don't fall in love with me. I have no interest in the rugged adventurous type.

Feldon motions to Versana's blades and nods slowly. Those are impressive blades though. Perhaps I could use your services just as well, he says slowly and softly, clearly impressed.

But that is one reason the Lizardfolk College exiled him and his family, they just wouldn't give up their old ways and traditions. Right here, Willen has some fish. They're good fish, but he didn't JUST catch them-they've been out of the water and dead for a while. Outside, on the docks, they have fish that they might've caught literally moments before-though probably a touch longer than that, but not by much! Now, if Willen was a greedy and unscrupulous man, he'd sell you the fish right here, never mentioning your other options. That's how he'd make the most money. Versana thinks for a second. I wouldn't know, seeing as I have no idea where this place is, but you never know when it comes to the sea. Things could stay peaceful like they are now, or we could end up in a massive storm.

Aldreth replies to Feldon, "Damn right you will, sonny boy!", still brandishing his marlinspike. When Frost offers his hand, he shakes it with an almost painful grip, remarkable coming from this old man. After Tzalti interjects, Aldreth says, "Lizards all over the place these days! Two right here, never thought I'd see the day! And what do you mean, well made enough?"

Edran, apparently resigned to the mispronunciation of his name, replies to Tanis and Versana. "It's about 70 miles south by southwest of here. Depending on the wind, it should take us about two days of sailing. Not too bad. And the weather's not too terrible around here, usually."

Good, good, Tanis comments. While I've got some sailing experience, I'd rather not be on open water TOO long.

The name thing's funny don't kill it after you started it ;)

Frost will return the grip just as firmly as the man, then step to the side and look out to the water, assuming it's visible from here. "I'm quite excited to be back on the water, but we should respect its' spontaneous nature and not overstay our welcome. Hand me a post on this vessel and I'll be a reliable asset."

Would Frost have any idea or familiarity of where those directions might be taking us?

Tzalti looks back at Aldreth and attempts a shrug, They look like they float. he says bluntly. Also, do not worry about a lack of wind, I can help with that to a point, and the water too. He knows he couldn't help in a full storm, but he could definitely make sure their passage is a little easier.

Edran says, "Well, no point in delaying. Shall we be off?" Aldreth leads you to the edge of the docks, where a large wooden boat, around 30 feet long at the waterline, sits in the water. It's clear to those who have sailing experience that this is a fishing boat, but quite a seaworthy one. It is an open (no cabin or belowdecks), gaff-rigged, clinker-built ketch with a jib. (Like this (http://heritage-23.org/images/h23_sailing_fast.jpg) but gaff-rigged, not a lugger. And yes, I am a massive boat nerd.)

Arvanion steps aboard with the easy confidence only a sailor can muster when boarding a boat. He walks directly to the tiller and places his hand on it possessively.

Edran, who has not yet gotten on the boat, hesitantly says, "You... you do realize that's how I keep us pointed in the right direction, right?" He points at the compass mounted on the bench that abuts the gunnel, right next to the tiller. "Anyways, we have some stuff to take care of first. Food, water, I don't even know if this boat is fully fitted..." Aldreth adds, "The boat's ready to sail, but you'll need water for sure. The young'uns these days, so impatient."

Compasses are a bit anachronistic in a pseudo-medieval setting, but I figure they make sense in a world like this.

Do you have water containers? Tzalti asks looking to see if he can spot any. I can provide endless water if you do. No need to find and trade for any.

If Tzalti is shown a recent sized container (ie. Water tight barrel) he will fill it with sea water and use Purify on it to remove the salt and make it safe to drink.

Tzalti takes the barrel and loads it onto the boat. He dips his taloned finger into the sea and lets a drop fall into the barrel. As it falls, it becomes a torrent and the barrel partially fills with pristine clean water. Will that last the trip? How much food will we need to last us? There may be no fishing spots on the journey.

I grossly overestimated how many litres a gallon is... 37 litres should keep a group of 8 good for two days if we ration sensibly.

Yup, maybe we should buy some food and water...
