In Out of the Abyss, the PCs might encounter a "Giant Rocktopus" (p.28).

The monster is described as a Giant Octopus that evolved to live on land. It has a few changes compared to the Octopus version, such as better mobility on land and rock camouflage.

Strangely enough, it loses its Hold Breath feature but keeps its Water Breathing feature.

As a result, not only is the Giant Rocktopus unable to breath air, it dies even faster on land than the Giant Octopus!

What absurdity is this?!

Dies right away? Nonsense! It will have died long before the PCs ever encounter it. They'll just find some mumified remains. Or possibly an undead rocktopus.

If a DM places a monster in a forest, but there are no PCs around to hear it, does it ever live?

If the DM decides that it's living, it is. And if the DM later decides that there's no monster there after all, then it never lived.

Reminds me of that old joke about the octopus at the bar that could play any instrument, until the night it encountered a set of bagpipes....
