View Full Version : Pathfinder Pathfinder Custom Race: Smart And Hardy Plants

This type encompasses humanoid-shaped vegetable creatures. Note that regular plants, such as those found in ordinary gardens and fields, lack Wisdom and Charisma scores and are not creatures, but objects, even though they are alive.

A plant race has the following features:

Plants have the low-light vision racial trait.
Plants are immune to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, morale effects, patterns, and phantasms).
Plants are immune to paralysis, poison, polymorph, sleep effects, and stunning.
Plants breathe and eat, but do not sleep, unless they want to gain some beneficial effect from this activity. This means that a plant creature can sleep in order to regain spells, but sleep is not required to survive or stay in good health.
Small races gain a +1 size bonus to their AC, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, a 1 penalty on combat maneuver checks and to their CMD, and a +4 size bonus on Stealth checks. Small races have a space of 5 feet by 5 feet and a reach of 5 feet.
The race has a base speed of 20 feet.
+2 Intelligence, -2 Wisdom; +2 Constitution, -4 Strength
Common and Sylvan as a base.
Members of this race have the ability to converse with plants as if subject to a continual speak with plants spell.

So, in total, that is:

-Low Light Vision
-Immunity to Mind Affecting
-Immune to Paralysis, Poison, Polymorph, Sleep effects, and Stunning
-No need to sleep
-Small size
-Speed of 20'
-Stat bonuses and maluses of -4 Strength, +2 Constitution, +2 Intelligence, -2 Wisdom
-Common and Sylvan as base languages
-Speak With Plants at-will

All for 9 RP.

Note: For the game I will be playing one of these in, the DM has allowed me to increase Strength to -2.



The Agave are a small race of plant-folk. Created where the blood of an empowered mortal spilled on a verdant field, they found themselves awakening months later, after the blood had soaked into the ground and been absorbed. They were, in a way, like children at first, not knowing what to do. Luckily, they were found by a kindly old druid, who took them in and treated them as family.

The druid, an ancient elvish man, taught them how to live and be in peace with nature. But many of the Agave wanted to see what society was like. While the old druid warned them that society was no place for them, he eventually relented and told them of a city they could visit. It was not the nearest, but it was the friendliest.

Many of the Agave left, and when they arrived, they were treated as a curiosity. They weren't exactly welcomed with open arms, but no one formed a torches and pitchfork mob either. Most of them found jobs as gardeners or scribes, using their natural abilities to the best of their ability.

That was several centuries ago. The druid, unfortunately, passed in that time, but the Agave still maintain his work. Outside of the grove, though, the Agave have spread. While not numerous by any stretch of the imagination, one can find them in many cities or villages if you know where to look.

The Agave are, as a people, a friendly and virtuous lot. Born from the blood of a hero, raised by a peaceful druid, they're usually instilled with a strong sense of right and wrong early in their lives and stand by it for the rest of their life.

Just for complete info, what's their lifespan and age statistics as you see it?

Probably not as long as you'd expect.

I'd lean towards maybe half again a human lifespan-but, with one caveat. An Agave doesn't so much die as they lose their animate spark, becoming steadily less active as their end draws near. When they "die" of old age, they take root and become a plant.

However, if spoken to via Speak With Plants or similar, they'd be much more intelligent and knowledgeable than an ordinary fern. And, if Awakened (such as via the spell of the same name) it'd be more akin to resurrection than a new being.
