Hey guys is there a feat or class feature in 3.x that allows you to burn spells of a higher level to cast a lower level spell?

Hey guys is there a feat or class feature in 3.x that allows you to burn spells of a higher level to cast a lower level spell?

You already can (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview/arcaneSpells.htm#preparingWizardSpells):

A spellcaster always has the option to fill a higher-level spell slot with a lower-level spell.

Unless you're looking for a way to do it spontaneously, like burning a prepared higher level spell to spontaneously cast any lower level spell you know? If that's what you meant, I don't know of any.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but there is the Arcane Manipulation feat in Lost Empires of Faerun. It allows you to break down a spell slot into a combination of smaller spell slots that total the original. So for instance you can break a 6th level spell slot into a 3, 2, and 1 spell slot. It gives you the actual spell slot, which I always thought was interesting, especially for a PrC that has missing lower level spells. It requires wizard level 1 to take.

A pet project:

Bard 1/ Cleric 1/ Wizard 1/ Human Paragon 2/Eldritch master 1/ Dweomerkeeper 1/ Eldritch Master 3/Sublime Chord 1/ Dweomerkeeper 9

Sublime Chord entry is met by:

Human paragon and Dweomerkeeper advance wizard casting to level 3 for 2nd level spells.
Eldritch Master (EM) grants a spell slot one level higher than you can currently cast in one class, granting a 3rd level wizard spell.
The remaining dweomerkeeper levels advance sublime chord.

With Arcane Manipluation and Arcane Preparation, you can break down a 6th level spell slot from sublime chord for a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd spell slots. This grants you the actual slot and thus bonus spells from high ability scores. Next EM grants bonus spells known to classes that learn spells like bard and sorcerer from levels 1-4. The build only has level 0 bard spells, so those bonus spells known can be applied to the sublime chord. Finally EM also grants an additional spell list you can learn spells from of your choice.

Your casting from Sublime Chord ends up with access too the Bard, Sorcerer, and one other list of choice (I choose cleric) with spell slots form 1 to 9.

Throw in alternative sourced spell feat, and you can prepare you arcane spells as divine for divine metamagic. The character would have quite a few options with a rune staff.

Signature Spell (Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, p.37) allows you to convert any prepared spell into one that you have previously selected with Spell Mastery, as long as the original slot is of equal or higher level than the intended spell.

Also, Rary's Arcane Conversion (Wiz 6), which lets you do exactly what you want, albeit at the cost of an additional spell slot.

Arcane Fusion/Greater Arcane Fusion in Complete Mage. I think its a Sorcerer only spell, however.

Apprentice Spellcaster lets you pick a favored spell, spontaneously drop any prepared spell of equal or higher level to cast your favored one.

Semi-related to this if you're using lower level spells in higher slots, there's a feat in Lost Empires of Faerun, Arcane Manipulation, that lets you break down 3 spellslots into its composite value of lower level slots. Basically it's there to prevent a player 'wasting' slots, and instead lets them have more firepower when they're using higher level slots.

So say if you were a character who knew a lot of lower level spells but didn't know that many higher level spells, but had the slots for it anyway (i.e. a low spellcasting stat character), you could break down, say, a 6th level slot to get 6 1st level spell slots or 12 cantrip slots. Lose one spell slot for the day, get a higher number of weaker slots!

A pet project:A 20th level wizard / incantatrix with a minor schema of consumptive field and echoing spell can cast an echoing mage's lucubration using a 6th level slot to gain five addition uses of a 5th level spell he has cast. Then since those spells are prepared as normal you can change them with Rary's arcane conversion. There seems to be no real limit on this either.

This combination wasn't explicitly mentioned but was already included in one of those famous shadowcraft mage builds that has more spells per day than a sorcerer.
