View Full Version : Order of the Statue

It is a beautiful day. Fluffy clouds lightly spot the blue spring sky and a light breeze gently flutters your new banner.

Brother Jean-Erik hums a hymn as he guides the oxen pulling the rear wagon, and Squire Orphan munches on an golden apple while driving the draft horses pulling the front wagon. The range-lands you are passing though are open, only lightly dotted with crops of trees, so the rest of the company rides upon various mounts to either side of the wagons. Your escort of a dozen Red Cloaks, patrol riders for the Crown, trail a few yards behind. Once they see you over the border they will turn Northwest to begin their patrol. In the distance you see herds and flocks lazily grazing.

You come to a creek around mid morning and water the horses one last time.

A couple hours later you approach the border. The woods look shadowy from a distance, and gloomy up close. The noon sun seems to draw a line on the border, across which the scene looks grey and brown in stark contrast to the bright green grass of the Kingdoms. There is no doubt that this is where the Dominion of the Crown, the Protection of the Wizards, and the Blessings of the Gods end. There is even a smell of mud and rot.

"The maps, such as they are, indicate about 10 days ride to Melford, where we are to meet the Septa to whom we are to deliver the idol. We shouldn't linger." advises Brother Jean-Erik.

With a final good by to your escort, you push across the border. The animals are nervous. You feel a chill as you cross. the road immediately deteriorates into muddy ruts. As soon as you are all a few yards over, the red-cloaks gallop away. As soon as you are around the first bend, out of sight of the Kingdoms, the wagons bog to a stop.

The first wagon carries gear and is pulled by 4 draft horses. The second carries the stature and is pulled by 4 oxen.

Your first challenge, it seems, is to get them unstuck from the mud. Of course it begins to rain.

The Idol of Demeter, covered by a tarp, weighs 1200 lbs, with an additional 300 for the base. It is "in-volatile" due to protection spells and blessings, and cannot be teleported or changed in any way. Thus, it must be transported by wagon. The statue can be broken, but doing so would require expensive reconsecration rituals.

http://www.greyhawkgrognard.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/priest.jpg
Brother Jean-Erik is a cleric of the Seven and a member of the Wondering Order. He has been assigned as Secretary for your party.
He never prepares fancy or combative spells and drives the wagon with the statue.

Squire Orphan might be 13 or 14, but is listed as 15 on your charter. He, as his name suggests, came from the Queen Margery Memorial Orphanage and Vocational Training Center. He happened to be standing close to your party when the charter was granted, and was so assigned. His default action is to defend the horses. He drives the wagon with the equipment (currently un-inventoried) granted you by the Queen's quartermasters.

The woods you are in are thick mixed deciduous, mostly oak. (we aren't using a grid or map for this 'encounter'. Semi sunken road surrounded by thick woods.)

Roll spot checks while examining the wagon.

Laerwen knows perhaps more power or better footing is needed, and that the road might be this bad for some time. The rain doesn't seem be be getting any worse though.

Pepper thinks maybe application of grease...somewhere...might help? And that there may be better roads that aren't on your map. Maybe scouting a head a bit might find one? The rain doesn't look like it will get worse and might be ok to fly in for a few minutes.

The southern bend where the wagons are stuck straightens back to the west after 20 yards. Pepper and her pet head West down the road. (I'm assuming she is flying at about 5 ft. ).

The road isn't very straight, wavering in it's generally westward path (I may need to back track on direction s when I get home, on a motorcycle taxi atm). Pepper can see 50 ft down the road and it looks deserted.

Pepper doesn't what kind of tree it is, but the circumstances seem familiar. This looks like what wizards and chronicles call a "landfall", when part of another world merges with this one. Sometimes they produce odd mixtures of forests. This looks like a small one.

She starts back to report to her companions, but only gets a few yards before she spots Off to the side of the road, 20 ft., a ...white and brown striped horse? Browsing in a clump of bushes. It notices Pepper and her pet and perks its ears. Knowledge nature check.

The rather flamboyantly dressed halfling just shrugged as he pondered how to get the cart unstuck. "Don't look at me, I don't have the brawn to lift that outta there. Maybe we can find a wedge or something?"

Vermillion

"I'm not one for manual labor either," the wizard said absently as she consulted her spellbook beneath the cover of the wagon. "Ah, let's try this."

Vermillion spends an Arcane Reservoir point, consults her spellbook as a Full Round Action, and switches out a prepared spell for Floating Disk. If we're not in combat rounds, she'll cast it once and use it to lift one of the wagons. It can only float up to three feet above the ground so someone might have to put a box or something between it and the bottom of the wagon. If that works to get the first cart unstuck, she'll move it to the second one and repeat. If both require a constant effect to avoid getting stuck again, she'll cast it a second time. Floating Disk lasts 6 hours at her level.

(some gm handwaving) the Floating disk can't lift the first wagon, but supports enough of the weight that the horses can pull it free.

The second wagon is too heavy and the disk can't help to budge it.

The third wagon (hereto unmentioned as it is PC gear) is stuck behind the second and therefore cannot be moved forwards.

Laerwen & pepper will escourt the first wagon far enough up the road that it looks like it might not get stuck again and far enough that the other two wagons can come up behind once unstuck. then go back to the second, Knowing the weight of the second wagon is such. Galen thinks that the hand sized white egg with green spots is.... well, an egg. Doesn't know of what. Is he going to pick it up?
Is any else looking at the White egg with green spots? Same knowledge checks if they do.

Vermillion thinks the pink egg is ... Easter egg. It looks like a dyed chicken egg. There isn't a nest. It is 'hidden' at child's eye level. It is mid spring... It has to do with a fertility ritual that some druid sects, the Seltic and Keltics, both of which say they pronounce Celtic correctly, the Catholics, and some Cults of the Maiden Mother practice, but has been adopted as a children's and post-planting holiday by many.

Does Vermillion touch or take the pink egg?

Elwin smiles as he fiddles with a bauble hanging from his bow, "Now now cubby, let the poor child alone, it is a tradition. I am sure it is a chicken egg, maybe a duck. Some common bird at any rate." The elf shrugs.

The Halfling's face reddens. Under his breath he scolds Elwin, "I told you not to call me that anymore."

Elwin places his finger on the Halfling's shoulder and in mock seriousness, "You must learn to embrace your inner cub little one." and he dances lightly out of range of the "Cub's" kukri, laughing.

He approaches the satchel, "Let's have a look at that shall we?" with a quick gesture he produces a Mage Hand and gently moves the object out of the way, setting it carefully on the ground, then using the spell turns the satchel to face him and opens up the flap as he looks inside.

Brother Gene has an uncomfortable expression at this, but hides it from the boy. Brother Gene, when he can get a word in, explains that the holiday is practiced at different times of spring by various sects and some treat is as a lunar holiday. The earliest is early late March and the latest is early May. (It is mid April in game time). Basically, Easter could have been anytime between now and the last 30 days. Everybody else is just west of the wagons, one move action will put them on the east side. By the start of combat you may be behind the wagons, on the wagon, or in front of the wagons, if you aren't already 60 ft east holding an owlbear/Easter Rabbit egg.

We'll just say the other wagon(s) are parked down the road aways and only deal with one for now.

That wagon is at i10, takes 2 squares, and is facing south. The team pulling it takes up the 20 ft in front of it.

Yellow jacket is off the map aways at z10. Spindal is below her at z11. They have broken vision through the trees ahead of them, but the rest of the party can't see past z.

While the other's resort to flashier magics and effort with the Wagon's, only to be waylaid by the eggs, the third Wagon, pulled by a single large horse that looks far finer than most that aren't under a knight, pulls at ropes double thick with the strength of a small team, while a lithe but plate clad elf alternates between shifting mud and pulling on the wagon with far more force than it seems his body would provide. All the while both receive encouragement from the third driver, a almost scantily clad halfing wrapped in silks which seem to shimmer as if from a internal fire light. Somehow, they don't hear the commotion until the last minute, where upon the elf, who had previously introduced himself as Mashra'na Selhiem, quickly walks towards the front of the wagons, whistling for his horse, mounting it quickly.

The halfling meanwhile grumbles as she leaves her wagon, he silks fluttering as Esmerelda approaches the front wagon, looking around from behind it towards the screech, as if annoyed at yet another delay, with her horse Huldra having been let out the ropes further back.

Mash'ra will position himself in front of the Wagon on one of his horses.
Esmerelda will start behind the wagon on the map, looking around one of the edges.

Vermillion thinks that the sound is an owlbear.
Yellow jacket suspects the purple egg has a slight aura because it is of a magical creature.

Strindler is holding a big brown egg.

Since my map is of an north/south road, we'll just use those directions.

Strindler and Yj are 60 ft east of the road. In difficult terrain with 50% cover due to trees and underbrush.

Does Yellow jacket land to stand next to Strindler, or hover next to him? How high?

Everybody else is just west of the wagons, one move action will put them on the east side. By the start of combat you may be behind the wagons, on the wagon, or in front of the wagons, if you aren't already 60 ft east holding an owlbear/Easter Rabbit egg.

Flyers have more position choice, within reason.

The Brother and the Squire will be busy controlling the oxen and horses.

Yellowjacket

Yellowjacket hovers above Stindler, 10ft (higher to clear the canopy) to get a better view of what is approaching.

Don't worry, Stindler, I will protect your from the Rabbit.

(10 ft...higher to clear the canopy???

A. do you mean underbrush instead of canopy?
B. Did you mean 10 meters?
C. While more overgrown than the typical presentation of a 'Robin Hood' style fantasy woodland, which is tended hunting land with much of the undergrowth removed, this is representing a English oak forest with a typical mature height range of 60 to 120 ft.
D. Getting above the canopy reduces your ability to see what is going on under the trees, any time but winter when the leaves have dropped.

For visual reference, think about half as bad as the Mirkwood in the Hobbit movie.) I'll edit in a pic in a minute.http:// https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-common-oak-pedunculate-oak-english-oak-quercus-robur-oak-forest-in-58203014.html (getting image URLs is a pain on android)

He will then attempt to hide if possible. He will then ready an attack action if anything moves to attack.

From her vantage above, Yellowjacket sees a black arrow shaft jutting from between the owlbear's shoulder blades. Layers of puss and congelled blood run down is back from the infected wound.

The owlbear crashes through the trees as if it can no longer care about its injuries, to the edge of the road.

Laerwen's arrow bounces off it's shoulder, and the deranged creature who issues a terrible shriek!

CUT SCENE

Fort save dc is [roll0] or be stunned until end of next round.

Before anyone can take a second breath after the owlbear falls, a purple flash bursts from it.

It gasps, and convulses, spasm-ing rapidly, rising....

Black bloody ichor sprays from every pore. It sprays or rains on everybody. Fort saves dc [roll1] for half of [roll2] acid damage.

Now back on its feet, the owlbear now has glowing purple eyes and ichor drips from beak and talons.

and it isn't alone. The hobgoblin and the driver also rise with purple eyes drawing short swords.

The incinerated thieves' skeletons stand, still burning. Their eyes are aflame. They lurch forward 10 ft.

A dead-a-roo stands and starts bounding towards Stindler.

As you wonder about all this, a mummified mouse, remaining eye purple, springs out of the wagon in a flying leap straight at Pepper! charge [roll3]

From the wagon there is a knocking as two of the barrels rock back and forth.

Any wonder as to what is in those barrels is both suspended and answered as a tree branch crunches into the wagon! The branch swings back into the air, attached to the tree that was killed by the crossbow bolt. That tree now bears a Jack-o-latern grin and purple knot hole glow eyes. The undead tree towers above, and readies to strike again against the living.

The wagons now has a crushed side, perhaps a broken axle, some petrified in fear horses, various splintered barrels, some harmlessly flopping undead pickled herring, and 10 undead pickled squirrels who drip vinegar as their purple eyes scan about and focus on targets.

Mouse (tiny/fine)goes on 9

Near the undead squirrels, a horse backs off slightly, while Mashra'na is stunned by the energy wave that animated the corpses.

Esmerelda meanwhile, holds no such compulsion, and charges into the battle uncaring of cause, but ready to fight with the dead in play. It seems she decided the most threatening of the targets remaining was the undead Kangeroo.

Mashra'Na:
Stunned like a limp biscuitt. The horse would probably be skittish around undead squirrels though, but I can't provide direct input.

Esmerelda:
Swift: Funhouse Waltz to get to 30ft move speed.
Move: 30ft to the Kangeroo.
Standard + Free: Draw Bladed Scarf and use Rippling Current. Kangeroo is automatically flat-footed, and having weak spots like joints, gets it's own sneak attack.

Hit: [roll0] vs Flat Footed AC
Damage: [roll1] base + [roll2] Rippling Current + [roll3] Sneak Attack
Edit: Esmerelda is at her full AC for moving and holding scarf for this turn, for 20 AC.

Larewen shoots the undead hobgoblin, catching it in the neck and knocking its head off. It seems to have needed that. It drops.

Pepper not appreciative of the fact that her wagon is now on fire moves out from under its cover and directly away from, then launches a full spread of magic missile darts at the fire skeleton, and bai-hu withdraws to be directly between the fire skeleton and pepper, staying in total defense, guarding pepper

repairing fire damage roll of Elwin: [roll0]

Killing the fireskeleton as she passes, Laerwen dance-spins into the undead owlbear. Her blades bite, and the beast drops.

Look down upon it, she sees the black arrow shaft between the shoulder blades.

Other issues...

The wagon will flame up soon.

The road is blocked by a burning tree.

Those eggs are still there.

The fire skeletons possessions burned, but their might be some scorched coin.

The other bodies are relatively intact.

Assuming you stop one from burning, you now have 2 wagons to inventory.

And that weird tree is still blocking the road further down.

At least the rain as stopped.

Laerwen with a gloved hand inspects the arrow, and the carefully collects it, and wrps it for further identification later on, as to the burning wagon, she will do what she can using what materials are available (dirt ect) to try to put out the wagon fire., and collect her bow.

Pepper will mount bai-hu and go ride closer to the burning tree and see if it still shows signs of life , and from a distance try to determine if it will burn up enough to move in sections with ease to clear the road

Pepper first. The burning tree looks to be just that. Hickory. A hard wood and magically dried when it was killed and then animated. It will burn for a long time. A few hours at least, and even then axes and a horse team will be needed to clear the smoldering remains. Might want to have lunch and dinner, maybe camp the night.

The Squire and the Brother start trying to put out the wagon...they would appreciate any assistance...

Laerwen examines the owlbear. Even with the body having been converted to undead, it looks like it was shot maybe weeks ago. Layers of puss, scab, and oozing infection around the shaft. It must have been a tough bear to have lived long enough for it to get that bad.

Carefully extracting the arrow, Laerwen holds it up to get better light for viewing. As the light catches it she sees that there are markings on the arrowhead. Runes...that start to glow sickly green

FLASH. A violet-black flash of of light burst from the arrowhead as it crumbles. Only a few fragments remain.

SHREEEEE!

Flesh and feathers slough off bone as the owlbear's skeleton tears loose.

Looks like it is back for round 3.

The formerly human, formerly ghoul, driver undergoes a similar transformation.

The hobgoblin...ends up with its skull inside its ribcage.

The burning tree, does not reanimate.

Attack of opportunity as the now skeletal owlbear tries to stand.

Each time a creature moves into an area covered by caltrops (or spends a round fighting while standing in such an area), it might step on one. The caltrops make an attack roll (base attack bonus +0) against the creature. For this attack, the creature’s shield, armor, and deflection bonuses do not count. If the creature is wearing shoes or other footwear, it gets a +2 armor bonus to AC. If the caltrops succeed on the attack, the creature has stepped on one. The caltrop deals 1 point of damage, and the creature’s speed is reduced by one-half because its foot is wounded. This movement penalty lasts for 24 hours, or until the creature is successfully treated with a DC 15 Heal check, or until it receives at least 1 point of magical curing. A charging or running creature must immediately stop if it steps on a caltrop.
