"Area: See Text
...
A caltrops spell covers one 5-foot-by-5-foot square with caltrops.
...
For every two caster levels beyond 1st, you can affect an additional 5-foot-by-5-foot square. Thus, you affect two squares at 3rd level (+1 melee), three at 5th level (+2 melee), four at 7th level (+3 melee), and a maximum of five at 9th level or higher (+4 melee maximum)." - Spell Compendium, page 42

So the area is up to five 5-foot squares.

If you combine this with the Sculpt Spell Metamagic Feat (Complete Arcane, page 83), does this allow you to change the shape (5-foot square) to one of the options allowed by the feat, allowing you to have up to five 40-foot cones/10-foot cylinders/20-foot radius balls/120-foot lines, or can you only have one area of the new shape?

Basically, because the spell affects multiple areas, can you change the shape of all 5 areas or is it all counted as 1?

The feat specifies its cube option as having multiple cubes, but other than that one, the others should have only a single area affected.

The spell's 'Area' entry says "see text", and the text says it affects one or more 5-foot squares. Sculpt Spell replaces the area of the spell, so I'd say no, you don't get five times the listed area of Sculpt Spell.
