View Full Version : Ultimate Division (Game 1 started; Game 2 recruiting)

Welcome to Ultimate Division. This is a new idea that I had for a structured game and I hope that it works well.

The rules:

0. This game was designed to be kind on my PM box so all player actions are taken in this thread. I also don't have much time for running games so the pace will be slower than most games. The complex interactions required each round should make up for that.

1. The goal of the game is to be the first to get 100 points. If multiple people reach 100 points at the same time, then the player with the higher score is the winner. (In the unlikely event of a tie, then the player who scored the most in the last round is the winner.) Each player starts off with 10 points.

2. The game is played in rounds. At the start of each round I will post a 10x10 grid filled with ten each of ten different smilies. During the round all players will discuss and vote on how to divide this grid and who gets each piece. The round will end after a week has passed or once a proposed division and split has been agreed to by a majority (>= 51%) of the players, whichever happens first.

3. At the end of the round each player will receive points for each smiley in his/her piece of the grid. The proposed division with the most votes (minimum 2) at the end of the round will be the division that I use. (In case of a tie, whichever reached that number of votes first will win.)

4. During the round to vote for someone's proposed please use green text. (SeaGreen is very kind on the eyes.) Ex. I support HyramGraff's proposal. You may only vote for one proposed division and there is no need to vote against someone else's proposal.

5. Points can be transfered at any time. To do so please post in blue text. Ex. I give 3 points to HyramGraff.

6. Here's the catch: during each round, each smiley is worth a different amount of points to each player. At the start of each round I will send a PM to each player saying how much each smiley is worth to them for this round. Possible point values are +4, +3, +2, +1, 0, -1, -2, -3, and -4.

7. Any player whose point total goes below zero has lost and will be removed from the game. (If the game ends up with only two players remaining then the player with the most points automatically wins.)

8. (Autolynch rule) Since each round lasts a week, I expect every player to make at least one post a round. If you do not show up during a round with out prior warning then the next round I will inform everyone which smiley will give you -1 points. This rule will not apply if a round ends early.

Nitty gritty rules about dividing the grid:

9. The grid must be divided into exactly N pieces where N is the number of players left in the game.

10. All pieces must be contiguous. Squares connect horizontally and vertically, not diagonally. You can't make a piece out of two different sections of the grid.

11. The pieces do not need to be of equal size. In fact, creating N equal sized pieces may prove to be impossible as the game progresses.

Interested Players:
Game One:

1. Ezlo
2. Korias
3. pingcode20
4. Crystall_Myr
5. Raiser_B1ade
6. Stu42
7. Castaras
8. banjo1985

10. Zar Peter

Game Two:
1. detrevnisisiht
2. Freshmeat_
3. Alarra
4. Fleeing Coward
5. DarkLightDragon
6.

Since I'm expecting the dividing to be a fairly complicated process, I'm limiting the number of players in a game to ten. However, I am willing to start two games at once if there is sufficient interest.

So, is anyone interested? Is there anything about the rules that needs clarified or tweaked?

Castaras, once a week is the minimum. I would expect that if you want to win you'll need to post more often.

I'm pleasntly supprised that I've gotten so many sign ups already as I haven't even advertized this yet.

Welcome to the first round of Ultimate Division. The ten smilies for this round are:

:roy: :elan: :durkon: :belkar: :roach: :xykon: :thog: :mitd: :miko: :redcloak:

And now your first board to divide.

The Rest you may divide amongst yourselves.

I would want the 3 by 2 rectangle from h3 to i5 please. I'll be happy with that although it isn't the best combination. If you wanted to be really nice I'll just take the whole last column.

Now Changed.

I would take I5, J5 - J7, A7 to A9 and D9 to F9

I'd like A1-A5 and A3-E3 for a total of 9 squares.

Actually, scratch my original choice. I want the rectangle F5 to I6, along with I4 and J4.

Well it looks like I'm too late to take any of the good spots, so I propose I have the Blue-lined bit here:

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z175/banjo_the_clown/untitled.jpg

I know that's quite a few squares, but that strip has that many different faces that I doubt anyone will want it! It's not too great for me but it's not going to kill me off, all I ask for is that Redcloak square, purely because I'm suspicious of anyone going for that many of them!

Are diagonal conections like that allowed?

If they are, I'll take C4 since ZP doesn't want it and nobody else can have it now.

Also, do all the squares have to be used?

No, diagonal connections are not allowed. I'll update the rules to make this clear.

Yes all of the squares have to be used. The grid has to be divided into exactly ten different portions. If some of the squares aren't used, then there would be more than ten portions.

banjo1985
2007-10-04, 10:45 AM
Thanks Hyram, that clarifies the only thing I was unsure about too (the diagonals).

I can see this getting very very interesting towards the end of the week where a few spaces are left over that no-one wants!

Here's the first official plan, ready for voting. Any square that has been filled in was chosen by that person. Dotted squares were assigned by me, based on what people had already chosen and can be changed if necessary

G1-G3 were shared between Zar Peter and Ezlo. I gave Ezlo G3 because he already had Durkon squares so I assumed they were positive for him. ZP recieved the Belkar at G1 for the same reason. G2 was given to ZP because he had fewer squares.

H9 and I9 were given to Pingcode because he selected them originally and has the least number of squares.

I gave all the other squares to Castaras.

I vote for this plan

pingcode20

Looks pretty fine by me. To be honest I'm blocked off by Ezlo and Xykon squares (you can imagine that I don't want these), so I'm happy with the mediocre selection I have, and I think you've made a good attempt at dividing up what remains.

pingcode20
2007-10-05, 03:53 AM
Actually, come to think of it, Raiser: Do you actually gain anything from Thog squares? If not, would you consider relinquishing the Thog square, and foist the lot of the unclaimed squares on Castaras, who has yet to show up?

Raiser Blade
2007-10-05, 10:13 AM

Thog is my +3.

banjo1985
2007-10-05, 10:17 AM
Sorry but out of my 10 squares only 5 of them give me a bonus, and Thogs one of them....I'm going to hold onto him for all I'm worth!

However, if Ezlo would give up one of his Redcloaks to me, then I would be willing to let go of my Thog to Raiser, thus opening the rest of the squares into a single area.

With overwhelming support, this plan is officially approved and round one ends early. Unfortunately, I don't have time to post the results now and I may not have a chance to until early Monday.

However, I can say that Ezlo probably won't like finding out that Korias has all of his (+3) Durkon squares and the rest of you probably won't like finding out that Durkon is actually worth +4 points for Korias.

Everyone's point values will be changing for the next round so feel free to divulge what they were and gloat over how many points you now have.

pingcode20
2007-10-05, 07:15 PM
Huh. Interesting.

Looks like we'll just have to shut out Korias next round to make up the difference.

I would have liked Korias' initial setup though - Belkar was +4 and Elan was +2. Durkon was +1, but Miko was -4.

Yup. But heres my tally sheet for today. Also, I would like to mention that bluffing is a legitimate strategy in this game.

For the first round your point values are:

:durkon: +4
:belkar: +3
:roy: +2
:elan: +1
:roach: 0
:xykon: 0
:thog: -1
:redcloak: -2
:miko: -3
:mitd: -4

If my calculations are correct, then I should be recieving a +35 boost to my score.

pingcode20
2007-10-05, 08:52 PM
Yeah, you pretty much set yourself well on the way to victory because Stu prioritised your change.

This coupled with the fact that the rest of us got what we wanted and we were nicely short sighted.

Korias
2007-10-05, 08:56 PM
And I thank you for that, but its also worth mentioning that You guys supported the plan before Ezlo could say No. Now, I just have to get the rest of my points just like this round.

Crystall_Myr
2007-10-06, 01:57 AM
:roach: +4
:xykon: +3
:durkon: +2
:belkar: +1
:thog: 0

:redcloak: -4

That brings me up to 20 points. Nothing special, but not too bad either.

Here are my points

:thog:+4
:mitd:+3
:roach:+2
:xykon:+1
:roy:-1

6x:thog: +24
1x:mitd: +3
1x:roach: +2
1x:xykon: +1
1x :roy: -1
1x :miko: 0

Leaving me with 29 points.

banjo1985
2007-10-06, 09:32 AM
Well :redcloak: is my +3 which helped, apart from that I have a smattering of bonuses and penalties, I believe it leaves me on about 15 points, as I was too late to get a good section!

Zar Peter
2007-10-06, 05:01 PM
I think I have 19 points:

:roy: +4
:elan: +3
:miko: +2
:redcloak: +1
:durkon: 0
:belkar: 0
:roach: -1
:mitd: -2
:thog: -3
:xykon: -4

Castaras
2007-10-07, 02:36 AM
:mitd: +4
:miko: +3
:xykon: +2
:thog: +1
:redcloak: 0
:roy: 0
:elan: -1
:roach: -2
:belkar: -3
:durkon: -4

0-2-2+3-4+4+4+3-1+3+1-4+3-0-0-0-1-4=3

I got +3. *shrugs* At least I'm still in the game. Was nervous that I'd get -something. Still have a chance of winning.

Alright, I'll just take a few squares off your hands, Korias, so you can take your squares.

I want C4, C5, D5, C6, B6, B7, C7, D8, D9, E8, and E9.

This leaves you nicely open to grab the other squares, and the gaps are filled.

((Come on people, let's stomp Korias' choices into the ground!))

EDIT: Actually, since there's another square neither Castaras nor Korias want, I'll take B10-E10 too.

The squares must be linked horizontally or vertically- not diagonally.

If you take C8, then it could work

Not any more, I don't. And I don't mind you having that extra MitD - it's only part of my nefarious plan to throttle Korias this round.

After all - we're not risking anybody else suddenly winning if they pull off a coup, are we?

Korias
2007-10-08, 08:53 PM
No! I want my squares back!

Crystal Myr can have E10, But Pingcode cant have my squares. He blatantly decided "Hey, Lets bash Korias!" Because of my immediate gain in points. I refuse to support the plan as is untill I receive C10, D10, D9, and D8, as well as E8.

You're the one closest to victory - it's blatant, but justified.

Nothing personal - you are the only one even close to being able to leap close to 100 this round.

Besides, if at least 5 other people support the plan, your support is not necessary.

((And it's my turn to be a scumbag! :smallamused::smallbiggrin::smalltongue:))

((And it's my turn to be a scumbag! :smallamused::smallbiggrin::smalltongue:))

But you made it personal. You said "Cmon everybody, lets stomp Korias into the ground!" That alone is a very personal insult. While I dont mind that your playing the game, its the fact that you decide to say it in such a way that it dictates as if your trying to slam me into the floor and laugh at me. I was content with my 8 squares last round, it wasnt untill much later on that I realized I could claim more. My claim this round was a smattering of +1s and +2s, along with 0s, because I couldnt find a good concetration of Roy, Miko, and MITD that didnt have Belkars, Thog, or Elans connecting them. (Which are my -2,-3,and -4 respectivley.) Thus, when you take away 3 of my +2s (My MITDs) and three of my +1s (Xykons), I'm bound to be angry. And then you come in, state your claim and suddenly bam, its changed. While this did happen to me last round, it was to late for any protest to be made from Ezlo, and I'm sorry. But the fact is, I have time to protest this. Tell me: Pingcode, as written, could have a possible score of 60 if his Xykons, Thogs, and MITDs are worth +4/+3/+2 at the end of this round. If I had what I wanted, You would have a score of 57 on my side, AT THE GREATEST. Which is a lesser evil: My 57, or Pingcodes 60? You be the judge.

pingcode20
2007-10-09, 12:06 AM
Apologies for that then. I had not meant it to be offensive or personal in any way beyond the context of playing the game.

If you've taken offense, then I am sorry and I apologise.

Very well, I relinquish D9 and F9 to you on the condition that Crystall picks up B10, C10 and D10. Fair enough for you?

Well, it looks like I'm out don't it  I don't post on the evenings, so by the time I logged on this morning all the spaces have gone!

As it is I see the Salmon and Pincode as having a lot of spaces, but Pingcode has nothing I want, which is a drag, because I think he'll be sitting on about 70 points at the end of this round as it is.

To be honest there's nothing left that will do me any good, so I'm at a loss as to where to go, however, if people are willing to go with this, Id like E7,F7-F9, G7, H7 & H8. It's a small section and it encroaches Crystal and Raisers areas, but to be honest I want more than 4 spaces

I'm also willing to take the Thog space to sweeten the deal if nobody around it wants it. It's +0 for me, so I don't mind either way.

For this plan to work, I have to take all those squares or the grid areas won't be linked.

It wasn't really a serious plan anyway- you and raiser sharing the squares is more practical.

Am I right in thinking that once these top three squares are sorted out that's the whole grid done? If so then I'd say there are 6-8 of us that are happy with the division, so we could technically push it through even if Raiser didn't want the squares.

Sorry Raiser, but if it sorts things out then....

As I said a few posts ago, I'll take it if it pushes the plan through. It's -1 for me, so it's not going to send me flying into a vat of ill tempered mutated sea bass. (end of bizzare movie reference)

Salmon said that if pushed he would take Belkar as well as Thog, leaving you with just a Redcloak to deal with. If you've got enough points elsewheer it shouldn't do you too much damage. What do you say?

EDIT Essentially it would look like this:

Image deleted - see Stu42's representation below.

That's all the squares filled, just maybe not in a way everyone is happy with. But I do think it works better than Stu's two alternative plans. (Sorry Rasiers colour doesn't match, I couldn't find it on the palette!)

I'm not really the deceptive type. I dunno i guess it's cuz i don't like being lied to so i don't lie.

I don't really have a chance of winning as I'm that far behind, so part of the reason I've taken so many squares is to prevent the more likely winners from taking them. I definitely want to keep the stuff from A4 downwards, but if anyone wanted the ones above I would be happy to discuss it.

Here's an update of the grid. I've taken A9 because it's a 0 for me and ZP doesn't want it.

As a reminder, a valid plan needs to have at least two votes for it by late Monday.

With only 3 days left, here's my plan. Each person who hasn't posted yet has been given one of the unwanted sections of the board.

I vote for this plan or any derivative of it where my section remins unchanged.

I actually did post.

I said I wanted the thogs and Mikos.

But eh. I don't have enough time really. I agree with this plan.

This plan has won. I'll see if I can update standings sometime in the next few hours.
