Unbodied (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/monsters/unbodied.htm) have a power called "Assume Likeness."

An unbodied can assume the likeness of any Small, Medium, or Large creature as a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. Its abilities do not change, but it appears to be that creature, relying on its Bluff and Disguise skills to deflect suspicion.

Mimics (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/mimic.htm) are Large creatures, so an Unbodied can Assume their Likeness. Mimics' likenesses are essentially determined by "Mimic Shape:"

A mimic can assume the general shape of any object that fills roughly 150 cubic feet (5 feet by 5 feet by 6 feet), such as a massive chest, a stout bed, or a wide door frame. The creature cannot substantially alter its size, though. A mimic’s body is hard and has a rough texture, no matter what appearance it might present. Anyone who examines the mimic can detect the ruse with a successful Spot check opposed by the mimic’s Disguise check. Of course, by this time it is generally far too late.

This means that Unbodied can assume the likeness of Mimics, and then use that to look like any object that fills roughly 150 cubic feet. Unlike a mimic, they're incorporeal, so they're even easier to detect if somebody pokes at them, but this vastly increases the utility of their Assume Likeness ability, enabling them to hide as all sorts of things.

Incidentally, Psion Uncarnates (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/prestigeClasses/psionUncarnate.htm) also get Assume Likeness, if you want to try something on a PC.

Just thought I'd share this realization, as it amused me.

Try combining Assume Likeness with Metamorphic Transfer and (Improved) Assume Supernatural Ability...

Might also do interesting things if you imbue yourself with the ghost touch property.

Was there anything ever stopping them from picking forms via Animated Objects?

Good point; that makes it even easier.
