Chains of Carceri is a warlock invocation (level 15 prerequisite) which allows the warlock to cast hold monster without expending a slot, but only on Celestials, Fiends, and Elementals.

Warlocks also have an invocation that lets them conjure an elemental once a day (using a slot).

I assumed a warlock could use chains of carceri to hold an elemental that became hostile if concentration is broken, but now I see all of the "elementals" (fire, air, earth, water) are immune to the paralyzed condition.

Is Chains of Carceri, already limited to only 3 types of creatures, useless on the elementals you summon?

It seemed like such a natural synergy until I saw the immunities.

Yes, that is correct.

Don't forget, though, you can use Chains on demons you summon.

Indeed. It does makes Summon Greater Demon safer (as well as Infernal Calling).

There are a few more elementals other than the classic four (air, earth, fire, water). Maybe some of these are not immune to the paralyzed condition. Not very familiar with dnd beyond, but maybe a quick search there will produce a list of all the elementals in the books so it will be easy to check against how many of the elementals this invocation would work.

For earth at CR5 you can get a Xorn which can replace a earth elemental fine.

You can get a salamander to replace a fire elemental, unless the moving through small spaces was important for some reason.

For water you have to go down to CR3 for a water weird.

For air you have to go all the way down to some mephit (Dust CR 1/2; Smoke or Steam CR1/4).

Thats really about it, and warlocks can't summon a horde of the little ones like other casters can, we just get the one (no access to conjure minor elementals)

Minor summmons:
CR2 azer, gargoyle
CR1 fire snake
CR1/2 magmin, mephits (dust, ice magma)
CR1/4 mephits (mud, smoke, steam)
