Greetings, all!

I somehow recall an official ruling to swap proficiencies or add proficiencies to races if the item name relates to the race's name, like a dwarven axe becoming a martial weapon or free proficiency for all dwarves. Where is the rules citation for this? (It may be Complete Warrior and trading proficiencies may be involved.) What does it officially say?

The main question I want answered through this post is this: Does this mean that a Half-Minotaur treats a Minotaur Greathammer as a martial weapon?

Thankee!

The rules you're looking for are in Complete Warrior pages 154-155. Briefly: if a race has Weapon Familiarity, it can swap one 'racial' proficiency for another. Example: swap Dwarven Urgrosh for Dwarven Warpike.

Unfortunately, this does not help your half-Minotaur because that race doesn't have any weapon familiarity to start with. There is a feat in the same book that gives you blanket proficiency with all 'racial' weapons, but for a Minotaur this is functionally equivalent to just taking EWP.

Also in Complete Warrior (and Races Of Stone) is a feat called Improved Weapon Familiarity. Has a prerequisite of +1 BAB, and allows you to treat all exotic weapons associated with your race as martial.

If you put Half-Minotaur on a base creature that gets a racial weapon familiarity, you should be able to trade one of your base race weapon for a template race weapon. Complete Warrior p154-155 only specifies race-specific exotic weapons, so as long as you have the same number of race-specific weapons for your weapon familiarity, and all of those weapons you select have one of your character's races in the name, you should be good. However, you'll still need to double check with your DM because this is subject to interpretation.

For example, if you make a Half-Minotaur Earth Dwarf (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/elementalRacialVariants.htm#racesOfEarth), you would see about trading one of your Dwarf weapons you're familiar with for a Greathorn Minotaur Greathammer familiarity.
