So, saw this in another thread:

How about the Kormus (https://web.archive.org/web/20060422005734/wizo.wizards.com/ka/archive/KnowledgeArcana05.pdf)? (3 HD, LA +2, Cha 23)

Now I'm trying to hunt down links to the other issues.

Also, was this considered official content? i.e. would it be legal in Iron Chef or similar?

Cheers - T

Change the issue number in the link. Worked for me when I tried it for issues 4 and 3 ;-)

There are 9 issues, and 11 other files.

2 for 9, 3 for 7, and 6 for 8.

ETA: As an online magazine, KA has supplementary files beyond the PDFs. I haven't found online versions of them, but here's a file listing:

Thank you all.

So what's our opinion of the status of the material? Is it 1st party? It was originally published on an official Wizards website...

Would it count for Iron Chef etc. the same way other online official material does?

I'm a little confused by this?

I'm a little confused by this?#6 is here (https://web.archive.org/web/20070729191916/http://wizo.wizards.com/ka/KnowledgeArcana06.pdf). But I can't find anything beyond #9, and where are the extra files thorr-kan is talking about?

Now this is a weird one. Based on issue 1, it is:

"The new community Newsletter for the Wizards Online Community. The goal of Knowledge Arcana is to support, inform, explore and entertain the Wizards Online Community. It is for the community, and by the community."

The list of publisher and editors is all screen names from the wizards boards. It has interviews with Skip Williams and his ilk, and was originally hosted on the wizards site, so it was obviously known to wotc. Question is if it was ever endorsed as official material...

Based on this, I’d say it’s definitely not official, since it’s not produced by Wizards per se. Sounds more like a fanzine to me.

Looking at issue 6, Penny Williams is listed as EIC, but in her bio on p. 16 she’s described as “Now a busy freelancer,” which tells me she’s not representing Wizards as an employee when she works on this publication. Thus no official input from Wizards, just something the online community put together.

I would treat this as one step lower than third-party, since it’s not published by any company per se, just the members of the WotC forums at the time. If ever there was cause to use the term “fourth-party,” this would be it.

Okay, so apparently Editor Bill W. Baldwin was published in dragon mag at some point and did other "freelance work" for wotc (some of the online matiera articles credit him). Would also go on to author of the 4th ed adventure module "Lost Temple of the Fey Gods". The listed publisher (and also layout person) was Rasmus Pechuel, is credited as a playtester for PgtF, Book of Challanges, MM2 and Serpent Kingdoms, much like many of the other names.

So the impression I am getting is that this magazine was a basically a project wherein several of the top players who had frequent contact with the creators wanted to get more involved, so wotc okayed them to make their own little magazine and put it on the official website as a community newsletter that really turned into more of a dragon mag clone.

In terms of party-ness, I would place this at about the same level as the more obscure instances wotc web material that made it on the site despite not having any of the usual big names attached to it. Though I might be missing something.

To me the difference is that even obscure material on the Wizards website is technically published by WotC, using WotC artwork and going through a basic editorial process.

This fanzine isn’t published by Wizards in any form, and there evidently wasn’t any editorial input or oversight from Wizards employees. It looks like a couple freelancers took the lead and other forumites contributed their ideas.

This is not to diminish those ideas, but this is effectively a compilation of fan articles. I see that as a long step below the Wizards web material.

ka09_ChefWebExtra.pdfThe Wayback Machine actually has those. I saw 'em earlier. Let's see if I can find them again.

[edit] They're here (https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://wizo.wizards.com/ka/*).

Figured it would work for somebody.

I have a history of problems with the Wayback Machine. Stuff works for other people, but just doesn't work for me.
