View Full Version : What non-wizard spells would you want on your wizard?

To simplify the question, if you essentially had access to Bard's Magical Secrets as a Wizard (2 spells of 3rd level or lower, 2 of 5th or lower, and 2 of 7th or lower), which spells would you want?

Would you seek to grab handy rituals that you wouldn't need to prepare? Try to double down on your strengths? Or fill gaps (like healing)? Or something else entirely?

Call Lightning. It's the electric fireball.

Depends on the wizard in question. Cleric's divinations (Augury, Commune, Find the Path) on a diviner would be nice, druid's summoning (Conjure Animal and Conjure Woodland Being) would make conjurer better, as would Planar Ally for Planar Binding shennanigans (though they won't be allies after that). Healing is nice, but not really something a wizard would go for, but Find (Greater) Steed would be useful for anyone, as would Enhance Ability.

ARMOR OF AGATHYS

I mean, it works so well with the abjuration wizard... it's just awesome.

Other than that, spirit guardians, bless, and as someone mentioned above, find greater steed.

Paladin
Find Steed
Find Greater Steed
Holy Weapon
Crusader's Mantle (necromancers and the like)

Cleric
Guidance
Revivify
Spirit Guardians
Bless

Warlock
Hex (for certain combo opportunities that open up with it as a Wizard spell)
Armor of Agathys
Hellish Rebuke (Getting this as a Wizard spell on an Evoker means you can deal flat 65 damage reactions)

Druid
Shillelagh (INT SAD Booming Blade or Bladesingers)
Goodberry
Pass Without Trace
Healing Spirit

Bard
Dissonant Whispers

Special mention to goodberry, it works so well with a familiar. 10 action-free heals from a pair of first level spells that can be cast before a long rest.

Freedom of Movement. People miss the fact that it's no longer a wizard spell.

Cure Wounds. It makes an amazing Contingency.

Guidance is one spell I wish my Wizard had.

1 - Bless, HEX, Dissonant Whispers
2 - Enhance Ability
3 - CONJURE ANIMALS, Call Lightning
4 - Death Ward, Freedom of Movement
5 - Contagion, FIND GREATER STEED, Holy Weapon
6 - Conjure Fey
7 - Surprisingly, nothing. Wizards made out like gangbusters here.
8 - Holy Aura
9 - Mass Heal

As you might have guessed from my list, it's slanted towards defense.

Usually though when I play non-wizard casters, I end up wishing I had the wizard's list.

Had an idea to make a tribal/shaman type wizard focusing on Divination and support spells. But looking through the spell lists, i realized all the best, most thematic divination spells were pretty much exclusive to the Druid.

Chaos bolt. I "simulate" it with rolling a d6 for my Chromatic Orb damage. ;)
