I have a sorcerer in a upcoming game that chose the Runechild Sorcerous Origin.

This in and of itself is fine, but things get kinda janky when we start using the sorcery points instead of spell slots (optional rule from DMG).

The intent is that Runes charge whenever the sorcerer uses sorcery points (either to convert into spell slots or for metamagic). But since we are using the optional Sorcery Point rune that spells are cast with points instead of slots, this feature activates too frequently. Is there any clean solution to make sure the runes don't charge so frequently, and work instead as intended, with the sorcery points instead of spell slots optional rule. Ideally they would charge just as often as they would when using spell slots.

Would this rule account for a similar frequency of charged runes?

Whenever you cast a spell of 1st level or higher, you charge a number of runes equal to the level of the spell you cast.

I have no idea what runechild is, but if it's tied to sorcery point use, nothing changes. The DMG variant doesn't use sorcery points, it uses spell points, and there's no direct interaction between them by RAW.

The Spell Point variant system (DMG pg 288) is not the same as the Sorcery Point mechanic as JackPhoenix pointed out. While some table will houserule that the are interchangeable, in the case of the Runechild Sorcerous Origin (http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/sorcerer:runechild), it would be a substantial power boost. To keep it from being totally broken though, you only gain an additional rune when you level up in the class. So while having a pool of d6 damage reduction dice, or advantage on ability scores on tap are nice features, they are still limited by the consumption of Sorcery Points or by utilizing Metamagic. (And defeats the purpose of Subtle casting while it is at it.) We shall not discuss coffeelock gimmicks with this character.
