This came up in another thread and I was wondering what the playground's opinion was on this matter. We have some people saying when you use the rules that let you cast personal spells as touch spells on your familiar or psicrystal the restriction that they must remain within 5ft to continue receiving the effects of the spell don't carry over from the rules that let your spells affect both you and your familiar/psicrystal simultaneously.

That depends on the rule set you are using. Pathfinder's "share spells" says this:

The wizard may cast a spell with a target of “You” on his familiar (as a touch spell) instead of on himself. A wizard may cast spells on his familiar even if the spells do not normally affect creatures of the familiar’s type (magical beast).

No mention of the 5' thing in there, but also no mention of the fact that both the caster and the familiar can benefit from the spell. It's either the caster or the familiar that gets the effect, the other is left high and dry.

While 3.5 says this:

At the master’s option, he may have any spell (but not any spell-like ability) he casts on himself also affect his familiar. The familiar must be within 5 feet at the time of casting to receive the benefit.

If the spell or effect has a duration other than instantaneous, it stops affecting the familiar if it moves farther than 5 feet away and will not affect the familiar again even if it returns to the master before the duration expires. Additionally, the master may cast a spell with a target of "You" on his familiar (as a touch range spell) instead of on himself.

The key is the word "Additionally", which splits the "share spells" feature into two distinct abilities, one where both the caster and the familiar benefit from the spell, and one where only the familiar benefits from the spell.

The first one is the one that has the 5' restriction, which makes sense since the caster was the target of the spell ... the familiar was not the target of the spell, so has to stay within range for the effect to still apply.

In the second one, the familiar was the target of (and the caster gets no direct benefit from) the spell. Like any touch spell cast on a fellow party member, the party member can move away and the spell doesn't wink out.

Yeah this is the point of contention. Does "Additionally" make the touch range thing a completely separate use of share spells/powers, or does it mean "in addition to" which means you include everything mentioned above.

I think you're correct but still not sure.
