"Power always has its costs, and yet gold is worthless..."

The soulscorners are a small, but powerful, group involved in the dark arts and the concept of burning up one's lifeforce in order to attain true power; to them, sacrifice is only a step to the greatest treasures of all. Their abilities are outside the scope of negative energy, and often fend off the destructive capabilities of such energy. Both spellcasters and warriors try their hands and souls in this dangerous magic. While a typical soulscorner is evil, the nature of using one's of lifeforce rather than that of others seems to draw in neutral practitioners as well; though their pursuit into the art is bound to test their limits. Soulscorners often find common grounds with blood magi, as the basis of both their magics is related.

Class Features
Scorns: The soulscorner picks a new class ability from the list below every other level. These dark techniques are known as Scorns. Any fast healing or regeneration the soulscorner has does not heal damage dealt within a Scorn; temporary hitpoints cannot be expended to use Scorns.

Blooded Expertise: The soulscorner may take five damage as an immediate to receive a +2 bonus to his next skill check, as long as it is within this round. This may only be used once per round.

Paid in Full: A soulscorner may expend his own life force in substitution for material components. By reducing his current hitpoints by twice the cost of the material, to a maximum of 20 gp, he may negate the spell's material components as part of casting the spell. Any spell that benefits from this deals an extra 1 point of damage per spell level to the first creature it would damage; this may be activated by expending a single hitpoint.

Sorrow Beyond Doubt: By expending one of his hitpoints as part of an attack or spellcasting, the soulscorner's next attack or spell deals damage as if all the target's DR values were one lower. He may use this ability multiple times at once, but only to a maximum reduction equal to his class levels.

The Remorseful Blade: Whenever the soulscorner is struck by a type of damage, such as piercing, good, or fire, he gains resistance to damage of that type equal to half the damage dealt for one round. Only one type of damage resistance may be possessed at a time, automatically replacing the old type.

Mastery of the Essence: The soulscorner may redistribute his ability damage or drain as a full-round action; a -4 bonus to Dexterity may be converted into a -4 bonus to Charisma, for instance.

Dread Palm: For every 1d4 hitpoints the soulscorner chooses to expend, he deals 1d3 damage plus 1 point of unholy divine damage, which bypasses damage reduction, to a creature he strikes with a successful melee touch attack as a standard action. He receives a +1 profane bonus on the attack roll for every 1d4 hitpoints expended. (He may lose 6d4 hitpoints to deal 6d3 damage and 6 points of unholy divine damage.)

Dark Metamagic: For every two point of physical ability damage the soulscorner chooses to take, he may cast a spell with a metamagic of equal or lesser spell level modification. For example, he may take 3 points of Strength damage and 1 point of Dexterity damage to cast a Silence and Stilled spell. Dark Metamagic may only work for a total spell level adjustment of half his class levels; to receive a total reduction of -4 to the metamagics added, his class level must be eight or higher. He may not lower an ability score below 1 with this ability.

Lesser of Two Evils: By taking one point of ability drain to one ability score as an immediate action, the soulscorner receives a +2 bonus to any one saving throw from now until the end of his next turn. If failing the save would kill him as a death effect or from too much damage (roll any potential damage first), he receives a +4 bonus instead.

Bonus Feat: Choose one - Endurance, Diehard, Toughness, Improved Toughness, Great Fortitude, Lightning Reflexes, or Iron Will, as long as the soulscorner qualifies.

Void Heart: The soulscorner only loses class features, treated as one level lower, when he gains negative levels; he gains a +2 bonus on saves against gaining more negative levels with in this condition. At any one time, one of his ability scores may reach 0 without dying, but he becomes disabled and suffers the normal effects of having a 0 in that attribute; he gains a +2 bonus on saves against additional ability drain in this condition.

Recoil Curse: Once per week, the soulscorner may duplicate the effects of a spell or supernatural ability used successfully on him by an enemy; this effect targets the enemy, who must make the same saves, if any, as if it had targeted itself. This effect has a 50% chance to work if the soulscorner is actually slain in the attack before he could normally use this ability, as long as he was somewhat aware of the attack.

A Hand in Death: The soulscorner may use detect undead at will and death knell twice per day as spell-like abilities of a caster level equal to his class level.

Lifeforce Distruption: Any damage the soulscorner deals with a Scorn, except from Recoil Curse, cannot be healed by fast healing or regeneration. This damage is not subtracted from temporary hit points either.

Finality: At tenth level, a soulscorner becomes an outsider (native) and no longer eats, breaths, or sleeps. Enemies who move within five feet of him must succeed on a DC 20+Cha modifier Fortitude save or begin to die away in the presence of the soulscorner; they lose one hitpoint at the beginning of each of their rounds, which heals the soulscorner by an equal amount until they spend at least three rounds at a distance of ten feet or more away from him.

Just three things:1. Why do they get a high reflex save instead of fortitude? I'd imagine the latter would be higher, given all the pain they put themselves through.2. Can Finality be turned off? It might mess up rp heavy campaigns if you kill commoners that are passing by.3. Does cleric's spellcasting progress as well?

Does the "X" in the 10th level will save mean something?

Errors on my part in both cases; I thought Reflex saves came before Fortitude saves. Finality has been changed to affect enemies only.

And the class may be taken by wizards, clerics, fighters, etc. No class has really been barred from it. Though 4 ranks in Heal might determine who gets in first.

This may seem silly, but either axe void heart, or say that the amount of ability damage you take from dark metamagic can't take the ability score below 0. Why? Say, you take void heart (strength). Next, you use Dark Metamagic to take an infinite amount off strength, and use infinite metamagic. Yes, it's cheesy. No, you shouldn't have to mention it, but yes, munchkinds can and will jump on it.

I've altered Void Heart and Dark Metamagic for less cheese; as well as making it so that you can't fast heal or regenerate any hitpoints (or use temporary hp) expended to use a Scorn. Void Heart is actually intended to work for any attribute, but only one may be 0 at a time. I've rewritten it to clarify.

Cool idea, seems nicely balanced, I'm already using it.
