Is there a way of doing that? Trying to create something akin to the "Army of Mashines" trope one knows from Terminator, Horizon Zero Dawn, etc. =

Thanks for the input!

Easiest way for the self replicating part I can think of is via oozes who can split into two creatures of half HD. If we assume the grow until they reach a critical mass and then split then oozes spread more like bacteria.

The second thought I have is do trolls regenerate into one or two beings with severed limbs?

Maybe take something that self-replicates and make an effigy of it?

Possibilities for actual self-replicating machines:

The Clockwork Nirvana of Mechanus has machinery for building intelligent constructs, such as inevitables. Perhaps one of them malfunctions and starts creating more of itself, or someone learns their secrets and starts a chain reaction, or the ruler of Mechanus decides to bring perfect order to the material plane.

There's the Warforged from Eberron, they're sentient machines, if they got control of the Xen'Drik forges used to make them or learned how they work, presumably they could make more of themselves.

The epic spell Origin of Species could be used to create a living machine species.

Runic Guardian that has Simulacrum cast with a piece of a Stone Golem into it. 1/day It will create a simulacrum of a Stone Golem
Creating a 2nd Runic Guardian that has Simulacrum cast with a piece of the above Runic Guardian into it. This Runic Guardian can create a Runic Guardian that can create a Stone Golem 1/day.
Creating a 3rd Runic Guardian that has Simulacrum cast with a piece of the above Runic Guardian into it. This Runic Guardian can create a Runic Guardian that can create a Runic Guardian that can create a Stone Golem 1/day.

Not exactly self-replicating, but the Shardsoul Slayer empowers others of it's kind when it is destroyed.

Technically any non-unique intelligent construct with sufficient stats and leveling could learn to make more constructs like itself

A Warforged Dweomerkeeper using Uncanny Forethought to shorten casting time and Ice Assassin mostly works.

Clockwork Horrors do this already. Monster Manual 2- page 48.

Beat me to it it, but yes. What little lore can be found in MM2's entry about the Clockwork Horrors leads us to believe they will strip an entire world of its resources in order to exponentially grow in numbers and forms.

Not unlike the Faro Plague from Horizon Zero Dawn.
