View Full Version : The Shattered Gates of Slaughtergarde

Centuries ago, an army of angels and good folk defeated the forces of darkness and disorder, blowing apart their fortress-mountain of Slaughtergarde and casting it back into the Infinite Layers of the Abyss. Another demonic invasion of the world had been halted, another dam raised against the tide of evil. However much of the history of Slaughtergarde has been lost to time, it is now more myth or fable than history itself. Our heroes begin their unwitting journey to the valley of Obelisks.

- Each member of the party is somewhere out in about on a forest path trying to make their way to Sumberton, a small city in the valley that is an important trade center. Each believe they are going in the correct direction
-- However, The sky has been slowly darkening all day, and the smell of rain has been thick in the air. Now it has finally begun to fall, accompanied by loud peals of thunder that seem to roll across the landscape. The sun is hidden behind massive storm clouds, and a cold wind blows from the north. As bolts of lightning begin to slam from cloud to ground and pieces of hail begin to strike the earth, the need for shelter becomes obvious.

As you are caught in the storm itself (keep in mind, none of you are near each other yet.) Ahead in the distance, a Large tor rises from the ground, its form illuminated by the occasional lightning bolt. it seems rocky and solid..

Dagr staggers as the storm begins to pick up, clutching tightly at his polearm for support. Unable to read the map as he is, he's been wandering through these woods for the last several hours, blindly hoping to reencounter the path he left trying to find a short cut.

He pauses to shove wet hair out of in front of his eyes, staring up at the sky just as it's split by another bolt of lightning. The light is harsh even to his damaged eyes, but he is still able to see a large stone structure jutting out from the ground in the distance. "Stone, aye, but it's a tall wan." Dagr mutters to himself, tugging at a lock of hair. "But like as no it's yer last chance fer a place o haud less ye fancy gaun on tae Sumberton."

Dagr pauses a moment longer, just long enough for a crack of thunder to sound uncomfortably close, before he decides to head to the tor at a fast jog.

She was small for her age, standing just a few inches short of most dwarves. Lithe and somewhat lanky, she wore a green shirt, blue pants and a hooded red cloak which partially concealed a backpack. There was a dagger and a multipocketed pouch on her belt. One would think that this person was a halfling but she wore black boots and was not as stout and maybe a little too tall. Upon closer examination, especially looking within the hood and seeing the prepubescent face and wispy reddish brown hair one would realize that she was a human child. And she was travelling alone.

But while she was young, and she did seem a little bit lost, she gave the impression that her travelling alone by choice rather than being abandoned or lost track of by a parent or guardian. There was purpose, or at least a preparedness to the way she travelled, albeit she did not know precisely where she was going. Clearly she was not in her element but she seemed to be holding her own, or at least trying to anyway. She was now wet and somewhat frightened to death of her surroundings given the lightning and hailstorm.

Then she saw the Tor. Perhaps there was a cave nearby for her to take shelter? Pulling her cloak protectively closer to herself she headed towards it.

"Right, the map says after t' way." Cass says fumbling with his map while walking through the forest. He wears vest with quilted cloth beneath. As he walks his cape swishes behind him.

Cass wishes he had a hat right about now, the rain was getting him drenched. Since no one was around, he had his sleeves rolled up, his arms were wet. On them you can see clear bumps throughout them with thick white heads.

Cass thought to himself, Oi might neve' get to tow... but just then the lightning illuminates the Tor nearby. He decided he might as well go there for safety and better direction.

Wandering near where she thought the road might be. the approaching storm was one to not take lightly. Looking about for some form of shelter off in the distance noticing a tor outlined by the light flashes of each bolt as it stuck earth. Careful to avoid any really big trees for any she know could be the next target of a bolt of lightning from the sky. Making her way as fast as she could towards the tor.

As the heroes make their way onward in the storm, each one arriving at a different time (in respective post order.. i.e. Dagr makes it there first and so on.)
-The massive tor towers above the surrounding country. A few narrow ledges offer scant protection from the elements, but a closer inspection reveals a massive, arched entryway at least 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide, set into the side of the hill with a door in the middle. The ground just outside it slopes away from the doorway, directing the falling water out and away.

Upon closer inspection of the entryway sloping away from the door, and the sturdy nature of the hill, whatever space lies beyond the door should be both dry and safe from lightning and hail. the construction seems quite sturdy, so the likelihood of collapse, even in severe condititions such as these, is remote.

The door is heavy but well counterweighted. It is unlocked and opens easily, and it swings shut of its own accord unless propped open.

You recognize the structure called hightower and its history.
-Long ago, a small but mighty humanoid kingdom existed in what is now the local wilderness. Bugbear and ogre warriors fought brutal wars of expansion, earning great fame and amassing considerable fortunes from their predations. Those who died in battle were buried in large tomb complexes dug into hillsides and honored as patrons of the living. Among these tombs was the large tor known as Hightower. Though it was neither the largest nor the most famous of the kingdom’s tombs, Hightower did represent a typical example of this kind of structure. As happens to all such nations, the cruel humanoid kingdom eventually fell to a more powerful foe that razed all its cities and outlying fortifications. Of the tombs, only Hightower escaped destruction—largely because it was an unimportant monument in a remote location.

*This is something known to all humanoid thinking creatures.*
The custom of storm-peace evolved long ago in response to the sudden and severe storms that plague this area. The basic concept is that an automatic truce exists between all individuals and groups who seek shelter in neutral territory during a lightning storm. Such weather is simply too dangerous for fighting, regardless of people’s feelings toward one other. Storm-peace is assumed to be in effect unless someone specifically rejects it. Even so, whenever two strangers meet during a lightning storm, they often greet one another by asking “Storm-peace?” simply to ensure that the other knows and respects the tradition.

as the players arrive individually they arrive rather quickly of one another, once inside the main hall
The stone chamber beyond the entrance measures at least ten paces square. Peeling paint and broken scrollwork suggest that it was once decorated with some care, but now only dust remains. Three massive stone doors—one each to the left and right, and one directly across from the entrance—lead deeper into the tor.

at this time, the players can introduce themselves and talk to each other.

Dagr run in through the entrance of the tor, not stopping until he's well inside the main hall. Once there, he drops his pack and sits down against the wall with a sigh. As others begin to enter, he waves a hand to them, beckoning them further in.

"Awfu nicht for a blatter, aye?" he says, not looking terribly put out now that he's somewhere dryer. "A dinna suppose any of youse have a torch or some chirls aboot you?"

Maria really seems not one to talk much. Her main goal is to get into the Tor as quickly as possible. As she silently enters, she looks about in a cautious manner, as if studying her surroundings and her apparent new companions with suspicion and alertness. After a while she eventually lowered her hood once she was safely inside, revealing the face of a child with long reddish brown hair that fell to her shoulders. Judging by her size and still pretty much mostly prepubescent features.

Is it me or does it look like we have entered some kind of dungeon., she asks in a naturally childlike voice.

"Cheers, Cass is the nam', Bonnie, " Cass says as he shakes off the water from his arms onto the ground.

Upon hearing the new girl, "It is certain off the footpath that is for sure. Maybe this rain is fortunate after we can grab a few coffers for our troubles." Cass starts rubbing his hands thinking off the gold, sure there isn't likely to be a dragon's hoard but everything helps.

The sound of hissing rain, pounding hail, and howling wind from outside is interrupted only by the occasional loud crack of thunder. Still, this room seems stable enough for the most part. Even when the thunder seems to shake the very ground, not so much as a mote of dust filters down from the ceiling. The doors leading into the tor, however, do show signs of weakness, seeming to tremble with every thunderclap.

as you peer outside the storms intensity does not seem to be letting up, its almost as if the storm itself isn't a natural occurrence and something magical may be the reason.

Maria starts to notice something. No dust? In a dungeon? That did not make sense. She also lit a torch and started looking around the room, searching for anything out of the ordinary. For a girl that did not look older than 10 summers, though she was 9, she is very cautious and tries to be alert as possible. She also puts her ear next to each of the doors to see if she hears anything.

Bonnie doesnt hear anything either, nor does she notice anything unsual about the doors themselves, However...

Suddenly, in conjunction with a particularly loud thunderclap, all three doors break open at once, falling from their doorways into the room with a great cacophony. Seconds later, the sounds of squeaking fill the air as a pack of rats swarms in from the largest doorway (Maria and Bonnie are on the door to the right, the rats enter from the door to the left of the main entrance.)

initiative!
(All Monsters act on the same initiative unless otherwise stated)

The rats stand about 5' apart from each other and their closest targets are Dagr and cass who are about 20' away from the closest set of rats.

(*DM note. I will make a battlemap if one is needed, I try to be as detailed as possible with locations of the enemies in conjucture with other items, or creatures. but if its something you guys need I can make a rudimentary map and post it.)

Sorry Starbucks, forgot about your detect magic. You can tell that the belt does have a faint conjuration aura around it. And if you put it on you suddenly feel a bit stronger. As if you can carry more weight than normal.

Instantly, the floor surrounding the chest falls (pitfall trap) and smashes into the ground below. Dust fills the room and clears within a couple of seconds. The room itself tells a story of torture as a table with manacles and dried blood are standing off to the side. As you look up some of the rain is seeping in from the top of the ceiling and you notice that the ceiling stretches all the way up, this is the center of the tor. And the structure the party noticed upon arrival.

There is a storm drain in the middle of the floor with more dried blood, and the only sounds to be heard are those of the rain and thunder.

Just beyond the door about 20 ft opposite of where the party entered, is a path that goes off to the right. And a door straight ahead.
