The new South Park episode aired recently. Personally I thought it was really good especially the bit at the end (I won't spoil it).

Matt Stone and Trey Parker should be knighted for being so brave and doing things other people wouldn't dream of doing.

I caught it this morning (yay TiVo). One of their better episodes of late, I thought.

...They're American. They don't even live in a country that uses knighthood honours. Why would they be knighted?

I think you mean "they don't even live in a country that uses titles to artificially elevate some people over others and maintain a tyrannical form of class hierarchy that exists only to keep those at the top of the heap on the top of the heap".

Somehow I have the feeling that you are a socialogist.
Anyway I don't know the American Equivalent of being knighted but they should at least get a medal and citificate at least.

You would love socialogy then.

Plus this is turning into a slightly political thing so lets get off of the whole knighthood topic.

I've only just got into it as I thought it was just swearingall the time but its good and funny. There was a massive change in tone somewhere around the fifth season. While South Park always contained a healthy dose of social criticism, before the fifth season it was relying to a great part on gross-out humour and total weirdness, after that it became an exceedingly witty show mocking failures of our civilisation with remarkable insight and intelligence, albeit with sometimes almost too much directness. But then, there has to be someone who does that, too.
I don't always agree with their conclusions, but even then they are still funny and smart all of the time, so that's fine.

No, I'm absolutely certain that I would not, in fact, love sociology. Or socialogy. ;)

Agreed. I think that it's become the best social satire on television (or at least American television, not sure how well that aspect would translate to other countries and don't know what other countries have to offer).

As for American awards vis a vis knighthood, I think the closest you'd get would be this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_Medal_of_Freedom) and/or this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congressional_Gold_Medal). I doubt that the South Park guys have much chance at either, though.

I love the later episodes, I put the creators of the show on the same tier as other well known social satirists including Voltaire and Vonnegut. They're just using the pop culture engine of my generation though they're doing the same thing. Though at the same time it's vulgar and crass; I love it.

Eh. Voltaire and Vonnegut never resorted to toilet humor (to my knowledge). I mean, I like the show, and it ties with the Daily Show as my favorite satire on television, I just don't want to give them too much credit.

Also, non-UK citizens can be quasi-knighted with an Honorary Order of the British Empire. I recall Pierce Brosnan (an Irishman) received one in the last few years.

I enjoyed the new episode, but it wasn't one that I'm going to go back and watch again and again.

For those wondering about the tone changing, I think it had a lot to do with Matt Stone taking over production of the show leaving Trey Parker to do all the writing. I definitely like the show better since the change, but it's been feeling a little stale to me since last season. I have no idea if that's Parker's fault or if that's just what shows go through in their 11th season.

The thing about South Park and toilet humor is that they know its gratuitous. And they know they can write smarter. But they write fart jokes in excess just to piss off people who are offended by that kind of humor. It's very tongue in cheek. The way I see it is that a smart joke is a smart joke whether or not it includes the word poop. Hehe, poop.

It was a good episode. I am very glad about this, as it seemed to me that South Park had gone down hill in the 10th season. I'm glad to see that they're pumping some more funny back into my favorite social commentary; I think this will be a good season.

I think Kenny's "real" death was the start of this.

But I think there are more good episodes after Kenny's "real" death than before.

Plus Kenny's death made Butters a man character and everybody loves Butters.

But I think there are more good episodes after Kenny's "real" death than before.Definitely so. Like I said - up until the fifth season, mostly gross-out humour with occasional social commentary. Around fifth/sixth season, change to brilliant social commentary with occasional gross-out humour. And Kenny Dies is the second-last episode of the fifth season and definitely set the tone for what was to come.

Butters takes so much ****. In the entire series he has been given bad lyposuction, almost been drowned by his mum, had a shruiken thrown in to his eye, been crapped on by a dog, beaten by his parents because of Cartman, been forced to eat his own vomit, forced to put latex nuts on his chin, beaten up by a bully for no reason, had Cartman's nuts in his face, been "Hitler'd", been sold to Paris Hilton, seen his tapdancing kill loads of people, shot at by Biggie Smalls, dumped by a Raisen's girl, forced to fake his own death and dress up as a girl, thrown into a video rental box after getting addicted to porn, tricked into believing Cartman is a robot from Japan, locked in a bomb shelter for 2 weeks, forced to down a bottle of cough syrup, and given detention for pulling a funny face which is actually his normal face.

Thankfully he gets his revenge on Cartman in Awesome O.

That's statement doesn't mean much as there are more episodes after Kenny Dies than before. Seasons 1-5 were pre death, 6-11 after. There were definitely good episodes before then, but the show really got awesome in season 6.

Nice to see "South Park" managed to make the leap from the village idiot who occasionally makes savant observations to full-on court jester to America, speaking the truths others daredn't. Makes me sort of regret going off it after the 3rd season or so... :smallamused:

And the worst thing about it is, he's probably the single most good-hearted person in that entire town.

Bad liposuction? I don't remember that, which episode is that?

Thankfully he gets his revenge on Cartman in Awesome O.Indeed. I don't usually use Internet language, but I actually think "completely pwned" is the only expression I know of that accurately describes what happens to Cartman in that episode. From the beginning until the very end.

Both of them used crass humor in places. For instance, Vonnegut drew really bad representations of a vagina and an ******* in Breakfast of Champions and in Voltaire's Candide, Pangloss starts falling apart because a chambermaid gives him syphilis.

The South Park guys are just attempting to push the envelope of television censorship and at the same time appeal to a younger audience who perhaps cannot grasp some of the social messages.
