View Full Version : Adding reach and trip to a different type of weapon

Are there any magical properties that can add reach or the ability to trip an opponent to a base melee weapon that did not possess those qualities prior? I am aware of the Brutal Axe from A&EG, but that only functions on a crit; and all my searches for reach and trip return generic results for optimizing them instead of adding them.

There are several spells that add +5 feet or more to your weapon's reach, but I can't think of any weapon enchantments that do so.

I was thinking the Sweeping weapon property did that, but the latest version in MIC removed that portion of the effect.

The feat Knock-Down (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/divine/divineAbilitiesFeats.htm#knockDown) allows you to make a trip attempt regardless of what type of weapon you're wielding.

Greatreach Bracers (MIC) extend your reach by 10 feet for one round as a swift action 3/day.

Bearskin Armor and Tigerskin armor (MIC) can be activated to grow claws on both hands and extend your natural reach by 5 feet, those claws can be used to make trip attacks.

There are a few feats that extend your natural reach: Aberration Blood + Inhuman Reach (LoM), or Willing Deformity + Deformity: Tall (HoH).

Enlarge Person (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/enlargePerson.htm) + Permanency (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/permanency.htm) will make you large size for a natural reach of 10 feet. Hiring an NPC spellcaster (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/goodsAndServices.htm#spell) to put those on you at the minimum caster level is 2,960 gp, but it's vulnerable to dispelling. If you get a Ring of Spell Storing (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/rings.htm#spellStoring), have the NPC spellcaster put Enlarge Person into it and then use it to cast that on yourself, and do the same thing with Permanency, it can't be dispelled due to the last sentence of Permanency: "Spells cast on other creatures, objects, or locations (not on you) are vulnerable to dispel magic as normal."

Is there a particular reason why you're not using a weapon that has reach and/or can make trip attempts? What's your build?

Edit: One level of Exotic Weapon Master (CW) can get the ability to make trip attempts with any one-handed or two-handed (not light) exotic weapon.

I was brainstorming MWF builds again, and still want to use the Crescent Knives/Scourge from Dragon 275. I am aware of most of the spells and feats that can extend reach or provide the occasional Trip attack; feats are always at a premium, magical buffs can be dispelled, and I have tight build restrictions in terms of classes and prereqs. Thus, I was looking for a way to add reach and the flexibility of tripping to every attack, while making use of the multiple discrete attack rolls via flat bonuses. My usual builds start with non-psionic Thri-Kreen with the Half Minotaur template from DMG 313, which rules out Inhuman Reach and other Humanoid tricks. I am looking for permanent enchantments/enhancements to compliment a build designed to be effective for many rounds of combat and numerous manufactured weapons, rather than blowing their wad in the first 3 rounds of combat each day.

I think the CW version of a Scourge will override/replace the one from a 3.0 issue of Dragon magazine.

You'll already be large size and have longer reach from Half-Minotaur. It's not going to be easy to permanently get longer reach without just getting bigger.

I don't think there's a magic weapon ability that enables trip attacks with the weapon. I'd say go with Exotic Weapon Master to get the trip ability, or take Knock-Down.
