Hello All,

I am playing in a D&D 3.5 game. Currently on a level 5 Rogue who is going down the archery path. Original plan was to take Rogue 1-5, Commando 6-8, Swordsage 9, Commando 10, and Rogue 11-20. I am pretty much a complete newb at D&D. I don't care if my character isn't god-mode optimized and OP, just want him to feel powerful enough and cool to help the group with some occasional flare. I made a post yesterday about item creation and received some feedback on other classes abilities/spells. I am now wondering if I could go Rogue 1-5, Wizard 6, Unseen Seer 7-11, (Maybe Swordsage 12) Rogue 12 or 13-20. As my original character concept is some sort of arcane sniper. delivering powerful shots from range and then using magic to hide/escape/move.

I would like to be able to SA with ranged from basically any distance (snipers shot) and be able to turn myself invisible while also increasing my sneak attack with hunters eye and assassin stance. I want to stay on the archery path and use that with sneak attack for my damage. Am I on the right path or am I going about this all wrong?

My character is a level 5 human rogue. He has Point blank shot, precise shot and rapid shot. His attributes are 12 str, 18 dex, 14 con, 16 int, 11 wis, and 12 cha. If you are able and willing to offer any advice/insight I would greatly appreciate it (if you can go the extra mile to explain and clarify things that would be even more appreciated, please don't assume I know anything, lol)

EDIT: I am open to spellwarp sniper as well, can I take advantage of my already used feats for ranged attacks and apply them to spells?

Yeah, it'd probably be an improvement over what you've got right now. However, it's a bit painful to start casting from zero on level 5. Is retraining on the table? Generally you want to maximize your caster level for the simple fact that stuff like Hunter's Eye [PHBII] turns it into more damage and higher level spell slots allow you to access and eventually persist [Complete Arcane] all the fun stuff (Distant Shot, Sniper's Shot, Golem Strike, Vinestrike, Gravestrike, Hunter's Eye, etc.) "manually". Not to mention, you can get better skill results with Guidance of the Avatar (http://archive.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/sb/sb20010504a9) and Divine Insight [Spell Compendium], which you can access with Advanced Learning (though I like saving the last Advanced Learning for Choose Destiny [Races of Destiny], which is pretty cool and otherwise hard to get).

I generally recommend:
Rogue 1/Wizard 4/Unseen Seer 7/Arcane Trickster 5/Unseen Seer +3

Nothing Spellthief gives you is worth giving up 8 extra skill points for since you have Mage Armor and thus don't care about wearing light armor (or if you do, just get it down to 0 ASF), and Master Spellthief doesn't increase the level of spell you can hold so it essentially just siphons few spells off your opponents (but you should be killing them if you're hitting them for enough).

So you are a human rogue 5. You are an archer. You would like to craft.

My suggestion:
Human Rogue 1: (+0 | +0, +2, +0) Able Learner, Point Blank Shot.
Rogue 2: (+1 | +0, +3, +0)
Rogue 3: (+2 | +1, +3, +1) Rapid Shot
Rogue 4: (+3 | +1, +4, +1)
Rogue 5: (+3 | +1, +4, +1)
Combat Wizard (from unearthed arcana) 6: (+3 | +1, +4, +3) Precise Shot, Weapon Focus: Longbow; Trade Summon Familiar for an immediate magic (conjuration or illusion, from unearthed arcana)
Chameleon 7: (+3 | +1, +4, +3)
Chameleon 8: (+4 | +1, +4, +3) free bonus feat which you can change daily to the crafting feat you want
Unseen Seer 9: (+4 | +1, +4, +5) Dead Eye
Unseen Seer 10: (+5 | +1, +4, +6)
Unseen Seer 11: (+6 | +2, +5, +6)
Unseen Seer 12: (+7 | +2, +5, +7) Practiced Spellcaster: Chameleon
Swordsage 13: (+7 | +2, +7, +9)
Unseen Seer 14: (+7 | +2, +7, +9)
Unseen Seer 15: (+8 | +3, +8, +10) Craven
Unseen Seer 16: (+9 | +3, +8, +10)
Rogue 17: (+10 | +4, +9, +11)
Rogue 18: (+11 | +4, +9, +11) Choose your own feat!
Sneak Attack Fighter 19: (+12 | +6, +9, +11)
Spellthief 20: (+12 | +6, +9, +13)

You get 6th level arcane or divine spells, 10d6 sneak attack, a floating feat that you can use for crafting, and immediate magic fun. If you wanted a heavier focus on rays I can do a different one, or a heavier focus on crafting and we can do yet another one. Want to use a crossbow? No problem!

Rogue 1/Wizard 4/Unseen Seer 7/Arcane Trickster 5/Unseen Seer +3

Some variations:

If you take Wizard 5/Arcane Trickster 4 instead of Wizard 4/Arcane Trickster 5, you can pick up the spontaneous divination ACF which combines well with <x> strike spells.

If you are a Naenhoon Illumian, taking Sacred Exorcist 1/Arcane Trickster 4 instead of Arcane Trickster 5 gives you easy persistent spell.

A Rogue 3/Wizard 2 can pick up the Penetrating Strike ACF, giving a universal half-bypass to sneak attack immunity.

For the OP, you might try: Rogue 5/Cleric 15 taking the Sacred Outlaw feat. Your wisdom is kind of terrible, but you can scrape by with a wisdom enhancement item + (eventually) an inherent bonus. Alternatively, if academic priest is available, that's helpful. The advantage of Cleric is that you get easy access to persistent spell allowing you to DMM[Persist] Divine Power for example.
