Hey folks,

After a conversation at our table about the irrelevance of the d4, I was inspired to design a character that utilizes a d4 for as many things as possible, while still being functional (optimized is probably too much to ask!) Any suggestions?
Not interested in homebrew; official material is preferred but UA might be acceptable. I'm looking mostly for a general build and/or synergies, not just a list of all features in the game, but feel free to point out the more obscure ones (i.e. outside the PHB) that I might have overlooked. Thanks!

Some sort of elf (propably wood) with Double-bladed Scimitar (from WGtE, does 2d4 damage with 1d4 as bonus action) and access to Bless?

Well off the top of my head the d4 is used for: Guidance, Bless, daggers, a bunch of unarmed strikes, Magic Missile, Elemental Weapon, Dragonmark intuition, Favored by the Gods, Kensei Shot, Vitrolic Sphere, the wild sorcerer uses it for something I think. So I wouldn't exactly call it irrelevant, if you wanted to flaunt a lot of d4s then you could just be a Tabaxi Divine Soul sorcerer and use a lot of the previously mentioned things.

Add healing potions and Healing Word to that list.

EDIT: And most improvised weapons.

Divine Favor from the Paladin list grants and extra 1d4 radiant damage per hit. Also 3 levels into Brute Fighter gives you an extra 1d4 damage per hit.

d12 is more irrelevant than the d4.

But you could design an improvised weapon master, like a Street tough whose favorite weapons are a brick and a broken bottle.

There's also the sling, the whip, the dart, the club, and the sickle.

I second Healing Word. That ranged Bonus Action D4 to stand up a player with two death fails AND you have an action left to boot is just too good

For a Bard you'll have the chance to use more D4's (up to 4 eventually) with Vicious Mockery after you cast Healing Word. The damage is a bonus BUT the disadvantage is a big deal.

I mean, you could just play as a Magic Missile specialist:

Hexblade 1, Wizard X.

If UA is allowed I'd do a Brute Fighter 5 / Divine Soul Sorc 1 / Raven Queen Warlock 3 / Swashbuckler Rogue X with the Double-bladed Scimitar (feat). You'll need to be an elf with decent charisma, high Dex and good Con (middling str & dump int).

The double bladed scimitar is a 2d4 weapon with a 1d4 bonus action.
Brute Fighter gives you the Great Weapon fighting style (as the double bladed scimitar is a two handed weapon) and Brute Force increases damage by an additional 1d4 ("Whenever you hit with a weapon that you’re proficient with and deal damage").
At 4, for an ASI, you grab the revenant blade feat it gains finesse and the bonus action 2d4 attack. Level 5 gives an extra attack.
Divine Soul Sorc 1 gives Bless (1d4 on attack, check & saving throws) and the Favored by the Gods ability to add 2d4 to an failed attack or saving throw
Raven Queen Warlock 3 gives you a raven faux-miliar, 2 invocations, but most importantly the Pact of the Tome Boon, Allowing you to grab both guidance and Vicious Mockery, a 2d4 ranged attack (as you get it at level 7).
Swashbuckler Rogue further increases the damage you deal, increases your initiative by your charisma, gives a free disengage from those you hit, and allows you to sneak attack when going one-on-one (which is easier due to the armor of a fighter base), tacking on up to an additional 6d6 damage.

So your normal attack will be a pair of attacks dealing 3d4 damage (Brute Double-bladed Scimitar) followed by a 3d4 bonus action attack (rerolling any 1 or 2s via GWF), with the first that hits is a sneak attack (via Rakish Audacity, or Advantage gained via the Sentinel Raven or the Darkness/Devil's Sight Combo). When out of range, you can use Vicious Mockery for 2d4-4d4 damage, or help your allies with Bless & Guidance.

You'll have a total of 4 spell slots (2 1st level LR slots, 2 2nd level SR slots) and 9 cantrips (2 Warlock, 4 Sorcerer, 3 Pact of the Tome).

Don't forget that Enlarge/Reduce used as a buff adds 1d4 to weapon damage

Ok, what I'd aim for, going for rolling a maximum number of d4's:
- use a 1d4 weapon, and get extra attacks
- use elemental weapon; adding (at some point) 3d4 to your attack rolls
- see if you can get your hands on a magic weapon of choice. If this is by any means possible: the Radkos Riteknife (GGtR) is a dagger (1d4) that can do up to 5d4(!) extra damage.

Given all this, I'd come up with something like the following build: dex paladin 9, dagger & shield. Cast Bless & divine favor for 1d4 bonus on attacks and saves for you and your allies, and 1d4 extra damage respectively. At 5, get extra attack. At 9, get elemental weapon. Switch to Sorcerer (any subclass will do), get quicken and extend spell. This way, you can make 2 attacks with your primary weapon, and as a bonus action another attack with it through one of the SCAG cantrips. This is much better than two weapon fighting, both in damage as in rolled d4's, once you get the Riteknife. And you can wield a shield, if you also pick warcaster.

In the best case, this leads to: a 3d4 precast (2 hour duration) elemental weapon on a 1d4 dagger with 5d4 bonus damage, and you can make 3 attacks (one bonus quickened), for 27d4 damage in total - already almost 70 damage. And that's without 3x dex modifier, without the xd8 extra damage from Greenflame or Booming Blade, and without all the d8's you can choose to add with Smite. Pretty decent damage, and plenty of room to tweak the build in any direction you'd like (through spells known, feats, etc.).

Vitriolic sphere combined with Spell Bombardment and Empowered Spell metamagic means you'll be rolling A LOT of d4's

Edit: Dang, that's level 18 at least. Probably not what you want then :')
