100 Silly Scrolls

[Vogie]

I want to increase the loot that my players run into as they're running through Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, but am running into a small issue:

Part of the game is that the players are poorer than usual, as they needed to go into debt for chapter 2 (no spoilers) and are working that out as a plot point, so "just more gold" is out.
An abundance of magic armor & weapons will reduce the difficulty of the various encounters that they're going to stumble over.

My idea, and something I need more of, are scrolls of spells that... aren't great. Specifically, spells that are silly and/or thematic in the world in which they live, but not necessarily useful in combat, with effects that would be something that would make sense to be "automated" by magic, but less than 50gp in value.

I'd love to have 100 to make it into a full d100 list

Just go through the list of guilds in Waterdeep and pick 5-10 tasks that could be done with cantrips or 1st level spells and tailor them to that. Using magic to perform the duties like this is part of the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors. They scribe the scrolls and then sell the directly to the guild responsible for the activity as to not step on their toes except in emergency situations like fires.

In terms of things you can hand out to players in WD:DH other than gold or magic. Mundane items such as tools are just fine. Healing Potions and Anti-Toxin are also good choices. Clockwork/Mechanical trinkets are another option. Plenty of common magic items are available as well. Waterdeep is full of wealth, items that are stylish a sword that glows on command, or utility such as lightweight versions of armor that could be worn under clothes. Weapons that are enchanted to be invisible on command. Plenty of options to give them something interesting without it providing a true mechanical combat bonus.

I would go with things useful in a medieval world but that look trivial to our eyes: just think of what technology allows us to do easily but was a real effort in the past.

I love this idea - I'm of the same opinion that I want to put magic item shops but that means either purposely putting in items they cant afford or giving them gear that will ratchet up their power levels.

Revive flowers last 6 hours only cosmetic. Soesnt provide life force. Permanent death when spell ends.

Shuck seafood. Crabs, clams, shrimp, up to a cubic foot at a time. Spell ends if used on live animal.may work on corn.

Abacus user can do math faster amd correct, dependant on numbers being read correctly.

Clothes dying. Permanent color change leaves aura. Good for charlatans.

Sate hunger. Last 8 hours. Feels like you ate juat enough. Perfect for the poor diplomat sitting through long meetings.

Prayer service. Read as if by a member of the clergy. Includes pauses for silence and applause if appropriate.

Identify pest. Won't get rid of them, thats extra.

I love these and might actually steal the lot. I have made lists as well of not-so-precious loot, just for fluff. Bandits carrying handkerchiefs and a half-eaten roll of sweets, kobolds carrying 2 buttons and a blackened tooth, warehouses stacked with crates that contain basic trading goods like cloths or ingots (not worthless, but rather heavy/bulky and they'd need to find specific buyers for it).

This is how you find that random, haa nothing to do with the main plot, NPC that the pcs MUST visit everytime theyre in town. They find someome to trade with, and it helps build immersion with the world.

Scroll of protection against scrolls(protects you from spells cast from scrolls and also creatures conjured by scrolls and also from animated scrolls and from being controlled)

This gave me inspiration for a villain. Running around a research facility casting animate object on scrolls. Death by a thousand papercuts.

Inspired by inatalling a door today

Scroll of plumbing. Creates plumblines that allow the user to see if two objects are plumb in all directions.

Thanks old house with slightly crooked door frame and slanted sidewalk making this project take twice as long.
