Hi everyone!

This is the 4th version of a play-by-post game that uses Magic The Gathering cards to collaboratively develop a new roleplaying world.

Players at the moment are:
JoshuaZ
JbeJ275
hannahbbug3
Goliathus
Wasp

If you are interested in joining, please post here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?587787-MTG4-Finding-Players-World-Creation-with-Magic-Cards)!

A Meta-Thread for discussions is here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?589876-MTG4-OOC-World-Building-with-Magic-The-Gathering-Cards)

And here are the rules!

0. This is supposed to be just a fun way to create a world together with Magic the Gathering Cards with the goal to create a setting for a role playing game.

1. Players can place elements in the world that are represented by Magic Cards. This means the game doesn't have to go through an evolutionary process to get to intelligent life. Things can be spontaneously created.

2. The world map is a 5x5 grid and the 25 potential region are identified by a letter from A to E and anumber from 1 to 5, so the regions go from A1 to E5. During play we will populate a number of regions with magic cards that represent the terrain in that region (preferably a land card, but other cards could work as a representation of terrain as well). Any region not occupied by a card will stay water. Adjacent regions with cards will usually form a common land mass (deviations from that are possible). The map can be found below the rules.

3. New turns start each

Sunday, Tuesday and Friday 9 pm Los Angeles
Monday, Wednesday and Saturday 12 am New York
Monday, Wednesday and Saturday 5 am London
Monday, Wednesday and Saturday 12 om Hong Kong

Every player can play one card each turn. It’s always first come first serve, but please no back to back posts (as this is against the board rules). Players can agree to change start times of course.

4. With every turn time moves forward. When you play a card, the associated event happens after everything that happened before. However, if it makes more sense that a new element may be just newly "discovered" that is possible too. Just use common sense.

5 Turns:
a) Every player can place one Magic The Gathering Card per turn in one of the regions to introduce something new to the world or change it in some way.
b) The first person placing a card in a region can name the region. Any card added to a region changes it in some way - it creates grassland, changes grassland to desert, adds a second related terrain, populates it with elves, builds a fortress, introduces a legendary creature etc.
c) Each player can interpret the card they play as they want, they may take inspiration from the art, the flavor text, the mechanics or the name to set something up in the world. I would recommend though to change Names to make this world feel more unique.
d) After the Mystic Past stage (see 6 below) every play should try to reference something that's already been established to connect stuff. It's encouraged to play together on emerging storylines and build upon each other or create a back and forth.
e) If players want to keep something a bit vague they can describe the new element as an in-game text (a legend, a history book, a payer, a prophecy) written by someone from that world to indicate they have established something that may have happened this way or another. But they can also write it down as "normal" description of the events taking place.

6. Game Stages: There are three game stages.
a) The Mystic Past. This stage lasts until 12 regions have been populated with at least one card representing the terrain. As long as a region has no cards, a player can ONLY play a card there that represents a type of terrain. However players CAN decide to play cards in regions that have already a card there (for example to populate a region even if there are still regions that are "water"). This shapes the geography and the mysteries during creation.
b) The Ancient Past. This stage lasts until at least half of players vote to move on.
Players can play cards that shape the geography, races, societies, cultures, some individuals, etc. from the creation through ancient history (everything is fair game, just keep an inner logic)
b) The Recent Past. This stage lasts until players agree to stop.
Cards that shape the recent interactions, events, etc. (anything in the last generation or two, there usually aren't any geography changes anymore, probably no new races appear, but maybe are there more individuals shaping the recent events). This is used to set-up recent events etc for the RPG game.

7. Posting format:
a) Post the number of the region where you want to place a new card (A1 ... A5, B1 ... B5 etc)
b) Name the card you drew or selected and post a link on the Gatherer (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Default.aspx).
c) Name the region if you are the first placing a card there
d) Write down a short text how the card moves the world forward and add a one sentence summary to make it easier keep track of events.
e) Finally post the updated History of the World by adding your one sentence summary to the previous History
f)

Play:

Play: C3Llanowar Reborn (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=405285): The First Forest

"But when the old world died not everything was destroyed – Freyalise had rescued a single seedling imbued with the hopes and dreams of what came before. And she planted it and it grew and transformed and brought life to the Reborn World. And soon there was the First Forest."

The First Forest grows from a seedling that survived the destruction of the World Before.

1. C3: The First Forest grows from a seedling that survived the destruction of the World Before.

8. If you want, you can use the following link to get to a random Magic card and shuffle through some cards until you have found one you like OR you can just chose your cards any other way you like: Random Card (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?action=random).

9. We will decide when something comes up we didn't think about. As stated in Rule 0: The goal is just to create a fun world together!

And this is our map (I will update it after the first few lands have been posted)

Play: Terrain Generator: (http://https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=393873) Artifice of the Worldspirit

While the surface of the world was empty, flat and dead, the world itself was alive, a crystal heart and magma flowing through it’s veins. A spirit that would nurture all the world’s children and give them little gifts of magic. First though the world must be formed. With that in mind the world spirit exerted a great effort and up from the ink depths emerged a tower of gleaming light. It brought down rocks from the sky and mud from below. It would allow the rest of the world to form around it but would always be the place on the surface where the world spirit was strongest.

The world itself has some level of sentience, and exerts it’s will to create a spire that will aid in the formation of the rest of the surface.

Play B3: Vivid Crag (https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=447012) The River Dales and the Green Mountains

West of the World Spire bold crags and cavernous mountains emerged and on the the highest peaks glaciers formed. And when the first spring came, the melting waters cascaded down the cliffs into the labyrinth of ravines and valleys and brought the source of life with them. Together with the influence of the Spire the valleys grew into lush dells abundant with rivers and forests - the River Dales. And the trees soon conquered even the steepest mountainsides giving the area its other name; the Green Mountains.

West of the World Spire the fertile River Dales and the Green Mountains emerge

Even further South, the water from the River Dales flowed into a dark marsh. Deep in the marsh, strange creatures began to grow. Whether these were truly even alive was difficult to say. In time the marshes would grow further, and their tendrils of strange magic would stretch out further across the young world.

Play E1: Arcane Sanctum (https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=426053) The Splintered North

The tremors of magic from the tower were felt far and wide, and in a small corner of the world, it caused the terrain to crack and animate. Great islands rose above the chaotic waters, held aloft by the raw power of the arcane magic shaping the world.

The Splintered North rises from the water as floating, magical islands borne aloft by raw, untamed magic.

Play E5: Skybreen (https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=198101) -- Windcliffs

The magic was strong on the edges of the world. On the very southeastern edge of the world, the gravity pulled a barrage of rocks from the sky and formed a wide mountain range full of peaks and valleys. As the mountain range built up, the gravity anomaly was weakened and could only attract strong winds. The strong winds blew from all sides might not be able to move mountains, but dropped the temperature below absolute zero around the area.

The Windcliffs take shape in the southeastern edge of the world.

Play E2: Skyline Cascade (https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=402038)Mistveil Canopy

South of the Splintered North the raw magic that caused the islands to rise and float above the ocean was felt as well, but here the sea floor grew upwards together with only a few islands that were lifted into the sky - forming a rugged landscape of cliffs and canyons with some smaller islands levitating above. And from most of these floating islands water emerged and cascaded down where it gathered in rivulets, streams and lakes and shrouded the land in constant mist. And with this the seeds that came with the wind from the southwest plant life started to grow in the socalled Mistveil Canopy.

South of the Splintered North the Mistveil Canopy is created

As the river’s meander through the Ebon marsh, they pick up jagged detritus and black-stained sand. Eventually it flocks hrough into rockier sands, but erodes a series of stepped waterfall, plunging down into rapids of black water. Eventually it meets the sea in a final and allmighty waterfall, crashing into the ocean below. Still, the water brings a strange election of foul oozes to these cliffs.
The rivers from Ebon marches go through rocklike hills, carving waterfalls on their way to the sea.

Play E3: Ground Seal (https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=29991) The Standing Stones

Slowly, the roiling magic which formed the Splintered North and Mistveil Canopy took on order. Along the leyline of the Worldspire, the magic gave rise to uniform circles of stone, upon which runes were emblazoned, revealing the most intricate truths of the world.

Magic along the leyline of the Worldspire gives rise to the Standing Stones.

Play E4: Gemstone Caverns (https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=122094) The Cavernae Arcanae.

Deeply connected to the same ley forces which gave rise to the Standing Stones, the Cavernae Arcanae arose, a series of deep caves. Only the deepest of the caves contained the mystical gemstones which would one day give the entire cavern systems their name. The caves themselves existed due to natural geological forces, but the strange crystals inside grew from the interaction of the caves with the ley lines above. As the arcane forces in the caves collected, living beings which found their way into the caverns found their offspring changed, sometimes hideously, sometimes beautifully, but always with an unmistakably otherworldly aspect.

The ley line forces create the Cavernae Arcanae with mystical gems deep inside.

Play D3: Leyline of Lifeforce (https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=107695): Ley Resonance forms.

Harmonic resonances among the leylines between the World Spire and the Standing Stones create further ley forces. Along these resonant ley lines, lifeforms grow larger, and some lifeforms conceived near them exhibit strange magic of their own.

16. (D3) Harmonic resonances form between the Worldspire and the Standing Stones.

1: (C3) The world itself has some level of sentience, and exerts it’s will to create a spire that will aid in the formation of the rest of the surface.
2: (B3) West of the World Spire the fertile River Dales and the Green Mountains emerge.
3: (B4) South of the River Dales the Ebon Marshes form.
4: (E1) The Splintered North rises from the water as floating, magical islands borne aloft by raw, untamed magic.
5: (E5) The Windcliffs take shape in the southeastern edge of the world.
6: (E2) South of the Splintered North the Mistveil Canopy is created.
7: (A4) The rivers from Ebon marches go through rocklike hills, carving waterfalls on their way to the sea.
8: (E3) Magic along the leyline of the Worldspire gives rise to the Standing Stones.
9: (E4) The ley line forces create the Cavernae Arcanae with mystical gems deep inside.
10: (E4) The Frost Fangs form a natural wall protecting the lands north from the cold of the Windcliffs.
11: (C4) The dark swamp of the Ebon Marshes gives way to a forest to the east, which remains no less dark and twisted.
12: (C3) Around the Worldspire open invisible gateways to the Primal Beyond
13: (C2) North of the Worldspire, simple grasslands arise.
14: (D2) East of the Grasslands gigantic "Bridges" of earth and rock are formed
15. (A1) Enormous Leviathans form in the northern oceans
