No, they use a material component pouch. (https://www.sageadvice.eu/2015/03/23/component-pouch/)

You can only use an item as a focus if you have an ability that specifically allows you to do so (and it'll tell you specifically what kind of items you can use as a focus). For example, the Wizard has the following class feature:

SPELLCASTING FOCUS
You can use an arcane focus (found in chapter 5) as a spellcasting focus for your wizard spells.

and a Paladin has this one:

SPELLCASTING FOCUS
You can use a holy symbol (found in chapter 5) as a spellcasting focus for your paladin spells.

You can however use a Ruby of the War Mage to use a simple or martial weapon as a focus (https://twitter.com/jeremyecrawford/status/958068645493538821?lang=en), since it grants an ability worded similarly to the Spellcasting Focus feature.

Hope that helps, and happy gaming!

Follow up question on this - can an Arcane Trickster use an Arcane focus if multiclassed with Wizard? Wizards can use Arcane Foci for Wizard spells. Arcane Tricksters use the Wizard spell list. I don’t have be books in front of me but would this work?

Yes, the Arcane Trickster's Spellcasting is worded as calling them 'wizard spells', satisfying the requirements of the Spellcasting Focus in the Wizard's rules.

More or less what I figured, but I wasn't 100%.
