Big orc: No, they do not give you extra skill points. And I hope you don't mind but I am going to take a few key pieces of loot that Crog picked up that are rather important to the campaign. Crog, before he leaves, gives a book to Aleash.

An Ice Fan: 100 gp per identify. The stone horse is a Destrier Stone Horse, command word is Tabletop. The plate is PART of an ancient artifact, known as the Castle of Wonders. If held in a doorway and the command word is spoken, it will open a portal to that part of the castle of wonders. This particular piece takes you to The Stables.

Ryuuk: The Bejeweled Tea Set of Wee Jas- while extremely valuable (at least as far as tea sets go) you can sell it for 950 gp. It is not magical. If you find a follower of wee jas who has that kind of money, they would most likely pay more.

I have pm'd Katasi and Reptilius to see what they want to do.

Sorry big orc.

WB reptilius. Did you want to change aleash in anyway or entirely before we continue?

EDIT: Well I kind of have the answer to my question at the moment...

Moving on. I will have a post so we can continue tomorrow.

Can I take Leadership?

borninbones
2008-04-04, 07:30 PM
I am sorry, but leadership is a no. I have allowed it in the past and as most of this campaign has been underground or crawling over ruins, I am going to have to say no. But perhaps as the campaign progresses, maybe later.

On a side note, since no one asked about prestige classes, I might as well get it out now, ask I and I will tell you if its ok. Most are fine, some are too powerful for any campaign.

Ok, since we're on the subject, I am considering going Slayer (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/prestigeClasses/slayer.htm). The original plan was to go Elocater, but I made another PC recently that got to play around with it. As such, I'm trying to steer Guicho from movement based (which might not have been the best choice in a dungeon crawl) to a Psi-Gish (gotta find a use for the Longsword after all).

Most of its abilities wouldn't see much play, as the class was originally Illithid Slayer. The SRD version is a bit more flexible, so instead of Favored Enemy: Illithid, he'd take Favored Enemy: Human (Psionic).

In the odd chance it comes up, this would let him use Enemy Sense to find others like him, other humans with PP reserves. I'd originally seen him as having been born a strong psion, but after a nasty incident he got "fixed" (explaining the scar and the strange looks from those that remembered it). He's "remembering" it now and slowly relearning it, so finding others that could help him answer some questions would be a high priority. As would making sure no one gets messing with the wiring anymore (something the Slayer is pretty good at)

Anyway, after looking at the original thread, it looks like we rolled HP. Here are the other two levels:

Psion [roll0] +2
Slayer [roll1] +2

A month has passed since you reached the small town. Most of you stayed in town at the explorers guild hall that was built during those thirty days. The living has been nice. You can honestly say you know each other quite well by the end of the thirty days.

You are summoned and brought to where a library is being constructed in the basement. Sitting across a long table is a man. Not just any man, but the current ruler of the mainland. By and large the most important man on the planet. (human male, approximately 40 with red hair and a beard wearing dark clothes).

"Most of this god forsaken continent remains unexplored and unsettled. This is a problem solved only by time and people we call frontiersman. You are well renowned. Yes, your exploits have even reached my ears. While this bit about Him is bothersome, its something I can someone in the church take care of. But these glowing elves, we would like some kind of diplomatic treatise with them. What the good people of Arcturia would like from you is for you to travel back to the ruins. We want you to take a diplomat and a small contingent of priests, 5 in all. Take the priests to this Lantern Archon and take the Diplomat to the elves. Then, if everything goes according to plan, you will return with all 5. If everything does not go according to plan... Well, I am sure you'll think of something. The priests and the diplomat will be here tomorrow. Your reward will be discussed on your return. Any questions?"

Shauni

Shauni, never really appreciative of summons, dawdles until the latest possible minute, entering soon enough to catch the gist of the ruler's assignment. She sits on the table.

"Just one question. Can we keep whatever we find? And if we can't, can we charge a finder's fee?"

Guicho

Guicho listened to the man's words carefully. His expression became somewhat gloomier as the his current ruler talked. By the time he was done, Guicho's face sported a the sort of grimace one might expect from a sailor as his ship sailed straight into a maelstrom. He knew it quite well, he'd seen quite a few before he stumbled into Sailor's Refuge. Realizing this, he sighed and slowly came to peace with the idea of going back to that spider infested place.

He wasn't entirely happy with it, but he had to admit he was more ready for it now then he had been the first time. He wasn't quite as hopeless with that blade of cold steel as he was when he'd first found it. The same applied to the other tool he'd discovered before hitting land, even if many a question had been left unanswered.

"So we'll just be acting as escorts, alright. Have these guys been into the wilderness before or are they mostly the scholarly type?"

((your spell failed.))

The priests are well travelled but are a bit on the puritanical side. The diplomat is a simple man who is, how shall we put it, weak? Pathetic? Ah, non-aggresive. Yes, he is non-aggressive. When the priests go their way, you will stay with the diplomat until he is ready to return. His survival is your priority.

As for whatever you have worked out with the explorer's guild, that is between you and them. I don't care.

"Haha. You're funny. You'll be happy with what you are given. And that depends on the success of your 'mission'. Wait here." He turns and opens up a door behind him. "This is your diplomat. A young half-elf in his twenty's, carrying an armload of books, stumbles through the doorway.

"H-hi!" He says nervously. "I have gone over your reports of this. I have it here." He reaches to pull out a paper from the books and proceeds to drop the books everywhere. "Oops." He quickly gathers them back up.

The leader looks at you. "Good luck." Several priests come in after he slips out the back door. They are wearing the symbology of WeeJas and have on Chainmail armor. Each is armed with a two handed mace. One is older and has a scar running around his face and cutting across a patched eye. His voice is gruf. "My name is Anthony. This is Drak..." He points to a taller dark haired man wearing red. "Vera..." He points to a woman with long redish blonde hair and very stern features. "And Chyron." A young cheery blond kid waves. "Hi." Dark and Vera only nod. The older man continues "This is Micale." He pats the diplomat on the back, who drops his books again. Chyron helps him with the books. "I understand you are to be our guides and his bodyguard. When do we leave?"

Aleash

Aleash listens to the account of the situation from the ruler. He is a little disconcerted that their mission is a bit open ended. Because he had no more specific missions form the order, he chooses to accept the proposed mission.

After the diplomat and priests have been introduced, he rises and takes the hand of Anthony.
Well met Anthony. I am Aleash. I believe we can take the rest of today in preparation and leave at first light in the morning. Do all of you have mounts?

I still haven't leveled Aleash up. I will try and get that done ASAP. He is pretty much taking 2 levels of Paladin.

Ryuuk: How I missed your prestige class post, I don't know. But i did. Slayer is fine. I don't like the fact that you can take it at 5th level and most are designed so that you can't take them till 6th. After looking at it however, it seems alright. I really like the fluff part.

For a second, Guicho imagined Micale trying to trying to come to terms with the "ghost" elves in the ruins. Sadly, the image didn't seem too promising. He shrugs and gets up As long as he can build up some confidence by the time we get down there.

"No objections here Aleash. Anthony, Micale, everyone, pleasure to meet you all, my name's Guicho." He takes a courteous bow as he says this. "We're a bit larger of a group then the first time. As you exit the hall, you are now in the booming village. Everywhere, there is commotion, someone hawking wears, 3 blacksmiths all busy. A group of men are looking at an open area with some large plans in their hands. The smell of fresh bread wafts through the air from the new bakery. There is a burst of song from the tavern as everyone bursts out in a well known drinking song. I say we take it easy, spend the day gathering supplies, news of the roads, that sort of thing."

He takes a good look at the atmosphere , a wide smile spreading across his face. "Possibly spend the night relaxing before leaving first thing in the morning." his eyes landing on Drath, he chuckles. "He seems to know what I mean, odd, always thought wizards were a bit more bookish."

Once he realises that they were serious, he heads back up to his room, takes out his spell book and starts preparing spells. He then throws his few things into his bag, heads out to town and buys the following: 10 bottles of wine(10g each total 100g), 1 glass (2g), crowbar (2g), 1 tent (10g), 1 portable ram (10g), 50 ft of silk rope (10g), 2 water skins filled with water (1g each total 2g), 1 vial of alchemists fire (20g), 1 thunderstone (30g), 2 sunrods ( 2g each total 4g), 1 tindertwig (1g), 1 wagon (35g), 1 light warhorse (150g), 1 riding saddle (10g), 10 sheets of paper (4s each 4g total), 10 torches (1c each 1s total), 1 sack (1s), 2 vials of ink (8g each 16g total), 1 inkpen (1s) for a total of 406.3g, leaving me with 550.5g after the drinks. The clear day is perfect for riding. You make very good time and reach the stone at about 3 (instead of 8 like last time). You can continue, but doing so means you will reach the ruins at night. If you wait until the next morning then you will reach the ruins in the day.

…and here I thought Wizards were usually soft spoken and patient. Guicho rests cross armed against Bones’ head while he looks off into the horizon, towards the ruins. “Don’t worry; we’re making good time, better then the last trip anyway. If we kept going we’d be able to reach them by tonight, but we’d have a full day’s ride behind us. Not the best way one would want to challenge the ruins.”

He gets up, gives his mount a pat on the side and dismounts, stretching his legs once he’s on the ground. “Our other option would be to rest here for a while, we’d lose some time but we’re in no rush. Better to reach the site fresh I’d say.”

Guicho

Guicho gratefully accepts a piece and is caught halfway through a drink from his waterskin when Anthony asked for the tale. He finishes it and secures it, before drying his lips with his sleeve and reminiscing. “I’d have to say it started by chance really.” He sits down on a nearby stone, letting his pack lay by his side. Hunched forward, with his elbows on his knees, he continues. “The ruins had just barely been discovered. A small group of researchers went to check them out, but only one came back. She had pretty much lost her mind though, muttering and screaming like she was possessed or something. Anyway, the father of one of the researchers that had gone missing wasn’t willing to spend the rest of his life wondering what happened to his son. He sought out people willing to travel there and find out.”

“That’s how Sandstrider, Shauni , Aleash and I met actually. There were a few others, but some some of them didn’t show when we set off, others just sort of went missing when we got to the ruins or simply. There was this one in particular, an orc that seemed to be missing a few things in the attic. He was a good man, with us till the end, easily strong enough to give Sandstrider a run for his money in an arm wrestling contest, glad I wasn’t on the other side of his axe when he had an urge to break something. Said he was going to spend the money to look for a friend…” He takes another bit from the jerky, lost in thought. After swallowing, he snaps his fingers; he’d gotten a bit off track.

“Ah, yes, the rescue. Well, at least I wasn’t expecting what we ran into when we got there. When I think ruins, I think old, crumbling, uninhabited buildings. They got the old part down right, except for the traps of course, those were pretty well preserved.” Unconsciously, one of his hands goes to his chest, where underneath his shirt still rested the scar from door to the “greatest treasure in existence”. “There was some crumbling, but even then some of the architecture, the bridge on the entrance in particular, was pretty impressive. It didn’t seem to understand the notion of uninhabited though, there are at the very least to varieties of elves down there, as well as some strange evil that some kind of archon mentioned and at least a bit before our trip there was also a tribe of kobolds and an nest of stupidly large spiders.”

He continues, pausing only to take a keep working on the jerky or to let someone else interject. "Anyway, the elves we ran into were, in the end, pretty reasonable folk. They had Joseph in custody, they said he’d committed a murder, but let him go after we got proof of his innocence. He was alright, if a bit shaken. We never found out what drove the lone survivor crazy, but there’s probably a good chance of it being what you folks are going to be looking into. She did got better after seeing Joseph at least. As long as you’re not claustrophobic, the place is bearable."

When Drath arrives back to hear about an orc looking for a friend he immediatly thinks back to his own past with an orc, an elf and a dwarf. They were the most unlikely of friends but they always stayed together till they got lost in a storm.

"That orc owes me 10 000 gold! Not that I care about the money or anything. We were friends of old. We traveled the world with Slyfin and a dwarf named Veit. The closest were Slyfin and Crog and I think that Crog owes Slyfin more than anyone else owes anyone in this world. We stopped counting that debt once it surpased 1 000 000 000 gold. But one night, they had a fight. They both left the camp, and of course no one really worried because they are pretty good at tracking and should easily be able to find there way back. But that night, a storm broke loose unleashing all of hell with it. They never got back to the camp. We waited a few days then figured that they must have been attacked by the group of Gnolls we had been tracking. We thought they were dead and went home, knowing that without them we had no choice but to leave. On our way though, we got hit by another storm and I never found Veit again. I went my own way, asking around taverns if anyone had ever seen them but after a year I decided that they were lost for good. I joined the explorers and rarely thought of them since." Drath looks at the others. "And you have been with him for the past little while. I should never have given up on them. They were the best of friends, I only hope I will see them again. Raging sycopath, short old cleric, our main tracker." Draths eyes seem to loose focus for a while as if staring at some distant point, "Oh well, I'm living in the past." He gets up and says "Goodnight friends, I will see you in the morning." He heads to his already set up tent and goes to sleep.

Dark to Sandstrider "Stranger things have happened before."

Anthony listens intently through the story. "Kobolds, spiders and traps. Oh my. That archon you spoke of is why we are here. The elves are his problem." He nods to the clumsy archivist. After Drath leaves, "different duck that one is." he says in reference to the wizard slipping away to sleep.

A whistle comes from up on top of the rock as Chyron points. Anthony nods and the inquisitors all arm themselves. The ground begins to rumble. The rumbling may be enough to wake the wizard. Vera drops the two-handed mace in favor of a shortbow. As the rumbling gets louder from the north; Chyron drops down and switches to a greatsword. "What is it?" Anthony asks. "Dunno, tree cover. We'll know in a minute." Dark remains calm and puts his two handed mace away. At this point the party may realize that the inquisitors are far better armed then it seems at first. The brush gives way to a lone huge triceratops. It is simply walking out. The party has most likely armed themselves by this point.

third round:

if this does not kill it and the thing is not attacking Drath, Drath will go to sleep

if it does attack Drath, Drath will run to his horse at any point (even those rounds where i said what it did) and escape with it.

Guicho

"Well, there were kobolds, but the spiders got rid of them, then we got rid of the spiders so-" At the sudden disturbance and at the drawing of weapons, Guicho readies himself as well. He wields the longsword and closes his eyes, giving it a few quick swings as a high pitched humming seems to resonate from his position. The same blade that he fumbled with back in the ruins now looks like an extension of his arm.

"Wow, it's pretty big isn't it..."

While everyone's getting ready, Guicho will manifest both Force Screen (+4 Shield bonus) and Offensive Precognition (+1 Insight to attack rolls), both would have a two minute duration. If possible, he'll also get a bit closer to the noise (up to Sandstrider)

Initiative: [roll0]

Guicho

It even looks somewhat peaceful, probably isn't even carnivorous with that tiny maw... The blast of flames around the beast comes off as a unexpected, this was dwarfed by the surprise that came with the monster looking in his direction and charging. The thing was simply too big and its roars of rage and burnt flesh didn't exactly help matters. He jumps to the side along with Chyron and Anthony, self preservation taking over. He knew he couldn't hope for much though, he simply braced himself.

Reflex [roll0] (come on 20...)

"GAAHHHH!" Lost in the cloud of dust Guicho slowly tries to scrape himself off the ground. It could've been worse, it could have easily crushed his skull underneath its foot afterall. Couching up dirt he tries to ignore the sharp, constant pain that came from his legs.

And so begins the fight with the Evil Triceratops.

Drath Since drath decides to run away, the triceratops gets an attack of opportunity on him.

[roll0]
[roll1]

Drath still makes it to the horse and takes off into the woods. Normally I would need a ride check but a horse requires little in the ways of getting it to run away.

Aleash Even I had to look up Micale's name. The dinosaur does not come within range. Since it would take you through the dinosaur's threat range, I am assuming you stay put.

Shauni the wand activates and the spell tracks and damages the beast but it seems unfased.

It gives chase after the Wizard. Even at this point, it is CLEARLY obvious the wizard will outrun triceratops without a problem.

The Triceratops is now at least 40 feet from all of you. The wizard is at least 70 feet from you. (move action to get on the horse, one move away)

Katasi, do you still charge and attack?

Dark "Bah, the wizard will be back but I no longer think staying put is a good idea, the report about the ruins had nothing about Dinosaurs. We might be safer there..." (have you ever imagined if talking took no time at all in real life?) Dark hops onto his horse, "I will go after the arcane wielder of doom."
He looks at anthony who gives him a nod. Dark is 50 feet away.

in addendum

A friend from rl will be taking over Vera (one of the inquisitors) shortly. I hope that no one minds. This is mostly so that I have one npc less to worry about.

Chyron and Anthony both stand up from their diving away from the Triceratops.

ok, so Drath is going to ride his horse to the point that he can no longer see the dino, and he will go even if the horse dies at full speed. Then he is going to cautiously get back to the camp. The minute he sees a dino though he's driving his horse towards death again.

if the horse does die, he will use the spell "mount" as long as the dino isnt nearby but if it is, he will try to climb a tree ("nearby" is within 50ft)

Have you had a lot of horses die on you? That is hard to do... Either way, if no one pursues the dino... Then the fight is over.

It takes about a minute to get away from the dino (ten rounds of you doing 600 ft per round, dino doing about 240 feet per round)

I need a survival check from drath.

It takes him a few seconds to get moving, his step a bit slower, but in the end he decides to simply call Bones over from wherever it ran off to.

Drath: You manage not to get lost after the dinosaur has lost its steam. It takes you some time to avoid the large beast. Dire shows up on his horse but just nods to you and travels next to you back to the camp.

As you travel through the rest of the day, nothing happens till you get within a mile of the ruins. The sun has gone down at this point. As you approached the ruins, the sound of the hoofsteps change to that of walking on stone. As you look down at your feet, you are walking on a stone road.

In the light of the twilight, the illusion slowly begins to disapate and buildings start to appear where trees once stood. In the last droplets of sunlight, you come to realize you are standing in what must have been a sprawling metropolis. As for the fireball thing, you don't find any doors that are both recognizable and in one piece. You also don't find any buildings that have a roof.

As you are looking for a door you see aleash walking towards you.

Assuming that the party puts up watches, the night passes slowly. With each watch, the same thing happens.

Strange noises issue from the jungle all through the night. Whoever is awake sees dark things moving through the woods, if someone checks it out you find nothing.

Those that are asleep have rather lucid dreams. You are each walking through the a beautiful elven city with a loved one (if none then the person disturbingly has no face). The whole city is made of gorgeous white marble. With blues, purples and golds accenting the soft curves of the buildings. Arcane magic seems so commonplace that children run by, chasing a ball of raw magic, one of them catches it and absorbs it. After doing so he points skyward and conjurs a beautiful fireworks display. After watching the display, you and the person with you continue on through the city. Someone shouts at random and points skyward. As you follow their pointing, you see a large meteor flying at the city. The dream changes and you are wondering around the city, now bathed in flames, searching for the loved one. You see a body that might be them, as you rush towards them, just before you can tell wether or not it is them, you wake up, bathed in sweat and the morning light.

RAILROADING TO FURTHER THE CAMPAIGN

After the fruit is gathered and the horses taken care of, I assume you tackle the door. It takes about 10 minutes for you to stumble around in the darkness, find the door, and move the door. You are greeted by a dark set of stairs going down. Although some time has past, this is all to familiar. As you trek down into the bowels of the earth, past the long bridge to the room with the Door of Ultimate Treasure and the Hall of Blindness. The party is mostly quiet, even the normally chatty ones are quiet till you come to where the hallways split. One leads down to Him and where the spiders were, the other leads down to where you found the elves.

"This is where we part ways." The priests pull off packs and withdraw a multitude of weapons. Anthony pulls Vera aside for a moment. Afterwards, the priests put on pairs of white goggles and extinguish their torches and dissappear into the darkness of the tunnel beyond. Vera stays behind with the group.

The main difference is that on either side of the bridge are two curious looking towers that are hanging down from the ceiling of rock.

Something loud and in a language beyond you is shouted out. You didn't catch what was said but you get the general gist of "stop or I send several pointy objects your way." Mikale steps forward and begins speaking to them. They walk away and you follow not knowing at all what is being said. Any questions asked by the party are either dismissed or answered by Mikale in short curt answers, rather rudely. You are taken across the bridge to a short cave that empties into a MUCH MUCH larger cave that the City of Arcturians is built in all its splendid glory. You have seen such a city but instead of beauty it was a nightmare from the night before. The diplomats meet inside the city and you are greeted everywhere you look by glowing elves. They refer to you rakona or rakonas as a group. Mikale explains later that this means "Unlit or Dark Ones." All is going fairly smoothly until not soon after the diplomats have met, a large roar issues from deep within the caverns that you have just come from. A whisper issues forth from the elves, "him." The ground begins to shake like a dog coming in out of the rain.

Game on

As the earthquake subsides, most of the elves begin to talk nervously amongst themselves. The ambassador who has been speaking to Mikale quietly in undercommon. Although you can not hear what he is saying, the tension is etched on his face. After a moment Mikale turns to the rest of the group.
Come, we are to be shown in to see their mayor immediately.

The group is ushered with a bit of haste into on of the larger buildings of the underground city, and shown into a darkly beautiful room. The walls appear to be carved from the natural stone. The ebony walls sparkle with thousands of jewels of every color, In the center of the room, a group of 6 older elves are standing around a table all speaking in undercommon heatedly. Their attention is focused on a much younger elf who sits at the head of the table. When the young elf spots the party, he angrily orders the rest out. He then sits down in his chair and visibly unwinds for a moment.

He then speaks to the group in common.
Thank you for coming; I am Asavail, the mayor of the Arcturians. Our city, and indeed the world stand in great peril. Many generations ago, the races of the world banded together to fight a great evil that was known simply as The One. Through our combined might, the evil was sealed in a prison deep within the earth. As a key to the prison, a stone known as the sage stone was infused with the power of 100 mages. This city was built to guard the key, in this task we have failed and if we do not act soon, the evil will once again be released.

Asavail will pause for a moment to let this sink in. In the pause he will summon a servant to bring stone goblets for everyone. The goblets are filled with the clearest cleanest water that anyone has ever drunk.

He continues sadly.
It was during the period of morning my father’s death and my transition to power. A thief was able to make his way into our city and steal the sage stone. I see your arrival at this time as a gift of the gods. We know that the thief was an agent of the necromancer Landryn Teriak who lives to the north in the kingdom of Denagoth. Unfortunately, we are unable to follow the thief. Our time living under the ground has made us un-suitable for a journey overland. I ask that you 5 brave souls venture to recover this lost key. I fear that if you do not, Teriak will be able to use the key to remove the wards on the prison, and The One will once again be set free to ravage the land.

Essentially what they are saying in undercommon.
“You must do something”
“This wouldn’t have happened under your father.
That sort of stuff

I am still hoping that TBO shows up, otherwise I will have to tone down some of the stuff.

He takes a step back, but as he begins to motion for the next one, he spots the small badge he's been given back home. A family heirloom, they'd told him. Now he couldn't help but feel it looking at him disdainfully. A gift from the gods huh? He takes his spot again, resolve seemed to have crept up on him.

The Sage stone was stolen 3 months ago. Since that time, the rumplings and earthquakes have been growing stronger. I believe that if this is not completed before the first snows fall in the outside world, none of us will be around to see another snowfall.

Vera shifts uneasily, Considering the gravity of this mission, are you sure you want to rest it in our hands? The danger of the stone is two fold. The first is that it acts as a key to imprison The One. The second is the power that is contained in the stone itself. If Teriak is unable to learn how to use the stone, he will grow in power almost enough to match the One. The one benefit that we have, is that he can not study it for more than a short period of time. If you are in direct contact with the stone for more than 3 hours, your soul will be sucked in along with the rest of the sages.

I have considered alerting your king so that he can assemble great armies to attack Teriak. But this would be futile. As soon as he spotted the armies, he would go into hiding. As long as he stays in his keep in Denagoth we can locate him. Our only hope is a small band to move in swiftly and quietly. Some in this party have proven themselves to be brave and trustworthy to my people. I have great confidence in sending you to perform this task.

Will you accept this charge?

The Mayor continues to look at the rest of the party. After a few moments of continued silence, he assumes their acceptance of the task.

I thank you brave souls for accepting this task. It will not be easy, Teriak is held in high regard in Denagroth. You may avail of our stores to stock your provisions. I would suggest you leave within two days.

Gods speed to you all
