The old man leans back in his chair as he finishes his long tail and looks around the table examining each reaction in turn. "Will you take this quest that I have asked of you?" He looks to the door as the wind begins to pick up outside. He clears his throat and continues "will you find out what happened to Joseph?"

Jason

Jason Dral had sat patiently while listening to the old man's story. Compared to the orc, who had just introduced himself as Crog, Jason is tiny. He could just about make himself six foot tall if he stood on his tiptoes, but normally he is an inch or two off. While still full of youth compared to the man speaking, in a few months time Jason would be celebrating his 30th birthday, if he had many friends with which to celebrate with.

While listening to the tale he had been sitting with his left leg folded under the other on his seat, and his left elbow resting on the table. The hand connected to this arm is covered in a metallic gauntlet, made of the same shiny blue material his chain-link shirt is made of. This hand was gently stroking the stubley black beard which sprouted from Jason's face, doing so in a way to avoid harming himself with the spikes protruding from the glove. His piercing blue eyes had been staring at the old man as he spoke, but now they scanned around the table, trying to gauge the others reactions. It would be impossible for any other than himself to tell that his eyes are blue however, as each was hiding behind a dark purple lens of a set of goggles.

As if coming to a conclusion, Jason leaned back in his chair. It was quite clear to see how thin he was when he did this, it would be best to describe him as lithe. With his armoured hand he gently adjusted the wide brimmed brown leather hat which perched upon his head, and using the other hand to brush his shoulder length black hair out of his face, Jason spoke in a clear and friendly voice. "I too will help you" he says.

Aleash

Sitting half in shadows, Aleash listens as the old man spins his tale. He is not an overly large man. It is hard to tell if his black hair looks ruffled because of a desire for it to look that way, or if he had just forgotten. One could easily have passed him over as a townsman, if not for the wooden symbol of Heironeous hanging from his neck of a hint of chain mail, and the greatsword that rests by his side.

His mind is filled with the riches that can be found in caves before his training takes over. Sure, I will take this quest. Do you think we can talk to this Professor Jenny.

How about if we do our rolls here?
[roll0] on the old man

here is the primer on the dice roller if anyone needs it
http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27768&highlight=dice+roller
the key thing, is you can not do rolls in an edit. Also, you can edit a post that has rolls in it, just don't touch the rolls themselves. I think the dice roller thread has a little more protection, as to deleting posts and such.

((the old man is not hiding anything))
"I don't see why not but that is not up to me..." He points up at the ceiling, "you'll have to talk to the captain of the town guard, he is up there now trying to make some sense of the ramblings she is spitting out." He clears his throat again. "Something about darkness coming to get her. I guess she was attacked at night." He holds his hand up and gestures to the waitress.

The waitress comes over offers everyone a menu.

On the menu
Mosquito- 1cp – on tap beer, not very good
Grasshopper- 2sp – a nice blend with a minty aftertaste
Morning Dew- 110gp/bottle – Elven Wine
The Hornet- A loaf of bread with honey baked in- 1sp
Flyguts- gruel- 1cp
Bee’s Nest- Bigger loaf of honeybread with grapes able to feed 6 people - 4gp
Last Weeks Web- room for the night bare minimum – 1sp/night
Today’s Web- next step up, a little nicer – 1 gp/night
Web with a View- very nice room recover - 10gp/night
No other services provided here

The old man orders a Mosquito. "Oh, lass, these fine gentlemen," he waives a hand at the group, "would like to have a word with the professor." The waitress will take any orders before leaving again.

After looking at the menu for a litte while, Jason decides he is actually quite hungry, and a drink can never hurt. "Hmm.... I think I'll have a Hornet and a bowl of Flyguts please, and a Grasshopper to top it all off." He hands over five silver pieces, "and you can keep the change"

Shauni

The fairly tall young woman with striking red hair nodded to herself, as she fiddled with one of the buckles on her greatcoat. Her blue eyes darted quickly around the room, as if it hurt to stare at one thing too long. As she shifts nervously away from the boisterous orc, the soft shink of light chainmail can be heard. She blurts out loudly, "Why the hell not? I've had nuthin' better offered." Glancing over the menu she says, "Ooh, a bug theme, eh? I've always liked bugs. Gimmee...the Bee's Nest and 3 Grasshoppers! I haven't eaten all day. Here," dropping 7 gold pieces on the table. "Sorry, I didn't count it out. Counting bugs me. Get it? Bugs?" Her eyes go wide and she grins as she waits for the inevitable groans from her horrible pun.

Sandstrider sits quietly for a few moments, his huge bulk nearly straining the chair to it's limit. He looks over to the man with the ruffled hair in the corner. "I will go and attempt to help find out what happened. But I agree with this man here. I believe it would be a good idea to talk to the Professor." He looks at the menu briefly. "No thank you, I'm not hungry." Is his reply.

The young man who had also listened to the tale took a while to answer. His attention had been on the speaker until the scream came from upstairs. Now he tried to listen to both at the same time but ended up giving an inattentive impression.

His hair was black, dirty and unkempt, a black string held it in place to the back of his head. Tiny cuts adorned the left side of his face, as if he had fallen face first into a thorny bush and a thin vertical scar seemed to emerge from the top of his head and stop about a inch before reaching his eyebrows, traveling through the middle of his forehead. His breeches looked to have been covered in dust a few hours ago, his shirt had cuts around the edges, his boots needed polishing and his chain shirt, along with the rapier strapped to his belt had lost much of their luster. overall, he gave the impression of a man who had been through a lot in only a few days.

The man eyes the menu with a soft smile. It can't be worse then the real thing, a decent bed would be nice too... He signals to the waitress. "I'll take a Mosquito, a serving of Flyguts and a Hornet, if you would be so kind. Also I'd like to reserve Last Weeks Web for tonight under the name Guicho Milita." Once his order is taken, Guicho turns back to the old man. "I don't have much going for me at the moment, but I think I need to get away from the sea for a while. I'll try my best to find your grandson, a talk with the professor, or at least an attempt to wouldn't hurt though."

Jason winced a little at the orc's booming speech, already wishing that he could grasp the concept of noise control. He considered telling the orc that he had put far too much money down for only three pints of the strongest beer the menu had to offer, but thought against it, a numeracy lesson was not something which Jason wanted to give. "Well then, if from the looks of it everyone is going upstairs to have a little chat with this professor, then I'll have to join you".

The waitress takes your money and provides Crog his change. She brings you your food and heads up the stairs. A burly man with black hair and a black beard dressed in half plate with no helmet, a longsword in his belt and a large steel shield strapped to his back. He has an orange cloak on with the Symbol of the Empire on it. He pulls over a chair from an empty table and spins it around and sits on it backwards, facing you. "Lucinda told me you wanted to see the former Professor?" He pulls off his gloves and sets them on the table. "My name is Kyle. No, you cannot see her. We are waiting on escort from the mainland to come pick her up. And I am under strict orders that she is to be left alone to rest. Not to mention that she is quite crazy. You'd get no more then we did." He goes on as if reciting something from memory. "The darkness is out to get you. It is the dark that is evil... So forth and so on..." Lucinda comes back down the stairs with a guard dressed simarly to the Kyle. The captain and Kyle silently exchange nods. "Well maybe she has calmed down, but only one of you can ask any questions. Best you decide who before you come up. I will make a moment of time to be available to you for questions afterward." The guard nods to the old man, "Have a good night, Manny." The old man nods back. "You too, Kyle." The old man looks to the rest of you. "Thank you for hearing my plight. I will pray for your safe return. I can usually be found here if you have any questions for me." With that he goes and finds a stool up at the bar.

Ignoring the change I drink the first in a couple gulps. If its alcool percentage was 50% or lower I spit it out and shout, "THIS NOT STRONG, THIS FOR WIMPS!" and spill the rest on the floor. If its higher than 50% then I slowly drink the rest while trying to lead everyone else in the bar in some drinking songs.

"Well, I don't mind telling you all, but I have very little social skills when it comes to something like this. It would be a wise idea not to let me do the talking." With this he takes a gulp of his beer, sighing appreciatively at its minty taste, and starts to eat his food, ready to follow the others when they decide to head upstairs.

Guicho

After a weeks worth of travel with little besides water, Guicho savors every spoonful of the sloppy, possibly watered down stew. “I’m gonna assume that meant you’d rather not meet Jenny either. I'm kinda curious myself, I'll gladly do it…” He turns to the man proud to show his faith in Heironeous and the large blade. “unless you’d prefer to talk to her, yourself Sir, eh...” He scratches the back of his head, trying to remember if the man’s name had come up. He takes a bite of the hornet to make some time, feeling rather awkward.

Once the comment is forgotten, or answered, he turns to the guard. “Anyway, Kyle was it, do you have any leads so far, or is it the kind of stuff we’re better of not knowing“ At any rate, it would explain her immediate departure. He continues with his meal, slowly but surely, as he awaits an answer.

Aleash

Responding to Guicho
I am willing to handle the...questioning for lack of a better word. I believe only 2 or 3 of us should proceed upstairs. Myself, perhaps you Guicho. He takes a look at the rest of the volunteers.Maybe just the 2 of us. We wouldn't want to shock her any more than she already is.

Aleash will then turn to the guard.
This gentleman and myself will proceed up to talk to the professor if we may. Lead on if you would.

As they proceed upstairs, Aleash will do his best to try and straighten his hair and make himself look pleasant. Once in the room, he will leave his sword and crossbow just inside the doorway, trying to keep them as unobtrusive as possible. He will make his holy symbol as obvious as possible.

I am going to stop at this point, before any real questioning to allow others to give their input.

Not trying to be bossy, well, maybe it is a paladins nature to be a little bossy. If anyone else wants to go upstairs and be the "face" that is fine with me. I am just thinking that most of us described our characters as disheveled. As for Sandstrider, well I don't think a half giant walking in would calm her.

btw, can we either change the recruiting post to on ooc thread, or start one in the ooc section. It would be nice for us to have a section where we can talk about this stuff.

((OOC Thread is here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3317524#post3317524) please take a moment to read it.))

Along the walls of the stairs you see a battle scene of warriors of light battling what looks like a cloud of darkness. It is intricate down to symbol of Heironeous on the paladin. This could be any number of tales of the great deeds done the God of Valor's name. It looks recently painted. ((sorry, I really like random fluff))

Aleash

Aleash feels a sense of pride and confidence as he scans the mural going up the stairway.

He enters the room (doing all the stuff I said before) and approaches the professor. He tries to talk in a calm comforting voice.
Hello Professor Jenny, I am Aleash; May Heironeous grant his blessing on all of us. I have been told that I may talk with you for a while would that be ok?
Assuming an affirmative answer
Can you give me an idea of what happened to you. You do not need to go into any great detail. As we talk we can explore the details of what happend, I would just like a general idea for now.

As Aleash asks the questions, he is trying to judge how the professor is reacting. If at any point she seems like she is going to freak out, he will change the subject and talk about what a lovely day it is. Also, depending on the room, he will ask for more light. We want it to be pretty bright in the room.

Not sure if you want any kind of checks on that. I am +10 for diplomacy. Does the woman look like she needs any healing. I am at +8 for heal or can heal 4 hp using lay on hands.

The guard at the door takes note of you gets a good look at you before letting you into the room without a problem. The room is simple, a separate wash room with no door, a queen size bed with the headboard up against the outside wall and a window just above that. The woman tied to the bed is the only thing out of place. There is a lantern in the corner providing light.

At first glance, you have trouble understanding that the madwoman in front of you was ever a professor. The clothes she is in are very likely the clothes she had on when she was attacked. They are covered in blood but you see no wounds on her. While she is tied loosely to a bed, you get the idea it may not be a good idea to get close. Her eyes are wide with fear. Or is it anger? You are having trouble telling.

"DARKNESS CAME. TOOK JOSEPH. LEFT MICHAEL. LEFT ME" At this point she bursts into tears. She snaps out of it almost instantly and continues her rant. "THEN CAME THE COLD! EVERYWHERE DARK AND COLD" At this point her eyes go very wide. "BEWARE" She drops to bed and passes out in an instant.

The guard, who followed you into the room quietly states, "She came into town alone." He looks very depressed as he goes on, "Michael still hasn't returned either."

Aleash will turn to the guard, and gesture that they should exit the room. He takes up his weapons as he leaves the room, slinging his sheathed greatsword over his left shoulder.
So, has this been her general pattern since she returned? What more do you know about the expedition? Do you know anything about Joseph and Michael?

He will then proceed downstairs, making eye contact with all that expressed interest in the quest, he will gesture that they should gather together so that he can repeat what happened upstairs.

hopefully this is the end of me hogging the story

Several people have suddenly finished their meals from around the inn and walking quite nervously and quickly to the door. The woman behind the bar watches them leave, says nothing, but seems none to pleased about the sudden fire alarm drill that everyone seems to be pulling. Even Manny, the old man, has left. However, even if he was not in the same room, there was no way he could not have heard the shouts. His body shuddered quite visibly, despite his best attempts to keep the fear under control, and his shaking hand spilled a little of the gruel onto the table.

"Well, I've got to say, that didn't sound all too good. Makes me quite glad I didn't follow you up..." Following the lead that everyone else seems to have taken, Jason decides that a room for the night would be more comfortable than sleeping on the floor. "You still have rooms available? Then she flicks her wings and waves her antennae to catch the scents from downstairs. Then she snaps back to reality out of her inscrutable dreamworld, shuddering slightly. Shaking of this unnerving sensation, she walks down the stairs and notices the others. "Good Morning!" she says in flawless Abyssal, "How were your nights?" Crog

I get up in a cheery mood, go talk to some random farmer (probably scarring him because I'm a friggin Orc). Then if there is a nearby forest, I go there kill a deer, and eat it while bathing in its blood. I then return to the tavern without explaining what I was doing to ANYONE.
If there isn't a forest or when I get back, I follow the half-giant around after buying 10 rations.

A good night’s sleep on a decent bed was all Guicho needed. Before leaving, he does what he can to fix his appearance. Seeing some of the others gathering information, he decides to gather some supplies. The trip didn’t sound like it would be easy, it would probably be best to be prepared. By the time he returns to the tavern, a good chunk of his last payment has left his person. Now just to think of a name and wait for the others, as long as the weather looks good that is.

Supplies Gathered
Light Warhorse – 150gp
Riding Saddle – 10gp
Bits and Bridle - 2gp
Rations x 5 – 2.5gp
Saddlebags – 4gp
Sunrods x 4 – 7.2gp (Discount on Alchemical items)

These should still be within my budget, I had a good bit left over after trying to remain at a light load with 10vstr. These supplies will remain with the horse, if anything would be too difficult to find, I’ll gladly change it.

Crog, you find a forest nearby and... Do your thing.

Sandstrider and Jason- The men in the main room seemed to be mottled assortment of emotions. Most of them are grumpy, some are happy. But all of them are tense. All of them are worried about the storm. It is going to be bad. This is what you get from the gather information check and speaking to the right lumberjack. "Some morons wanted some peace and some quiet so they goes out some and starts diggin some. They hits some stone and call some professor. I'da called some digger. Aparently this stone had some rune on it, made'em all in some tissy. So then we gets the call to come down and do some choppin. You go straight east to some big rock, bigger then me. Head south some to a bald hill, no grass, no trees. Head east from there to some clearing with some felled trees in it and youre there. If you come to a stream, you have gone somewhere further."

Aleesh- While you get the guard in good favor and he asks you to join their card game this weekend or when you get back, you learn then further then east.

Guicho- You have no trouble getting any supplies on your list.

Shauni- You get a few curious stares, but nothing more from the lumberjacks.

Aleash is at first upset that he is unable to get more information about the location of the ruins. When he rejoins the others and finds that they have been more successful then himself, he is cheered.
Now my large friend, we decide whether we ride out this oncoming storm here, or try and see how far we can make it towards these ruins before the storm hits. I believe mounted I should be able to make the ruins today. I will be at quite a disadvantage if the weather hits while we are exposed ,unless I can locate a tent though.

Having overheard the exchange between Sandstrider, Jason, and the lumberjacks, Shauni interjects"I think we should wait out the storm. If it's that bad, we shouldn't be walking across open ground. I may be good, but I can't keep us from getting fried by lightning. Besides, if we were mounted we'd be even taller targets in the storm." Shauni then remembers that she will need food for the journey as well. "I still have to pick up some more supplies, too," she says as she pats her magical backpack.

Jason tries his hardest to remember the directions the lumberjack gave him, wishing that he had some paper to write it down on. He pats his pockets for some while the others talk, before voicing his opinion. "I have enough food for a few days, and I'll be fine to sleep out in the wild... But I don't have a horse at all, and I have very little money, nowhere near enough to buy one.. So I'm in a wee bitty bit of a mess, unless there's some other way anyone can think of."

Sandstrider nods softly. I have enough food to last me for 4 days, or to last two of us for 2 days. I'm also without a horse, and I doubt a horse could carry me anyway. He says, digging into his pockets. "I also seem to be to low on gold to buy a horse if I wanted to.but tell you what, I'll chip in for some pack mules and pack saddles for them and some feed for our animals, and some more food for ourselves if that sounds good to anyone else, I want to get there soon, but this way we will be able to go as slow as we need, and we'll be able to hold out longer once we get there."

If everyone agrees to this he will buy 2 donkeys or mules, preferring mules but taking whatever is available.
Donkeys/Mules: 16 gp
2 Pack Saddles: 10 gp
15 feedings worth of feed: 7 sp 5 cp
15 days worth of trail rations (for one person, less if split among the party):7 gp 5 sp
1 tent: 10 gp

For a total of 44 gp, 2 sp and 5 cp. If all of this is availible, if not I'll have to decide then what he does.

He pauses for a sec, Dunno what the horse would eat though, poor things gonna end up nothing but skin and bones with me... dammit, it's so much easier just letting someone else worry about supplies., something dawning to him. "I do have a a good bit of gold left from my last job though, some 10, maybe 9 platinum coins. Perhaps we could find a good use for it, we're gonna be risking our minds together anyway. Maybe a wagon or something so we can all move at a horses speed."

271 gp left after character creation
175.7 were just spent
10.7 spent on things I forgot, including

"We don't know what we will find there, we don't even know how large the ruins are. If we go inside we could be in there for days or even weeks. We risk the possibility of getting lost as well if the ruins are large enough. I think we need to maximize our supplies as best we can, and also our means or carrying those supplies with us while inside." He puts rubs his chin with his hand for a second before continuing. "I have a suggestion to make. We could buy a cart and have some donkeys to pull it. Those of us who have horses and are good on them can scout ahead and get a general feel of the area. The rest of use who don't have horses or are poor riders could stay with the cart to protect the supplies. After scouting ahead, Aleash returns to the group
I have found the large rock that marks our first way point. There is enough timber there to build a crude structure to provide shelter from the elements. I believe you should be able to reach it before full dark if you push on. There is a closer location, with existing shelter, but no fresh water nearby. Of course, if this rain gets smaller, I should be able to capture it to replenish out supplies.

Aleash will dismount lucky and walk beside him for 10 minutes or so, as the group determines which stopping point they would like to make for.

He starts moving, drawing his rapier and leaving himself open, trying to draw the elemental’s attention. “Just try and get me if you think you’re so fast!” Questioning how effective his blade would be against a mass of air, Guicho runs around it before plunging it into its airy mass. "What's wrong with being an autonomous collective? I'm sticking with letting however can lead raise to the occasion, it would seem much more proper then basing it on two nights experience with each other." Wanting to change the subject after the first day's passionate exchange, Guicho takes a look at the sky before continuing.

"Anyway, the professor supposedly went insane at the ruins, if we continue on we'd probably reach them deep into the night. I agree with Guicho. We are entering into a location where we know there is danger in darkness. We will be better off getting a good nights rest, if we can, before entering into the ruins.

thats fine, I don't know if anyone noticed but thats all I have been doing anyway.

That nights dreams are the same exact dream, there is nothing different that you notice. The morning is clear and sunny. From where you stand, you can see two teepee like tents, a dead and scattered fire, a set of stairs leading down into the ground and a large globe of darkness ((no real need for spellcraft, anyone who has ANY ranks in spellcraft recognizes it for the spell.))

The crossing of the bridge, despite the precariousness of it, is uneventful. You get to the other side with little difficulty. The landing on the otherside is worked marble. Etched into either side of the entrance back into the rock wall is two limestone statues of women with pendants (kno religion).

As you proceed deeper into the room. You have entered a square 30 by 30 foot room with for exits. The marbled floors and walls have gold etched into them and provide enough light to see.

There is ten foot hallway off to the left. A steel door with holes in it ((that you can't see through)). And a stairway leading further underground off to the left. Back the way you came is the forth exit.
