This is the 20th edition of the Order of the Stick Trivia thread. I think I am supposed to put some sort of joke here, but unfortunately I must have rolled a one on humour.

Here are the rules:

The first player to answer a question correctly, asks the next one.
If that player doesn't have a question immediately in mind, then state "Open Question" ("OQ") and let someone else ask.
Questions have to have an answer that is demonstrated by at least one, and no more than three, canon online strip. (No bonus material either online or in the books)
No counting questions with more than 3 parts. For example: how many times has Roy said "the".
If the answer given is not the answer expected, but still technically answers the question, allow it. You can rephrase and ask your question again later.
There's a difference between rephrasing—finding a different, more precise way to word the question so it has a smaller number of possible answers—and just simply rewriting to rule out the last answer. Don't do the latter. (If you are unsure, just ask it.)
If an answer is given that in no way is correct, then players can call attention to the fact. At that point, there may be 2 questions occurring at the same time. The 1st question that was incorrectly answered is the valid question. The second question may be answered, but for no prize (aka asking the next question).
If your response is ninja'd, that is if someone beats you with the correct answer, please edit your post stating, "ninja'd, please answer above question".
After 24 hours without an answer, please provide a hint. After an additional 24 hours pass, please provide the answer and take pride that you have stumped us all. If you won't be around to provide a hint (hiking Mt. Everest, other activity without internet, rot-13 (https://www.rot13.com/) is a good way to hide your hint so you can post it in advance.)
Recognize that this is a game. It is supposed to be quick and fun. If a question seems to go beyond the rules, assume that the author is not familiar with the rules, and point them out. If the author affirms that the question is allowable within the rules, then continue with the game. If the question turns out to be not allowable, it becomes an open question. Groan and move on.
Questions along the lines of "when was the first time X happened/was mentioned" are not allowed because to prove that they never happened before, one would have to link to every strip before it, which is unreasonable and would break the no-more-than-three-strips rule. They are permitted if the answer is in the first three strips, however.

Last Question of the previous thread was:

Find a lit torch, other than the ones in the bandit camp.

Cicciograna
2019-06-30, 09:59 PM
Cicciograna's question timed out. You have us defeated. I don't even know where to look, because apart from the "ATON" thing, Teevo's speech is the only case where I remember words being written in different colored letters. I would like to know the answer now.

Find me a word that contains an 'A' written in a different color from the rest of the word.

'A' as in the actual vowel.

Regular, Premium or Supreme, pick your poison. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0687.html)

Hint (a bit early, so wait an hour before you open this box).
Belkar sets a tent on fire with a torch in the bandit camp (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0157.html), and sets Miko on fire with a matchstick (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0270.html). What does Belkar set on fire that causes more damage to the Order than those?

Is that (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0241.html) really a torch, though? It looks more to me like a lighting stick or a punk.

If correct, let's go with:

Find a line standing on a pillow.

Is that (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0241.html) really a torch, though? It looks more to me like a lighting stick or a punk. I thought it was a torch. Sorry if this was confusing. Maybe in retrospect, I shouldn't have asked about the torch. Instead I could have pointed out that in #46 seventh panel, Haley tells Roy to "grow a Sense Motive", and asked for a proof that Roy did. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0046.html) Oh well.

What is possibly an annis? Hmm, I think that was one of those D&D jokes like “Roy's been staggered! Or possibly stunned! Maybe dazed? Dazzled?” (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1069.html) or ghouls vs ghasts (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0107.html) or demon vs devil (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0062.html).

Who is too late for a reference?

Arguably, Ian Starshine (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0746.html). Kind of a dated reference, so its much too late for that.

Also the goblin that Xykon was going to give a college recommendation to. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0112.html)

I have my doubts, but between me and jonas we've found several instances which arguably work? I just want to get this question in, and there's a compelling case for the first of my answers and for jonas's.

Find me someone dead while two people are visibly watching...
The dead person hasn't fallen down...
And their entire body is showing, but only one eye.

Neither of the answers really fits...
Belkar was late for a joke, not a reference. In Ian's case, it's the reference itself that is late, not a someone. The goblin wasn't late, he just screwed up...

Hint:
The individual in question is definitely too young to understand said reference

Hint: The individual in question is definitely too young to understand said reference Oh! So someone is too young to understand a reference. Now I know what you mean. The giant yellow sockpuppet thing in the gladiator arena. I don't understand that reference either. Now if only I could recall where it is in the Blood book, that would be great. … Oh, I see. Squire already linked to it. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0746.html)

Is he the rookie (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0354.html)? Oh, the centipede video game! Yes, that's a better answer. Although that one has modern adaptations, so it's not too dated for me, but I can understand that the young policeman isn't familiar with it.

To be honest, I'm just shooting in the dark. I seem to remember that there's a very specific character that explicitly says "Am I too late for a reference?", but for the love of the Dark One I cannot remember who or when!

Find me a reference to an Italian city. Um. Isn't the whole thing about a colosseum where gladiators fight, also: bread! circuses! (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0741.html) and Tarquin (who is named of a Roman king) gives thumb up (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0778.html) a big reference to ancient Rome? Either that, or it's something to do with how Yokyok is a reference to Princess Bride.

Nope, it's an explicitly named Italian city.

Huh, I probably have a vampire in my brain right now, it's probably the first time I realize the connection between Tarquin, the Coliseum and all the roman imagery. I feel so dumb now.

For a hint, the bat is not the only animal at the table. Multiple animals at a table? I know of the tea party in #232 of the animals from Roy's bag (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0232.html), the table with the priests representing the twelve gods in the godsmoot, including a ratfolk priest (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0999.html), but not much more. The bat could be a vampire in their alternate form, but I don't recall vampires sitting at a table often. Gontor as a vampire stands on a desk (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1014.html), but he's not in the form of a bat. So we've got two; just need one more.

Bonus points if you can find 6 people sticking their tongue out, either in disgust or while taunting. (Yes, this will require more than the maximum of three strips per the forum rules. That's why it's for "bonus points")

Dangit, why couldn't they have made the show longer and packed in more of the book?

There was just too much book in the book (and already a lot of narration in the show).

Though it is odd how they inculded some jokes only in half, in Famine's fast food for example.

Depends, is it new?

Wouldn't be a problem if British shows weren't so short. There's a line in The Good Place I'm sure to misquote, it's a British character saying something like, "Dierdre and Margaret, it's my favorite show, how do you not know it?!? It's been on the air for thirty years, they made nearly a dozen episodes!"

You got to the point of the quote (including the name and the numbers).

That line is criminally underappreciated, I say based entirely on my inability to find any gif of it. Seriously, though, it might be my favorite joke in the series (and that's no small feat).

It is a very funny line, and I have no clue what mine is, but that’s cause it’s a masterpiece of comedy and storytelling.

Decimal money is so much easier. There are five pennies to a nickel, two nickels to a dime, two and a half dimes to a quarter, four quarters to a silver dollar, one silver dollar to a dollar note.

(I'm more familiar with Hungarian forint coins of course. Two small yellow coins to a large white coin with the coat of arms and smooth perimeter, two large white coat of arms coins to a large yellow coin, two and a half large yellow coins for a large white coin with the predator bird and dashedly ridged perimeter, two predator bird coins to the medium sized thick egg colored coin, two egg coins to the large anti-egg colored coin, two and a half anti-eggs to the red banknote (that used to be reddish brown) with Rákóczi, two red banknotes to the blue banknote with Mátyás, two blue banknotes to the dark brown banknote with Bethlen, two and half dark brown banknotes to the yellow banknote with Széchenyi (that used to be light brown), two yellow banknotes to the pink banknote (which can also be bluish grey, both are still in circulation) with István, two pink banknotes to the rainbow banknote with Deák (which used to be reddish grey). So simple, even a child can learn it.)

Or, and hear me out, 100 cents of an Euro to one Euro. Two one-Euro coins to a two-Euro coin. Five one-Euro coins to a five-Euro bill. Two five-Euro bills to a ten-euro bills. Two ten-Euro bills to a twenty-Euro bill. Five ten-Euro bills to a fifty-Euro bill. Two fifty-Euro bills to a one-hundred-Euro bill. And five one-hundred-Euro bills to a five-hundred-Euro bill.

I know it’s complicated but I’m sure you Brits could pull it off given time and a portable calculator.

Honestly that sounds only a bit simpler than the American system, our main complexity is a handful of coins that are 1, 5, 10 and 25 cents (no one uses half or silver dollars and if someone tells you that they are a liar), and dimes and quarters are still fairly useful and easy to differ out them in relation to a dollar (screw pennies and nickels).

And 100s, they also come in hundreds, about as complex as the euro in that department.

The Euro is cheating because it's new. It has nice recognizable coins and banknotes because it's new so it doesn't have to be compatible with the previous generation of coins and banknotes. The forint is hard to use the way it is because of backwards compatibility. We used to have nice recognizable coins: the 1 forint and the 2 forint coins had unique small sizes so they were easy to recognize. We don't use them anymore because of inflation, but new coins aren't that small because it would be strange to have the largest valued coins with such a small size, and existing coins can't easily change sizes either because they are long-lived, and it was confusing enough when the 100 and 200 forint coins changed size. We used to have nice recognizable banknotes. The most frequently used banknotes were the small-valued ones: the green 200 forint, the red 500 forint, and the blue 1000 forint notes. But because of inflation, the 200 forint banknote is no longer used, and the 500 forint note is getting rare. So we have one recognizable banknote, and a palette of different shades of brown for the rest, each of which already changed color twice to slowly try to navigate them to a more recognizable set. If the bank keeps up the good work, they might eventually get to a usable set of notes with a hundred more years of gradual changes, and a usable set of coins in two hundred years. The designers of the Euro didn't try for anything nice like that: they decided that everyone has to get used to the new cash in just two months.

That said, I do wish we had banknotes with different sizes, like the Euro has. That does make them much more recognizable.

Well it's not part of the metric system, is it? Different challenges mean different solutions. Having just cents "decents" and Euros would be cumbersome as all hell.

What is the use of the random stuff in the imperial system (and I’m an American, I use the imperial system by virtue of it being the one I was raised with), I can only remember what’s in a mile on a good day, barely any day can I remember volume, and Fahrenheit is downright bonkers, the metric system in length is 1:10:100:1000 etc, 1:1000 for mass and volume and 0 is freezing 100 is boiling, units of measurement are only useful in numbers, you have to divide and carry physical things for currency (and coincidentally when you are doing stuff online any denominations are completely removed so it is just how many dollars to the specificity of one hundredth of a dollar).
