Sandpoint
The Swallowtail Festival

Each of you, for your own reasons, have made your way to the town of Sandpoint at the end of Summer, arriving just in time for the Swallowtail Festival that marks the transition from Summer to Autumn. Whether you've been here a week or an hour, you find yourself finding delight in this bright and musical festival that begins at a decent hour of the morning.

The Swallowtail Festival begins promptly, as scheduled, on the first day of autumn. The square before the church quickly becomes crowded as locals and travelers arrive, and several merchant tents featuring food, clothes, local crafts, and souvenirs are there to meet them.

The turnout for the opening speeches is quite respectable, and the four keynote speakers each deliver short but well-received welcomes to the festival. Mayor Deverin’s friendly attitude and excitement prove contagious as she welcomes visitors to town and jokes about how even Larz Rovanky, the local tanner (and notorious workaholic) managed to tear himself away from the tannery to attend, much to everyone’s but Larz’s amusement. Sheriff Hemlock brings the crowd down a bit with his dour mood, his reminder to be safe around the evening’s bonfire, and his request for a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in the fire that claimed the town’s previous church five years ago. Fortunately, Cyrdak Drokkus is more than up to the challenge of bringing the crowd’s mood back up with his rousing anecdotes as he delivers a not-completely-irreverent recap of the long process the town went through to finance and construct the new cathedral. He throws in a bit of self-promotion at the end, as is his wont, inviting everyone to stop by the Sandpoint Theater the following evening to check out his new production of “The Harpy’s Curse,” revealing that the lead role of Avisera the harpy queen will be played by none other than
the famous Magnimarian diva Allishanda! Finally, Father Zantus steps up give a short speech thanking everyone for coming before declaring the Swallowtail Festival underway.

At noon, Father Zantus and his acolytes wheel a large covered wagon into the square, and after recounting the short parable of how Desna first fell to earth and was nursed back to health by a blind child who she transformed into an immortal butterfly as a reward for her aid, they pull aside the wagon’s cover, releasing the thousand children of Desna—a furious storm of a thousand swallowtail butterflies that swarm into the air in a spiraling riot of color to a great cheer from the crowd. Throughout the rest of the day, children futilely chase butterflies, never quite quick enough to catch them.

Lunch is provided free, at the expense of Sandpoint’s taverns. Each brings its best dishes—this event is a marketing push by the taverns as much to win new customers as it is to feed a hungry crowd. It soon becomes apparent that the darling of the lunch is, once again, Ameiko Kaijitsu, whose remarkable curry-spiced salmon and early winterdrop mead easily overshadow the other offerings, such as the Hagfish’s lobster chowder or the White Deer’s peppercorn venison.

Finally, as the sun begins to set, a large crowd has gathered once again in the square before the cathedral in preparation for the blessing that will mark the opening of the rebuilt place of worship. Each of you has managed to find your way to the front of the crowd, front and center with a clear line of sight to the podium. The crowd buzzes with conversation in anticipation for the coming event.

Players, welcome! Take a moment to introduce your character, describe them. Perhaps note what they've been up to during the festival today. You can also introduce yourself to your neighbors if you so choose, or perhaps you've met already? The choice is yours, and the game is begun!

Hucla looked about as she pushed through the crowd, the crowd more or less parting for her as they noticed the dark green skin and the prominent tusks along with her natural musky odour mixed with brimstone. Taller than average she could see the stage and was curious what all the fuss was about? It had been a hard few weeks travelling West from the Trunau in the Belzeken Holds. The outlands in Varissia had been a surprisingly savage place but she had made it finally to the coast. Now, finally she could look for somewhere to settle. The Swallow Tail festival had been a nice suprise when she had passed through Nybor recently. A festival like this could give her the opportunity to sell her wares and to see if there was work to allow her to earn some coin before she headed to one of the bigger cities like Riddleport and Magnimar.

Since arriving 2 days ago she had been relaxing in the Hagfish, eyeing the well named fish in the tank and starting to speak to the locals to see if they had problems they wanted "blown up" or anything alchemical they needed making. She had also popped into see the half elf Nisk Tander, the man who ran "Bottled Solutions" the local alchemist, judging by the marks and smells it seemed he could do with some help.

She was tall and well muscled, but oddly for a half orc possessed an almost human head of hair which blew wild in the low wind. Dressed in thick hides she was sweating in the Varisian heat but still carried her arms and hide, both as a result of her ubrining in Trunau where danger could be lurking and also because the door locks in the hagfish didn't seem that great.

She glanced around with interest, a flagon of nice mead in one hand a chunk of fire roasted venison and root vegatbles packed into a flatbread in her other hand and watched the proceedings with interest. Maybe, if this was how much fun Sandpoint was she could delay going to a bigger city for longer than she had planned. Mouth still partially full she mumbles to a more junior looking cleric of Desna nearby, "Greetings. A nice festival. I'm not from these parts, what happened to the old Cathedral?"

Ozax, having recently been released from his master, and now a fully fledged (if not slightly egotistical) mage of his right, was having a sort of...vacation if you will. He had heard of this place, and something keened of his memory about Thassilonia. And even though he hated the subject, or even to use his fathers forced tuition, which he thought was a monumental waste of time, he actually rather liked the idea of looking into the subject here. Plus, the weather had turned out to be remarkable, and he was enjoying the feeling of being able to do...whatever he wanted.

The food had been marvelous, and he had tasted it tall, he wasn't a fan of the favorite, liking the veal much more, but he couldn't ignore the skill of balanced flavors in the dish, and didn't argue the matter at all.

He managed to find his way upfront eager to see the new cathedral, it wasn't every day one opened, and he was intrigued what it looked like. He eyed an orcish woman with tusked teeth, but paid her no mind, intent on the unveiling.

Julian

Along with much of the past week, Julian's morning had been occupied assisting the local priest (one Father Zantus) in preparing the newly constructed cathedral for service. A day spent in fine details, each item placed just so to allow the reflowering of faith in Sandpoint to grow in the most fertile and well prepared soil possible. A quiet, restrained lunch had sufficed to keep the young priest energized and engaged, if a little stifled, until the final moments before the grand presentation. Released to join the crowd and learn from the presentation of a "true priest", Julian had found himself standing at the forefront of the crowd awaiting the Father's arrival.

~~~
Julian jumps slightly at the sudden intrusion of words into his thoughts, and he turns to the woman addressing him. "A good evening to you, madam. The old church... a fire, I've heard.
Some conflict or other, an issue some five years ago. I don't know much of it, to be honest. I've been far too busy helping with the preparations for new worship here." He takes a moment to really look at the woman. "What brings you to this place here on this day? One of the faithful, perhaps?"
Looking down at her bandoleers of alchemical extracts, her potions and her weapons slung on her back she grins and shakes her head. "Nope, the Lady of dreams and butterflies doesn't hold the most interest for me. Btu she does arrange a nice festival" she adds the last with a tusked grin to take the sting out of the polite refusal for Desna. "I am wandering, exploring and helping the locals with problems and offering alchemical things." She glances at acolyte. "I had thought to set up a stall and maybe stay a few weeks, would there be much of a market here for the mysteries of the alchemical." She gestures to the street where Bottles solutions lay, "Maybe Master Tander could do with some help?"
Rolf SteelSong meanders through the crowd gathered before the church, the roasted thigh of some avian clutched in one hand and a stein of winterdrop mead in the other. He's been enjoying the various foods to his content despite good uncle's real reason for bringing him to this festival.
Rolf never really was all that interested in trade, a fact his family is all too aware of. That his uncle claimed to have the ability to change that by escorting the young dwarf to these grounds was a blessing in their eyes.
Uncle Gmir was far more concerned about Rolf 'becoming an adult', which, in turn, meant getting aquainted with willing partners. Not much of a priority for Rolf, but there was promise of food and good times, so here he is, having a grand old time.
A sharp retort, like the crack of distant thunder, slices through the excited crowd as the sun’s setting rays paint the western sky. A stray dog that has crawled under a nearby wagon to sleep starts awake, and the buzz of two dozen conversations quickly hushes as all heads turn toward the central podium, where a beaming Father Zantus has taken the stage. He clears his throat, takes a breath to speak, and suddenly a woman’s scream slices through the air. A few moments later, another scream rises, then another. Beyond them, a sudden surge of strange new voices rises—high-pitched, tittering shrieks that sound not quite human.
The crowd parts and something low to the ground races by, giggling with disturbing glee as the stray dog gives a pained yelp and then collapses with a gurgle, its throat cut open from ear to ear. As blood pools around its head, the raucous sound of a strange song begins, chanted from shrill, scratchy voices.
THE GOBLIN SONG
Goblins chew and goblins bite.
Goblins cut and goblins fight.
Stab the dog and cut the horse,
Goblins eat and take by force!
Goblins race and goblins jump.
Goblins slash and goblins bump.
Burn the skin and mash the head,
Goblins here and you be dead!
Chase the baby, catch the pup.
Bonk the head to shut it up.
Bones be cracked, flesh be stewed,
We be goblins! You be food!
Ozax, having paid little attention to the conversation between the priest and the alchemist, sees the shape that rushed by and murdered that poor dog: a single goblin that now hides at the edge of a wagon, licking blood off it's jagged blade and looking at the crowd as if to find a new target. His keen perception also catches two more goblins that are edging around some bails of hay nearby, and seem ready to attack!
For this battle we will use group initiative. Party first, then goblins. Only Ozax gets to act in the surprise round with the goblins, which occurs right now!
Ozax was slightly bored, he'd admit, i mean, it was pretty an all, but he was more excited about the ancient ruins and texts, and the food, so all this ceremony was annoying as it was keeping him from the things he wanted, but he had to go through it, so be it.
But then the screaming happened, he looked up and and about, scanning the area for something, what was going on?
Right there! .....a Goblin? And there, and there! two more!
"GOBLINS!!" he screamed at the top of his lungs, pointing at the little blighter with a finger, and recalling the cantrip as his old master had taught him. "uvelucal!" he said with force, conjuring a ball of acid and sending it to the goblin who had killed the dog.
Ozax steps forward, raising a hand and with a mystical word sending a glistening ball of acid that flies through the air towards the goblin sailing between the various bystanders and missing the goblin by several inches, sizzling instead into the side of the wagon. The goblin barks a laugh at this and leans over to lick the wagon where the acid splashed, only to yelp and claw at his tongue at the sudden burning numbness that threads through its mouth. (1 damage taken)
The other two goblins both lift weapons and lash out! The first jumps up on the hay bail and whips his Dogslicer back and forth, viciously menacing the heads of those who are tall enough. The other dashes forward, slashing wildly with its jagged Dogslicer at the crowd.
Narrator
The newly formed group of adventurers surges forward to meet the new threat of fire-waving goblins. Hucla's enlarged state makes the bomb that much larger as the half-orc almost casually lobs it towards the singing goblin. All five of the goblins pause to watch as it sails overhead, the four who aren't singing let out an impressed "Oooooooh..." as they watch it descend to burst in a fiery explosion of doom and destruction! The goblins now all release the "AAAAARGH!" that naturally follows their previous expression as the wave of flame erupts and surrounds them, leaving the four torch-waving goblins tottering and scarred and spattered with the messy remains of the fifth goblin, of whom very little trace remains. The party may suppose that were the goblin wearing shoes, only the shoes would remain.
The remaining goblins scream and break, disengaging and darting away in terror from the party. One of them is summarily crushed into the ground by Julian's morningstar, the cleric having to wrest the spines from the cobblestones having encountered so little resistance to his swing. Another is cut down as it flees by Rolf's gleaming mind-blade, but the remaining 2 disappear into the crowd, though it seems likely that they will be trampled before they can cause any significant issues.
As the party looks around, it appears that much of the conflict has moved on. Goblin corpses are scattered across the courtyard, along with several unfortunate citizens who appear to have been cut down in the fray. In the distance, sword-clashes and faint calls for help can be heard. Much closer and more immediate is the sound of a scream nearby and the frantic barking of a dog.
The sound comes from just around the corner, and the party moves nearly as one to find new challenge. They turn the corner just in time to see a mighty goblin atop a feral goblin dog, which appears for all intents and purposes to be a cross between a dog and a rat, chopping down into a much more normal and acceptable dog sending it to the ground, twitching in its death throws. Several other goblins spring from concealment, having witnessed their leader slay the fearsome dog and now step forward to threaten and encircle a man in rich finery who crouches behind a rain barrel, calling for help desperately.
Party, the goblins are distracted and you have the opportunity to engage unnoticed!
The half orc grins as the bomb explodes turning the goblins into green paste. "Gods I enjoyed that!" she bellows to the general area, laughing heartily. An amusing display from the currently 12ft tall half orc woman. Hearing more screams she turns to the rest of the likely would be heroes alongside her, "Come on, I've heard more trouble ahead." Rounding the corner and seeing the mounted savage goblin, she pauses, a savage grin on her face, long tusks exposed. Then she charges forward axe raised.
Blasted by the expanse of colored light, the goblin rider along with its foul mount both collapse. One of the goblins to the left of the apparent leader also collapses into a twitching pile, while the goblin to the right quickly shields its eyes. The other two goblins on the extreme right and left appear to have been unaffected.
Rolf
The snarl that comes from Rolf's mouth only slightly precedes his change at the git on the far right. He swings for the goblin as though aiming for an out-of-the-ballpark-homerun.
Julian
Throwing up his shield to ward his eyes from the spray of colors, Julian charges forward towards the goblin on the far left and swings his morningstar to devastating effect, shattering the goblin's skull and sending it tumbling to the ground, thoroughly dead.
Narrator
While Rolf's attack falls short of striking his opponent, the radiant blast of Ozax's magic leaves the commando with no defense against the massive strike of Hucla, whose axe splits the foul creature in twain, the head of the axe going so far as to dig into the rat-ish dog beneath it.
The remaining two goblins seem shocked at this development and begin to back away, their weapons held at the ready to defend themselves... but those weapons are shaking, perhaps with fear!
Surprise round over, Round 1: Heroes!
Hucla
Hucla looks about grinning on her tusked maw as the goblins collapse to the ground in the beam of rainbow light. Axe swinging she stands over the downed goblin leader and casually decapitates the fallen goblin
Ozax was ecstatic about his spells results, it had worked far more than his best fantasies.
He grimaced slightly, as Hucla decapitated the leader. It seemed a little un needed, but the large orc woman was in the throes of combat, who was he to judge?
He summoned a blob of acid and readied himself to throw it at one of the remainder goblins, "Be gone! lest we kill you like your boss here!"
Speaking, or intimidating were not his strong points.
Narrator
With their leader slaughtered and their allies broken and collapsed on the ground the gleefully screaming goblins transform into panicked screaming goblins who turn tail and run, ducking and weaving to avoid any potential repercussions for their flight.
From behind the barrel comes the noble, stepping past the heavily mangled body of his hunting dog to raise his hands towards our heroes. "Thank you thank you ever so much! Wondrous bravery stepping forward to defend me against these fearsome fiends!
And you!" He steps closer to Hucla in her enlarged state. "The blows you struck, so mighty! And that spray of colours that so laid them low, that was from.. you, no?" He turns now to Ozax. "You must be the mightiest of mages, sir! Truly, all, defenders of Sandpoint! You shall be celebrated, fete'd in the streets!
By your arms we are saved!"
Julian
Letting his weapon fall to his side, Julian slips it back onto its loop at his side before lifting his holy symbol and letting a wave of strong healing energy pass over those nearby but passing over the few goblins still bleeding out on the ground.
"Just doing what needed to be done, Aldern." He turns to his new companions, waiting to see how they react.
Ozax smiles as his idea works, he places his hands on his hips, and puffs his chest out, proud as a peacock. And then the Mayor steps out, and prattles out accolades upon them for their actions, he suddenly realizes he looks ridiculous, and deflates.
"Yes, of course." Embarrassed by his actions, "We should probably find out why they attacked, it could be something else is going on."
Hucla
Hucla swings at a few of the ceratures as they flee then watches alert lest anymore return before shrinking back down to her normal imposing height and build. As the noble creeps out she eyes him suspiciously, not used to such open and friendly approaches from pink skins. She nods, "Aye, you are welcome. Goblins are vermin that need eradicating. Lets hope there is no more of them." As she speaks she bends down, roughly searching the pieces of the dead goblin leader at her feet. As Ozax speaks she nods, "Time for rewards later. We need to make sure thats the last of them gone from this nice village."
