It all started in 1983 with the Lost Worlds booklet Skeleton with Scimitar and Shield. These were combat booklets, not rpgs, but I was struck with the idea of playing an intelligent skeleton warrior.

Fast-forward 36 years later and I finally found a DM willing to let me play one! The 5th edition D&D rules with the skeleton npc from the dmg. I am going to play a berserker barbarian. This should be fun!

I'm sorry all I can think of is the song of my favorite skeleton warrior (https://youtu.be/-aUARXevQCo?t=21).

I hope this is 5e, because a PF undead can explicitly not be affected by moral boni and 3.5 skeletons dont have a con score.

I like, nay LOVE Undertale but tbh this is what I thought of first (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTgFtxHhCQ0).

Probably belongs in the 5E Subforum.

But neat! Happy for you!

That's an option? Hmm, I'm going to have to re-read that section because that sounds like a lot of fun!

I put it here because I wanted it long before 5e or even 2e existed. I came close with GURPS once but couldn’t find a gm then.

And it is not strictly speaking a pc option in 5e but an npc option exists in the dmg so ask your dm.

Let me know how it turns out. I'd like to play a skeleton sometime too.

My dm is being generous. But says that way he doesn’t have to hold back. We shall see.

If they were animated by an evil necromancer, they're already under immoral bony effects, so that's consistent.

Skeletons are awesome. How are you planing on healing, though? I'd rule that necrotic or at least negative energy effects like Enervation heal you, but 5E doesn't have any official rules for that.

So he has no bones about you playing a Skeleton?
Glad that this idea has been in your skull for so long! Finally being able to play one must tickle your funny bone!
I will stop with the pun, and stop ribbing you!

Yeah I think I am stuck with resting and silently begging for potions of healing for now.

The DM ain’t pulling punches. I had to outrun a rolling boulder and then was face to face with opponents with bludgeoning weapons, all of which would do twice the damage to me! Thank goodness my face companion talked us all out of combat, as skeletons can’t talk or write!

I feel like if you're a player character with your own intelligence and not someone else's minion, you should be able to talk and write. That's a little unfair.

Well I don’t want to wait another 36 years so I will take it.

Tough break that you can't even write. Usually not being able to quickly communicate is hindrance enough. Still, thanks for the update on the skeleton story!

BTW, what page is the skeleton NPC on in the DMG? I haven't seen it.

I am fortunate that the party wizard uses Rary’s Telepathic Bond. So I can communicate with the party and sometimes can tell them what some non-common speaking monsters are saying as I know a lot of languages (I can hear them at least).

And I politely pretend not to notice that the party has equipped themselves with bludgeoning weapons.

Oh, and the npc skeleton is on dmg p. 282.

I'm not sure if you already know this, but maybe you could be interested in this free indie RPG

Basically you play a skelleton from a dungeon. It even has an option to play alone (so to speak).

That looks interesting, thanks! That said, my wife lets me out to play once a week and the game my friends are into right now is D&D so it may have to wait. Hopefully not another 36 years!
