Untethered Monk

Adventures: An untethered monk goes on adventures as a form of meditation on the nature of their existence, but they may also be tasked by the order they are a part of. They gain experience as they encounter other parts of existence and accumulate a wider understanding of how all things interact.

Characteristics: An untethered monk is a warrior who is capable of ignoring some of the burdens of the environment at hand that would hold others back in combat. This also allows them to strike their enemies with fewer but more focused powerful attacks even though they are not as sturdy as some other warriors would be.
Untethered monks also gain a number of other abilities as they gain a greater understanding of their own existence. A few such examples are the ability to heal themselves, travel long distances, and obtain information more readily.

Alignment: Untethered monks must have a neutral view of order and chaos to understand the balance of the system they reside within. Generally, untethered monks are less likely to have no inclination on the morality scale of alignment as this sometimes causes them to be less driven towards observing new experiences. Morality also influences how an untethered monk regards wisdom. A good aligned untethered monk shares wisdom freely. A neutral aligned untethered monk exchanges wisdom for other wisdom. An evil aligned untethered monk hoards wisdom for themselves.

Religion: Untethered monks may revere deities with a more calm demeanor as well as an alignment matching their own. However, an untethered monk may also be more focused on meditation in general than reverence.

Background: Untethered monks are almost always part of an order into which they are usually inducted from a young age. Potential recruits to the order are occasionally scouted out based on whether they seem to embody the ideals that such an order represents. In other cases the order may accept orphans or participate in a process similar to an apprenticeship.
While an untethered monk often searches for meaning as they adventure, they may periodically return to their monasteries to share the information they have gleaned with other members as well as to undertake quests for their order.
Untethered monks encountering others like themselves may exchange wisdom they have attained over their time. Unlike other monks, untethered monks are not as likely to compete in strength of ki.

Races: Untethered monks are frequently from races known for having the potential for seeing the big picture. Elves are the most likely to be untethered monks because their longer life spans afford them more time to observe events. Races with lifespans on par with a human can become untethered monks, but this is usually the result of being raised in an order from their youth. Half-Orcs are unlikely to become untethered monks as their society is more focused in directly applicable events.

Other Classes: Untethered monks relate well with classes that use martial arts prowess even though their approach is less completely connected with physical ability. They don't take a poor view of any class in particular, but they do not connect with the desire for unlimited accumulation of material possessions. Untethered monks have particular affinity for sorcerers and other classes whose power can come from within rather than physical objects.

Role: An untethered monk is a front line combatant. Despite the fact that they do not use weapons in the same way that other classes do, they are capable of inflicting powerful blows against opponents. They also have some ability to perform skilled roles such as scouting with appropriate training.

Game Rule Information:

Abilities: Strength is used by an untethered monk when attacking directly and is even channeled through his ki into some of his attacks. Wisdom affects several of the abilities of an untethered monk including his defense and healing potential. Constitution allows the untethered monk to withstand more attacks that deal hit point damage.

Alignment: Any nonchaotic and nonlawful.

Hit Die: d8.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency

Untethered monks are proficient with the club, crossbow (light or heavy), dagger, handaxe, javelin, kama, nunchaku, quarterstaff, sai, shuriken, siangham, sling, and unarmed strike.

Untethered monks are not proficient with any armor or shields

When wearing armor, using a shield, or carrying a medium or heavy load, an untethered monk loses his AC bonus, as well as his overwhelming impact and untethered step abilities.

Untethered Fist (Su)

An untethered monk can channel the power of his ki to use the strength of his body at a short distance or reinforce his direct strikes.

Whenever an untethered monk makes an unarmed strike, he may envelop his one of his hands (or similar) with a translucent fist to add extra strength behind it. When doing this, an untethered monk adds 1.5x his strength modifier on his melee damage rolls rather than 1x his strength modifier as well as 1/2 his Wisdom modifier (if any, rounded up). Alternatively, an untethered monk may make this translucent fist attack a target within 10 feet of them without the untethered monk needing to make any physical movements at all. As a result, an untethered monk may make attacks even while grappled, paralyzed, or otherwise physically incapable of movement. However, the untethered monk only adds 1/2 his strength modifier and 1/2 his Wisdom modifier (if any, rounded up) to the melee damage rolls when making attacks in this way. Even while striking remotely, the connection the untethered monk has with this attack causes it to always treated as a melee attack (though harmful effects of striking a target that would not apply if it were a ranged attack still don't apply). All attack roll and damage roll bonuses to unarmed strikes apply when using untethered fist directly or remotely. Against incorporeal targets, this ability only adds a portion strength modifier to damage as though making a remote strike unless the untethered monk's fist could also strike them. Two weapon fighting cannot be used with this ability and power attack treats untethered fist strikes as one handed attacks. The damage dealt by this ability is subject to damage reduction. This ability doesn't increase the area that the untethered monk threatens unless otherwise specified.

An untethered monk does not gain a +2 bonus on attack rolls with untethered fist while charging, but he does gain a +2 bonus on attack rolls and an extra 1d6 damage with untethered fist if he has not yet moved in the round in which he is attacking with untethered fist. This bonus 1d6 damage for not moving may only be applied to one eligible attack of his choice per round (he must choose before seeing the success or failure of the attack roll).

While wielding a ki focus weapon in a hand not making an untethered fist attack, the untethered monk may treat the enhancement bonus and special abilities of that weapon as though it applied to his untethered fist attacks. Only one weapon may be used in this way at any time, switching between weapons for the purpose of this ability requires a standard action in addition to drawing a new weapon.

Even in places where supernatural effects do not normally function (such as within an antimagic field), an untethered monk can attempt to use this ability by making a DC 20 Will save. On a successful save, the untethered monk may use this ability for a number of rounds equal to his class level and this ability is treated as extraordinary (whenever it would be beneficial it can be treated as extraordinary, supernatural, or both on a case by case basis) before he needs to check again. On an unsuccessful attempt, the untethered monk cannot use this ability in that round. As a move action on his turn, the untethered monk can attempt a new Will save to use this ability normally while he remains within the supernatural negating effect.

AC Bonus (Ex)

While an untethered monk is less burdened by the physical weight of the world he can use his untethered fist to deflect attacks with incredible efficiency.

The untethered monk adds his Wisdom bonus (if any) to his AC as a deflection bonus. In addition, an untethered monk gains a +1 bonus to the AC granted by this ability at 5th level. This bonus increases by 1 for every five untethered monk levels thereafter (+2 at 10th, +3 at 15th, and +4 at 20th level).

These bonuses to AC apply even when the untethered monk is flat-footed. He loses these bonuses when he cannot make use of his untethered fist ability, when he wears any armor, when he carries a shield, or when he carries a medium or heavy load.

Unarmed Combat

An untethered monk trains his martial abilities with his fists to a greater extent than others and his specialization grants him greater benefits.

At 1st level, an untethered monk gains Improved Unarmed Strike as a bonus feat. An untethered monk’s attacks may be with either fist interchangeably or even from elbows, knees, and feet. This means that an untethered monk may even make unarmed strikes with his hands full. There is no such thing as an off-hand attack for an untethered monk striking unarmed. An untethered monk may thus apply his full Strength bonus on damage rolls for all his unarmed strikes. While at least one of the untethered monk's hands is empty, he may apply his Wisdom bonus (if any) + 2 in place of his Dexterity bonus to his armor class (this stacks with the AC bonus from Wisdom he also gets as described above in the AC bonus ability). He may not apply his Wisdom bonus in place of his Dexterity bonus if he is wearing armor, using a shield, or carrying a medium or heavy load. He loses this bonus any time he would lose his dexterity bonus to AC. This bonus to AC does not stack with natural armor bonuses to AC.

Usually an untethered monk’s unarmed strikes deal lethal damage, but he can choose to deal nonlethal damage instead with no penalty on her attack roll. He has the same choice to deal lethal or nonlethal damage while grappling.

An untethered monk’s unarmed strike is treated both as a manufactured weapon and a natural weapon for the purpose of spells and effects that enhance or improve either manufactured weapons or natural weapons.

An untethered monk also deals more damage with his unarmed strikes than a normal person would. At 1st level an untethered monk deals 1d6 with his unarmed strikes. This damage increases to 1d8 at 10th level. This damage is not negatively affected by the size of the untethered monk.

At 3rd level and every 3 levels thereafter, the untethered monk gets a +1 bonus on attack and damage rolls with unarmed strikes as well as his untethered fist (+1 at 3rd, +2 at 6th, etc.).

Detached Calm (Ex)

An untethered monk can appreciate the broader picture of his mind and comprehend fear as an aspect of one part the mind.

At 2nd level, an untethered monk is immune to fear effects of all kinds.

Overwhelming Impact (Ex)

An untethered monk may simplify the nature of things in his mind to overwhelm the defenses of what he strikes.

At 3rd level, whenever an untethered monk hits a target with at least two unarmed strikes or strikes with his untethered fist, the enemy automatically takes extra damage equal as though struck by either an unarmed strike or untethered fist (the untethered monk chooses which sort of attack to use). Damage dealt by this ability ignores damage reduction and hardness. This ability can only affect any specific target once in a round.

An untethered monk may also use this ability when attacking as a standard action, but they must successfully make another attack roll at the total of attack bonuses used for the standard action attack + 4. If this second attack roll is successful, this ability functions as though the untethered monk had hit the target twice as described above in the ability, but only for the purpose of this ability.

Ki Healing (Su)

An untethered monk learns to understand how ki can interact with his body to restore it from a damaged state.

At 4th level, an untethered monk may cause himself to heal wounds at a supernatural rate. An untethered monk may gain fast healing equal to his untethered monk level for a number of rounds equal to his set Wisdom modifier (if any, see setting below) + 1 per day. This ability requires no actions to use and the duration need not be consecutive rounds.

Once per day, you set your current Wisdom score as the wisdom score used by this ability. While this ability doesn't have a set Wisdom score, it is treated as though using a Wisdom score of 10.

Distant Ki Strike (Ex)

An untethered monk eventually gains greater ability to extend his concept of his ki to further distances.

At 5th level, an untethered monk may strike targets within 15 feet of himself when striking remotely using untethered fist.

Ki Potency (Ex)

An untethered monk learns to focus his ki more effectively when striking.

At 6th level, an untethered monk may add his Wisdom modifier (if any) to attack and damage rolls with unarmed strikes when using his untethered fist ability to directly or remotely strike instead of 1/2 his Wisdom modifier for only damage rolls.

Ki Sense (Su)

An untethered monk gains the ability to perceive ki outside himself to such an extent that he may visualize it in his mind.

At 7th level, an untethered monk may choose to sense ki within 30 feet of himself at will. All sentience, which by extension generates ki, within this range (generally creatures have sentience if they have a Wisdom score, but something with sentience and no wisdom score might also be eligible, as well as objects and places that radiate ki) is visible to the untethered monk without him even needing to look in the direction of any given source of ki as though he had blindsight of the source of ki. This blindsight reveals what a source of the ki would look like under good lighting conditions, but does not give any vision of its surroundings. This ability functions even in a vacuum and can differentiate color and visual contrast (allowing reading), but it can be fooled by illusions that require a will save. This ability is blocked by solid objects and never causes negative effects from its usage (a gaze attack wouldn't affect the untethered monk through this ability for example).

Greater Ki Body (Ex)

An untethered monk establishes a greater connection between his body and his ki.

At 7th level, an untethered monk may add 1x his strength modifier to damage rolls with unarmed strikes when using his untethered fist to strike remotely. Furthermore, the untethered monk gains an extra hp per HD (for every type of HD, class levels, racial, etc.).

Ki Versatility (Ex)

An untethered monk discovers that his ki need not be shaped strictly after his body if he can conceive otherwise.

At 8th level, an untethered monk may have his direct and remote strikes with untethered fist deal any combination of bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.

Greater Ki Healing (Su)

An untethered monk's ki eventually becomes more efficient at mending his injuries when used in that fashion.

At 9th level, an untethered monk uses twice his untethered monk level to determine the amount of fast healing per round.

Untethered Body (Ex)

An untethered monk discovers the nature of the existence his body to an extent that he is not as easily afflicted by the ailments of the world.

At 10th level, an untethered monk gains immunity to disease and poison.

Overwhelm the Shores

An untethered monk further explores his ability to shape his ki outside himself as a means to strike at many enemies in a manner like the waves crashing upon a shore.

At 11th level, an untethered monk may choose to have his untethered fist overwhelm his enemies as a tide overwhelms the shores. As a standard action, an untethered monk can cause all targets in a 30 foot line to take damage from his untethered fist. This attack deals twice as much damage as a single untethered fist attack would normally deal, but targets potentially affected may make a reflex save for half damage. An untethered monk may choose to have his attack flow harmlessly around any targets of his choice within the affected area as desired. This ability is subject to damage reduction.

The save DC against this attack is 10 + 1/2 untethered monk level + the untethered monk's Strength modifier.

Untethered Mind (Ex)

An untethered monk gains a deeper understanding of the parts that comprise his own consciousness and can use that understanding to evaluate his mind from a distance while controlling it to a greater extent.

At 12th level, an untethered monk can never receive a dice result less than 11 on a Will save, mental ability score check, or mental ability score based skill check (the mental ability scores are Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma). If he would receive a result less than 11 on the dice roll, it is treated as an 11. This means that he can never fail a will save on a natural result of 1.

Improved Ki Sense (Su)

An untethered monk can sense the ki in his surroundings both more acutely and at greater distances.

At 13th level, an untethered monk can now sense ki within 60 feet of himself. Furthermore, he can sense the impressions of ki within the environment which grants him full blindsight within 30 feet of himself.

Improved Distant Ki Strike (Ex)

An untethered monk learns to let go of some of the unnecessary restrictions his mind subconsciously imposes on his ki allowing him to strike at targets further and further away. This allows the untethered monk to be a threat to his enemies in a larger variety of circumstances.

At 14th level, an untethered monk may strike targets within close range (25 feet + 5 feet per 2 class levels) of himself when striking remotely using untethered fist. The range that the untethered monk threatens with his untethered fist is increased by 5 feet and he may make direct strikes within this threatened range. Lastly, the untethered monk is not treated as helpless as long as he retains the ac bonus granted by way of his untethered fist.

Untethered Essence (Ex)

An untethered monk comprehends the nature of their own essence and how to manipulate it against energies that would harm it.

At 15th level, an untethered monk gains immunity to negative and positive energy that would harm him.

Untethered Step (Ex)

An untethered monk discovers that changes in his location can be viewed in many different ways and thus can be made by redefining his location in ways other than simple physical motion.

At 16th level, once per day, by moving at least 15 feet (such as by walking, flying, etc.), an untethered monk may plane shift or teleport (but only himself and up to 50 lbs of equipment) to any location on any plane of existence he is familiar with and arrive exactly at his intended destination. Because form of travel does not use an intermediary plane due to the untethered monk is redefining his place in existence, this ability has a 50% chance to ignore effects that affect extraplanar travel and teleportation (such as dimensional anchor).

Greater Ki Sense (Ex)

An untethered monk's broader perceptions of more than just the physical world allows him to sense ki in new and greater ways.

At 17th level, an untethered monk gains full blindsight within 60 feet of himself and even illusions cannot fool his ki sense. Furthermore, this ability becomes an extraordinary ability.

Untethered Sentience (Ex)

An untethered monk learns to elevate his consciousness to new levels to understand greater mysteries he seeks out.

At 19th level, once per day, an untethered monk may meditate on a question as a standard action and receive input as per the contact other plane spell. There is a 90% chance of a true answer and a 10% chance of a "don't know" answer. This ability does not risk intelligence and charisma decrease or any other drawbacks.

Untethered Existence (Ex)

An untethered monk gains the ability to partially modify his own existence after gaining sufficient perspective of some of the aspects of his existence.

At 20th level, the untethered monk reverts to his adulthood state physically and cease to age thereafter. The untethered monk no longer needs to breathe, drink, eat, or sleep to survive. Once per day, the untethered monk may immediately adjust his age category or even other aspects of themselves within the limitations of the alter self spell (this change stays in effect until he changes again or choose to revert back to his original form or original age category, use untethered monk level in place of caster level for maximum HD). Lastly, the untethered monk may always be raised from death if he dies from old age in his form as of his adulthood stage in life and he never loses constitution when raised from death. This ability is always retained once acquired even if the untethered monk loses it later on (such as due to level loss).

Ex-Untethered Monks

An untethered monk who becomes lawful or chaotic cannot gain new levels as an untethered monk while he is lawful or chaotic but retains all untethered monk abilities.

Like a member of any other class, an untethered monk may be a multiclass character, but multiclass untethered monks face a special restriction. An untethered monk who gains a new class or (if already multiclass) raises another class by a level may not raise his untethered monk level until he completes his choice of either a month in meditation or a quest given to him by his monastery, though he retains all his untethered monk abilities.

Once I finish this... it will be presented mostly as is. Is it optimal? Don't know, but it was fun to make.
