Perhaps a genius wizard touching upon the divine to make himself a mix of both positive and negative energy being, Negative or Positive energy attacks on him would deal only half damage and if the intent of the spell is not hostile then it heals the lich for half the damage roll. Touch attack also dealing negative or positive damage depending on intent of the lich. While ritual to become one would need a determination far greater than becoming normal lich, it would require years of research, burning fortune, research on undead and living beings and how the energies affect them. Perhaps spending a few years healing the sick and injured with scrolls, wands to see how they work exactly without becoming a cleric. A small crusade to destroy undead, capture them and create both mindless and intelligent for some time without going too evil, just to see how they work. While creating a phylactery and becoming neutral lich who does not corrupt his soul just to flee death embrace but a person who severs his fate of afterlife to be truly free being, neither forced to kill for living nor saving people just because. Because he wishes to free himself from sway of gods and the divide of good vs bad, chaos vs law, a perfection of existence, a step towards divinity perhaps.

What you're wanting is basically just a wizard that wants to become either an omnipotent overgod ala Faerun's Ao or a neutral-ish god of the portfolios of life and death.

Most of your idea does make little sense. Positive and negative energy are supposed to represent life and death, Good and Evil (capital letters as in D&D alignments not philosophical ones). There are beings that try to find a perfect balance but calling that a lich is really not what you're after.

*snip*

This seems interesting, but I'm not sure what you are asking, or if you are asking anything.

I too am confused by the opening post. However:

To have Mastery over Death one must also have Mastery over Life. Otherwise one would have no ability to reverse Death. A necromancer at the pinnacle of their field would be able to use the Positive energy necromancy like Cures & Resurrections.

In D&D 3.5 you can have a Dread Necromancer with the Touch of Healing reserve feat. As a result, at will, your touch deals your choice of negative or positive energy. Taking the Renewal domain through Arcane Disciple unlocks the restoration positive energy necromancy. Getting access to Revivify or Resurrection was a bit harder.

Of course such a Necromancer would have more options than merely Undeath for staving off Death. (insert Invisibility Cloak joke here). Such a Necromancer would only don Undeath if it suited them, rather that scramble for Lichdom out of desperation. Perhaps instead they would merely stop aging, thus granting them the power to alway raise themselves from the dead. Almost as if Death was merely a revolving door, over which they stand as the gatekeeper.

So, uh, Vecna?

He became a god, he has clerics, he can grant healing spells... yeah. He doesn't meet all the specifics, but eh, close enough.
