Today, I heard two friends talking about Linux, and they both pronounced it differently, one saying it like "lie-nucks", with the other saying "lin (as in linen) -ucks. So i was wondering if any of you lovely folk could tell me?

Thanks in advance.

Pretty sure it's the second one.

It's "lie-nucks". I'm positive of that. I use it

I said "lie-nux" till I saw it pronounced the other way in an online video. Now I say it lin-ucks. Nothing conclusive though.

I say lin-ucks, but what do I know? I'm a Windows user.

Thanks guys. I also thought that it was lie-nucks, until I heard my friend say otherwise.

I pronounce it 'uh BUN too.'

Nah, it's actually LIN (as in linen) ux (as in tux). At least that's how the speakers at USENIX (http://www.usenix.org/) pronounce it.

This isn't really disputed by most linux users. What is more controversial is DEB ee en vs DEEB ee an, JEN too vs GEN too (with a hard g), PORT ej vs por TAJ, and whether or not the g in gnome is silent and if it's not silent then what do you do with it (gnome devs insist its a hard g and pronounce it GUH nome but I've also heard Jee nome).

Lie - nucks is easier to say though.

Just buy windows and erase Linux from the World abolishing this entire argument.

What's flamebait? Is that an insult to my ginger hair?

Just buy windows and erase Linux from the World abolishing this entire argument.

Or better, buy a Mac, it's now Unix certified.

In English, it's Lin-ucks; in German, Lee-nucks.

For me, it's P-C-L-O-S. Most user friendly system ever.

Personally I have no use for Linux, but I hope that it helps wipe Mac from existance, though Apple can go on making "hip" gadgets because they seem to be much better at that then making computer systems. (even there though I have a lot of issues with what they do and how they do it)
Linux gives people a good alternative to Windows and that is just about the only point of getting a Mac.

In terms of pronouncing it I've also heard it pronounced with a fairly strong x at the end, not anything like -ucks. I agree with Valadil in pronunciation.

Linux is one of the most incredible things that man has created. It is friendlier than everybody says. Honestly.

Ubuntu user since '07 yay!!!

Lie - nucks is easier to say though.

Just buy windows and erase Linux from the World abolishing this entire argument.

But don't use Vista or it'll take you three days to erase anything.

my vote: Lin-nucks .. can't say i've ever heard of people pronouncing it any other way,... maybe its a regional thing [shrugs]..

i'm a Windows user.. however Ubuntu is very surprisingly good.
