View Full Version : Has there ever been a class or a kit that used a rope or lasso Wonder Woman-style?

I was looking through an old AD&D Fighter book, saw the "Amazon" kit, and started wondering if there had ever been a rope specialist, because you honestly could to interesting things with it: Snagging weapons, tripping, binding, Indiana Jones-style whip-swings, etc.

So has any edition done something with this? Or is there an interesting homebrew thingie, generally agreed upon to not be broken or useless?

I don't know about RAW or widely accepted, but I have a homebrew "magic" item I've incorporated a time or two in the form of a Grappling Hook. Allows for grappling at 10 feet range and advantage on climbing while using it. As for using it offensively, I haven't had anybody try it yet but I imagine it'd function like a whip

The gold rope of an devil "Aryanus" (however you spell it) comes to mind. Here I go lookimg for the spelling.

Erinyes!
And their

Rope of Entanglement

This rope is 30 feet long and weighs 3 pounds. If you hold one end of the rope and use an action to speak its Command Word, the other end darts forward to Entangle a creature you can see within 20 feet of you. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or become Restrained.

You can release the creature by using a Bonus Action to speak a second Command Word. A target Restrained by the rope can use an action to make a DC 15 Strength or Dexterity check (target's choice). On a success, the creature is no longer Restrained by the rope.

The rope has AC 20 and 20 Hit Points. It regains 1 hit point every 5 minutes as long as it has at least 1 hit point. If the rope drops to 0 Hit Points, it is destroyed. You can release the creature by using a Bonus Action to speak a second Command Word. A target Restrained

Any class that gets all Martial Weapons can do it by using a Net.

One character idea I have wanted to try for a while is using a Ranger with a Trident and a Net, basing the fighting style on the Roman gladiatorial combat style of the Retiarius.

Obviously this would be best in a nautical setting, and/or a Roman-inspired one.

Could it be a spell storing weapon with zone of truth in it?

A Newfie Ranger would be the best.

Looking at the net, it specifically forbids you from making extra attacks as part of the same action... which makes me think that a Monk would be a good choice. Attack someone with a net, then move up and Flurry at them.

3.5 has some options for you!

The Whip Climber skill trick (costs 2 skill points) turns you into Indiana Jones/Zoro. From Complete Scoundrel.

Nets (Player's Handbook I), lassos (Book of Exalted Deeds), and bolas (Arms & Equipment Guide, maybe other places too) are all exotic weapons that can be used to restrain people at a distance. Of the three, bolas have the best range but can only be used to trip (and only Medium or smaller creatures). I think lassos are your best bet, with a max range of 30ft (extendable with feats, almost certainly) and the options of restraining their upper body or just tripping them at range. Carry several, though; they're fragile.

The Justiciar prestige class (Complete Warrior) lets you hog-tie people you've successfully pinned in a grapple, and at higher levels as soon as you establish the grapple. I haven't found a way to do that with a lasso or other ranged weapon yet, but if you're playing a monstrous race with Improved Grab you can attempt to grapple every time you hit with that natural weapon. Alternatively, take the Scorpion's Grasp feat from Sandstorm to get an opportunity to grapple every time you punch someone or hit them with a light melee weapon. Either way, you can use the blood wind spell to do it at range.

Vigilante is another prestige class, not as much to do with grappling but still very thematic. Also gives you proficiency with nets for free. From Complete Adventurer.

There was a whip-focused PRC called Lasher in 3.5 that gave some special abilities with a whip or dagger-whip. That's at least fairly close.

Reflavor the net weapon to a lasso instead. Fighter, Battlemaster sub-class. Disarming strike battle maneuver. There's no rope specialist in any RAW, but it's pretty easy to make work, if you just reflavor existing rules with new visuals. Keep in mind, the Lasso of Truth is NOT Diana's primary weapon. She also uses sword and shield, fists, and magic gauntlets/bracers.

Cool thing about a net, it works with the Sharpshooter feat.

I would recommend being a battlemaster fighter who uses a whip and then take Manuvers like tripping and disarming to flavor you use of grabbing items and people with the "Lasso". Oh and sentinel will add a lot.

With a permissive DM, you can do some interesting things with the spell Thorn Whip.

This is probably your best option and could still be very functional and fun.

With a permissive DM and sharpshooter/Xbow Mastery you can also sneak attack with it. However, I agree with others that Battlemaster and whip is likely your best bet.
