With Halloween only a few weeks away, I thought it prudent to start a thread on recommending horror movies, scary books, websites and what kinds of candy to give kids. :smallwink:

I'll start things off....
headinjurytheater (http://www.headinjurytheater.com/)
The undiluted madness of Jared von Hindman. This guy lives for Halloween.

The Shadow Over Innsmouth (http://www.mythostomes.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=61&Itemid=74)
I found this helpful because my library does not carry a copy of the book.

For candy, don't give generic stuff. Sure, sometimes it's cheaper, but I always remember watching it go uneaten when I went trick-or-treating. Thinking about that brings up so many good memories...

The Shadow Over Innsmouth was spun into a half-decent B-movie called Dagon (http://imdb.com/title/tt0264508/).

Pretty good horror flick.

THIS IS...not sparta? :smallfrown:

Halloween needs more scary stuff. Smiling ghosts, cats, the same shape "haunted house"? LAAME!!!

Let's skip the cliche! We need more of this! (http://youtube.com/watch?v=0pmb_AJXncE&mode=related&search=)

We ought to get some Halloween avatars going. I few people have them already, but there hasn't been any sort of board event like there was for Spider-Man 3.

I'm gonna give kids jalepeno flavoured Jelly Beans. They ask for "Trick or Treat" and they get both. A sweet that is incredibly spice to those unsuspecting fools.

Though if I like their costumes I'll give 'em something nice like haribo etc.

Books
The original Dracula by Bram Stoker is one of my favorite books (though otherwise don't care much for vampire stuff) and I generally read it around every Halloween.

Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos is of course a great collection of short stories and some of the creepiest stuff I've ever read.

Movies
The Village is my favorite 'spooky' movie, though it's too tame for most. Mostly it's good for a romantic evening though, being a romance/thriller.

Actually, all the creepy movies by M. Night Shymalan I am a big fan of. The Sixth Sense and Signs in addition to The Village are great.

The Reaping I enjoyed a good deal...

Don't actually remember that many good spooky movies that are actually memorable aside from those.

Baby fat, you fat, fat and juicy!

You can't go wrong with Evil Dead (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083907/) the greatist of all low-budget horror films.

...and no guys, this is not sparta. :smallwink:

If they broadcast this show wherever you live, then check out Supernatural (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supernatural_television_show). I've been watching it since episode one, and I'm loving it. Also, never put up a sign that says "not giving candy this year." You will, without a doubt have eggs thrown at your house by angry 9 year olds.

A Nightmare on Elm Street. Gave me nightmares for weeks.

American Psycho is also freaky, but in a humanity-moral kind of way, not in the Halloweeny way.

I give Haribo and Kit-Kat to kids I know, those whose costumes are good, or my neighbours. For those little bastards that trick me and my fam for the hell of it, or turn up in normal clothes demanding sweets, I give 'em fruit and hard-boiled candy.

Though nowadays I'm off on Halloween parties, so I don't need to bother. Hooray!

Hmm we seem to have similar taste in things Dragonprime, Supernatural is a great show, and probably quite good for Halloween.

I don't get many kids at my door since we live on a State Road.... so I make up little bags of candy... they make out well at my place. *chuckles* one thing I like doing, that I learned from my mom (preschool teacher), is to make lollipop ghosts. Now, if you live in town and get hundreds of kids... this isn't practical.. but if you're like me and get a dozen or so... it's a lot of fun.

Buy a bag of sphere suckers... like tootsie pops.... take two Kleenex's and place them over the sucker. Take a length of dental floss and tie the kleenex off under the sucker's ball. Now you have a head, with the ghostly bottom around the stick. Take a marker and draw faces on em... because I always get very little kids, I make silly ghost faces so they don't get scared. My leftovers, since I hate tootsie pops, go to our family doctor's office where they hand em out to the kids that come thru, or usually, take them home to their kids. *chuckles*

As for things to watch... I'll be watching the Ghosthunters LIVE show that's like... 4 hours long. Probably not scary, but highly entertaining.

The best part about halloween is carving jack o lanterns. I have kits and I always carve out at least one every year. As my kidlet gets older I'm looking forward to doing the simple carvings with her, but for now, I'm still doing intricate ones.
