As an action, you present your holy symbol and speak a prayer censuring the undead. Each undead that can see or hear you within 30 feet of you must make a Wisdom saving throw. If the creature fails its saving throw, it is turned for 1 minute or until it takes any damage. A turned creature must spend its turns trying to move as far away from you as it can, and it can't willingly move to a space within 30 feet of you. lt also can't take reactions. For its action, it can use only the Dash action or try to escape from an effect that prevents it from moving. If there's nowhere to move, the creature can use the Dodge action.

Once the creature moves 30 feet away from the thing that turned it, can it again take actions and do things other than dodge or dash?

No, because it's still "a turned creature" for 1 minute unless it takes damage. That's equivalent to 10 rounds in a battle. Only after that can they act normally.

We got into this last night, obviously the players were arguing the above. So turned is a condition?

Once a creature fails it's saving throw versus this ability it is turned for one minute or until it takes damage. Those are the only two explicit ways for the turning to end. Your proximity is only used to determine which undead you can effect - but once they are effected your proximity is irrelevant.

This makes sense and I think this is what the players were arguing (me being one of them). Thanks for the insight.

This doesn't just "make sense" - it is the RAW.
