Anyone know if I can take license plates on a plane? I am considering buying a car that is 500 miles away and would be taking license plates with me. Would they be a problem in my carry-on luggage?

I can't seem to find a satisfactory answer to this question.

Why don't you check the TSA website (http://www.tsa.gov/)?

I did, it was inconclusive. They weren't listed at all, nor was anything similar listed.

When in doubt, put them in your checked luggage. That way you don't run the risk of losing the plates if the TSA decides not to let you take them on the plane.

Yeah. I'd err on the side of caution if I were you. If they don't let nail files on board (and the edges of some licence plates are pretty sharp), then you shouldn't risk it.

I thought the same thing when I saw the name of this thread. Just stay away from big angry guys who keep saying stuff like, "I'm sick of these motha-beep-ing plates on this motha-beep-ing planes!" and you should be ok.

Okay...Pain in the tuchas suggestion:

Go to the airport and talk with security. Ask them what documentation you would need, if any, to board the plane with the plates. It may be as simple as requiring DMV records showing the purchase of the vehicle and the ownership of the plates. What might be even simpler is to get temporary plates, which are basically paper, and securing them to the car while you travel home.

This, of course, applies to the use of common sense. In all likelihood, you will be arrested for your iPod making a strange noise as you board the plane. :smalltongue:

Just check put the plates in your checked luggage. It won't be a problem.
