If you make yourself a construct in pathfinder, can you give yourself construct upgrades and if yes should you.

Yes it is possible possible, but modifying constructs requires that the construct be "inanimate or nonfunctioning" at the time, which is going to put a hamper on it.

Can't you allow yourself to be disabled? If not, how does it work for NPC constructs?

Yes, but it also means you need a trusted party to do the enchantments.

And defenses in you are attacked while you are otherwise completely helpless.
