I am playing an escaped slave of Thay. He killed his master and has the criminal background as a result.

But what would a good background be for a runaway slave? We could assume he stole from his masters, but I am at a loss as to what he would have.

One can see that there are a number of different ways and places a slave can escape from, I'm thinking a choice of skills should be offered.

Further the charlatan's false identity would work as well. but again there should be a choice here as well. But what else could fit?

I don't think he would get a language, but literacy should be offered.

Lastly what do you think about a bounty on the player's head? It would be limited to the country he escaped from...But how would that work?

Pick two appropriate skills.

Pick a total of two appropriate languages and/or tools.

Pick an appropriate background feature, or make your own-background features should offer mostly minor exploration or social benefits, and definitely not combat ones.

Work with your DM for anything more.

Edit: For escaped slave, I might go Acrobatics and Sleight of Hand for the escape.

Language, one Thayan tongue.
Tool, maybe thieves' tools, for the escape again.

And background feature... Maybe Rustic Hospitality?
