The charts on pages 8-10 of the PHB show what certain ability scores mean by listing different species who have a given score as their average.
Unfortunately, other than Str and Con these charts tend to be wildly uninformative. What does it mean to be as charismatic as a barghest, or as wise as a praying mantis, or as smart as a will-o-wisp, or as agile as a lammasu?
I'm wondering if people who have a good knowledge of the monster books can provide some better comparative examples for each score. Trying to put an absolute definition on each score (like x Int = x IQ) is doomed and stupid but having a comparative basis can be informative.
Edit: Basically, these examples would be things that are a) familiar and b) something you actually think of when you think of that creature, like an angel being wise. To start off with, for example:
Average Charisma
25 - solar angel
Average Dexterity
15 - housecat
Average Intelligence
26 - pit fiend
Average Wisdom
18 - astral deva
23 - planetar
25 - solar angel
