You know, trying to ignore the whole MILF thing for a second, it doesn't look like Eugene will exactly be welcome in the Sara household if he ever does get into Celestia the Celestial Realms.

"Trying to forget she ever heard the name Eugene Greenhilt" and "always has been a wrinkled old man in his heart." aren't exactly signs that Sara really wants him back.

Interesting....

If your afterlife is your idealized image of yourself (or your true self, because I doubt Eugene sees himself as a wrinkled old man) and a True Rez brings a person back to life sans body requirement, then would a True Rez create a corporeal body fitting with the idealized image in the afterlife? Its now RAW, but a lot of Rich's jokes/world isn't RAW. Hmm...a query.

Stifler's mom is a Milf, Milf Milf, Milf, Milf, Milf. And it does stand for Mom I'd like to (obscenity retracted ).

I suppose that in celes..... top of the mountain :) your appearance changes to match your personality. Roy's mom was fun loving and young at heart and since Eugene was a crotchety, miserable (slang term for male genitalia retracted ). He appears as an old man.

Heh...cue 'Stacy's Mom'...

On a side note...when interviewed about the song 'Stacy's Mom', the origins of the song stem from a boyhood crush of a band member's grandmother who was fairly young (mid 40's I think) when the boy was 8-10 or so. It gave him the idea to write the song, but figured people weren't ready for the grand milf or gmilf...so they made the mom a younger mother, and made it the mother of some other young girl rather than part of the family.

I have to remember the psion line next time I play a Psion..priceless.

When I saw the title for this comic (I had a pretty good idea what the D stood for and I know what a MILF is) I just knew that Roy had to have found his mother, and disturbing hilarity was going to ensue.

Why is everyone else feeling embarrassed? It's not like it's your mother.
Plus, it's not like potential inbreeding would actually be a risk once you're dead.
Look, I'm just saying...

It can always feel amore than a little wierd when you see pictures of your mother as a hot 20 year old. Nobody reallly wants to think that their mother was just like the girls you knew at that age - but she was.

That was sweet.... I wonder if Roy's mom as a lover or just "uses" the tavern?Hmmm. That raises a good question. Mortal marriages have the built-in "'til death do we part" escape hatch... What about post-mortem marriage? Is it even allowed? Doesn't seem like it would fit well with the whole expectation that the dead will focus on more etherial spiritual concerns in a few decades or centuries... And eternity is a long, loooong time if you picked wrong.

Laughed out loud at "I think I can"; apparently was in the minority in not being all that creeped out by mom being a MILF, though I could sympathize with Roy.

That has to have been one of the funniest and at the same time disturbing strips yet; not only do we get a so-horrible-it's-funny psionics pun, we get to see Roy being wigged out by the fact his mom is a hottie. And that one little throwaway line from Roy's Archon- "How did you know my name?" Cute.

And this has probably already been mentioned by somebody and I just haven't had time to read it, but how many people agree with Sara, that Eugene has always been a crotchety old geezer regardless of what physical age he was at the time? (Raises hand emphatically)

Brilliant, Rich. Keep up the good work.

Well, hard to be sure, but my bet is that she is patiently waiting for him [not necessarily alone while she waits, but....] She does not say she is trying to forget Eugene, merely that she pictures herself as perfect before she met him [and many women feel that motherhood did their figure no good.]

Origen Eugune is described on his tombstone as "Devoted Husband, Passable Father". Granted, it is partly just a routine statement, but it suggests Sara had a thing for him. We can add that she died about a year later, at an age of maybe 50. That's not shockingly young, but quite a bit below what one would expect, and consistent with her dying of grief.

Now what is the shock that Sara is a hot piece? Didn't you read (Origen, SOD) Sara picks Eugene up and is not hesitant about showing off that figure.

We have been shown pretty consistently that Roy is pretty conservative, which is fitting for a LG, and makes for great amusement at his distress at finding Ma does not fit his conservative picture.

This is a very good comic, but it is distinctly predictable.

I thought along your lines at first. Which really puzzled me, since her attitude here doesn't jive with what you mentioned in the spoiler bars. Then I remembered her actions in SoD, coupled with the look on her face in #113. So I thought of an alternative idea:

It is distinctly possible that Eugene commissioned his own Memorial Staute, and if so, dictated what was to be on the statue. He's definietly ego-centric enough to have done that.

We really don't have any info either way, but it's at least one solution to the conundrum.

As for the dying a year later thing, it could just be one of those freaky coincidences. Unfortunatly we really don't know on that score at the moment either....

An alternative view on the "Devoted Husband, Passable Father" thing... Roy's mom has had three years to think about her whole life, and the place within it of her marriage to Eugene. She may have had time to realize that in retrospect, she could possibly have done better (though in fairness, she could've done worse).

Also, there's the matter of effort vs. effectiveness. Just because he was devoted to her doesn't mean he was good at reading her moods and desires and wishes. I think she may have stuck with him at least partly because she could tell that he was trying, in his rather clumsy and self-absorbed way, to be as good a husband as he could manage.

Of course, she may have stuck with him for other reasons too. The comic hasn't explored gender equality, divorce issues, or other social matters in great detail, not least because it's covered so many different parts of the world that it'd never have time to go into that level of detail for all of them, but it's possible that the lands where the Greenhilt family lived take the "until death do we part" oath quite seriously, and have no concept of no-fault divorce. But at least in part, I think Eugene Greenhilt really was a devoted husband in his intent, if perhaps his actions did not always measure up.

First post here in a while, but if anything warrants a response, its this comic.

As with most everyone else, "The Little Psion That Could" had to be one of the best puns ever. I bow to the awesomeness that is Rich. He needs to head over to Callahands for Punday Night.

As for Roy, well, its understandable to be kind of creeped out by seeing ones mom as a hot 19 year old that's physically younger than he is. Just imagine right off someone probably about 10 years younger than you acted like your mother? And then add to the awkwardness by making her attractive and that leads to Epic level awkwardness. Here's hoping Celia pops in soon so that Roy can have a little bit of relief from an afterlife that's already more stressful than he considered.

Overall, great strip.

her actions in SoD, coupled with the look on her face in #113. So I thought of an alternative idea:

It is distinctly possible that Eugene commissioned his own Memorial Staute, and if so, dictated what was to be on the statue. He's definietly ego-centric enough to have done that.

113 gives us no serious information about Sara-Jerome relations. We can rule out her being absolutely dominant in the household since she can't settle the dispute between father and son. But beyond this, we can pretty much make up any story we want. Recall too that Roy is in an emotional state and his memories are at best highly selective, if even correct.

The wording seems wrong for an Eugene commissioned memorial. One rarely confesses to being less than the best, and admitting to being a passable father, even if a standard a lot of fathers don't reach, doesn't seem likely for someone who liked to edit his own Wikiepedia article and had his Wizzie trophies on display in the front hall. He would just too much want to put a good spin on it. "Disappointed" is a word that he might use. "Guiding". [Roy would call it manipulative, but...] "Inspiring" [Just what he inspired might be disputed, but...]
Now Sara writing it can be seen as willing to use passable. Not surprisingly, she is on her children's side and wanted Eugene to do a good deal more. So if she had put down he was a great hubby, she might feel forced to mention fatherhood, and decided that passable was about the best she could honestly do.

So I will stick with Sara being eager for Jerome to rejoin her, tho she may have a boyfriend[s] comforting her in the meantime.

I know Eugene's fans (a concept that confuses me to no end) are hoping Sara is waiting for him to return so they can reconcile, but I'm not really buying it. I have to imagine their marriage is pretty much over, as Eugene was already playing the field after he was dead, citing the letter of their vows rather than their intent. Combine that with Sara's ideal form being from the time before she met Eugene pretty much seals the deal, even without her comments on him being a wrinkled old man. It sounds like whatever love they might have had was slowly strangled to death over the years, and if I were a betting man on whose hands did most of the choking, it'd be Eugene.

I'm also not seeing a whole lot of Julia in Sara beyond some obvious physical similarities. There's been a whole comic and there was only one comment that was even remotely snarky.

I still wanna know why Roy has his armour but not his sword. The sword was far more important to his identity than his armour. Roy played with his sword but not his armour. The sword would form part of his image and ideal self. It could be argued that swords are material, not spiritual, objects but so's armour. It could be argued that he didn't have his sword when he died but this is the afterlife where things are made for you. He's going to have trouble in the dungeon of challanging monsters without a decent weapon.

I'm an American, and TBH I feel the same way. Why is it surprising that a person's residual self-image isn't the old person they were when they died? My mother was quite attractive, and I never had the smallest smidgen of desire towards her. I knew she and dad were together -- and even if there wasn't, there was *just no way*. On a deep psychological level, she was completely and totally off limits. Even writing this way makes me feel kinda scuzzy.

For cryin' out loud, Julia was just as hot in life as Roy's mom is now. Yet Roy never had any problems keeping away from his sister. Why the trouble with his mom?

Respectfully,

Brian P.

It seems pretty simple to me if you remember there are no photo's in this world. Roy has grown up with his baby sister so all looks aside this is how he pictures her so when he looks at her she goes into the family=no attraction file as it were. His mother on the other hand has presumably been (going by his comment) seen as grey haired and fairly old for his entire life and now all of a sudden she's a 19 year old girl that bears no resemblance to any of the memories of his mother. This would mean while he mentally know's she's his mother emotionally speaking she'd go into the pretty girl file and then that would conflict with his mental desires and make him confused.

I don't know your situation but it would as I see it be the equivilent of meeting a highly attractive (to you) member of the opposite sex and then finding out their your brother/sister who was given up for adoption at birth. The initial emotional attraction would be followed shortly afterwards by mental discomfort and it would take some time to adjust to the knowledge and put them in the emotional no attraction category.

In regards to the comics (as I just caught up) I like the tiers of enlightenment and the attractions for Roy.

Could it be because the period of time the changes took? That mental defense, that specific blind-spot, grew up as his sister did; whereas his mother has transformed "overnight" into an unrecognisable form. Maybe, I'm no head-shrinker.

PS Warmachine: Roy's residual self image (the mental projection of his digitalspiritual self) does not include his sword because he regards the sword as an entity in and of itself, not simply as an extension of himself. As for his armour... go draw a picture of yourself. Did you draw yourself wearing clothes? )

American? I'm about 20 miles south of central London....

It's not the photo that's a bit strange, it's the realisation that dear, sweet mother probably had just as many one-night stands, relationships, drunken revels, wild parties, hangovers, etc etc etc as the girls you know (maybe more, it was the 60's after all). It's not creepy or wierd really, it's more the acknowledgement of the general march of time, the realisation that grey hair is coming soon, the sudden oh-my-god-I'm-respectable sensation and the piercing of the self-image of yourself as a young fun crazy dude.

It's not a bad thing at all, it can just be a bit jarring to look at someone you care for and know well and realise that they weren't always Mummy, they were once "that hot chick Anna down the hall". It's the need to re-evaluate one's concept of someone you know so well that's the odd feeling.

I don't think he does, anymore than a straight guy has the hots for another guy if he gives him a hug - but many straight men do feel awkward hugging another guy (leading to the infamous "leaning-forward-so-no-naughty-bits-touch" male-male hugs).

A lot of people would feel awkward lying their heads in their hot young sister's lap too. Roy's just adapting to the whole new vision and understanding of his mother that he has, and trying to link the way she looks now with the concept of "Mum" in his mind.

Also think about this....... If Roy is gonna have a one night stand in his mother's home... it would even be weirder now ;)

You are right about "mental defense" when we grow up. There have been stories of people getting adopted and accidentally meet their siblings later in life and have attraction for no reason they could understand. (we usually naturally love our family) So Roy is trying to built up defense that this person whom he does NOT physically recognize (and much younger since she is 19 and I don't think Roy is 19 anymore.. maybe 25? 30?) so it is a little awkward.

To a warrior, a weapon is an extension of himself. A warrior must be able to act with it instinctively as if it was a natural part of him. A warrior is still a warrior without weapons but being one with your weapon can be the difference between life and death. Is this obsessive? Yep. Does this make warriors annoy other people with details of their weapon? Yep. Do such people even end up talking to their weapons? Yep. When a warrior is thinking about a battle, what will they make sure they have? You guessed it.

Well, it really doesnt look like lawfull good heaven, but what was the point for the angel to "determinate" how much lawful and how much good he was?

Maybe pleasure its not forbidden for lawfull good people, just abusing them.

The problem is that people are looking into Lawful Good alignment too strict...

What is consider good?
What is part of law?

Also think about this, maybe if a person restrict and humble oneself before heading to afterlife will be rewarded. You can do whatever you want afterward and don't have consequences (because it is set up that way) but down with the living, there are consequences of such action hence the more "strict" version of the rules.

I can understand Roy's disturbance. I still feel a bit uncomfortable with other either telling me my mother is attractive/my sister or her wearing pigtails.

Imagining her back when she was "playing the field" is not necessarily the best experience one can have.

Oddly enough, when I saw "DMILF", my first thought was "Dungeon Master I'd Like to... " I mean, this is D&D, right?

Also, in strip #113 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0113.html), Sara had lighter skin than Roy and Eugene; here it's the same shade. Continuity error? Or Roy's failing memory? Or just another difference between Sara's image of herself and Roy's image of her?

This ain't Lawful Good Heaven. This is really Chaotic Good Heaven. I mean, a chance to break the incest taboo without hurting anyone? Seems like the essence of Chaotic Good to me. (Not to mention Chaotic Gross...). Check in the tavern and you'll probably find Shojo, with a legal-document cigar in his hand and a girl on his lap.

For the Lawful, it's a minor Hell.

Well, Eugene was supposedly lawful all his life, but from OOTPC we know that he spent a lot of his time hanging out in bars, getting drunk and chatting up girls and it had no influence on his lawfulness. Clearly the OOTS societies tend to have an openminded attitude when it comes to social interaction. As to the incest taboo. Maybe that is why everybody has to live with their parents for a while before they get a place of their own. Just to make sure, that they recognize their familiy and don't make mistakes. (Being lawful, they would probably not break the taboo on purpose.)

Wow, Roy's mom is hot. How did she end up with Roy's dad?!It's a biological thing. Conventionally, men always marry "up", while women marry "down", in terms of physical attractiveness. This is because biologically, men tend to seek out more attractive mating partners, in order to produce young that are attractive in turn, and will have a good chance to continue his genetic line, whereas women, again from a biological standpoint, tend to seek out men who are likely to be good protectors and providers, and the possibility that a more attractive male could get tired of being with a less attractive female and leave her for a more attractive mate causes women to subconsciously choose men "beneath" their own level of attractiveness to minimize that danger.

Note that this is a general tendency only, and it does not take into consideration many other factors that could affect it such as social environments or upbringing. It is, however, most evident when comparing people of similar standings, that there is a tendency among men to marry more attractive women and a tendency among women to marry less attractive men.

Interesting thought - we know Roy has climbed above the level of the mountain dedicated to helping people overcome their appetites.

But now Roy's mother is saying things like "this is the real me", and that isn't actually the case - the nineteen-year-old body has nothing more to do with what she is as a person as the body she had when she died. She's a soul, not a form.

Roy is obviously uncomfortable with interacting with a younger, sexier mother. Perhaps this level of the mountain is intended to help people realize that appearances aren't particularly important? Roy's mother wouldn't have progressed beyond that stage because she's so tickled at looking young again.

Or just another difference between Sara's image of herself and Roy's image of her?None really. The colour difference is basically explained in NcftPB:
(It's not really a spoiler but it's from the book so whatever :P)Rich says that when he got the proofs back for the first OOTS book, some of the colours looked bad. Like Roy's skin was too dark. So when Rich upgraded the art in this comic (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0198.html), he changed Roy's skin to make it look better in the print form. That's why he and Sara have the same skin colour now, but not before. Read No Cure, it explains better than I can :P.
Although I've already commented in this thread on the comic, I'd like to say once more that it's excellent. It's definitely one of the best strips to date. And I'm thrilled that there's now a definite three times a week update (and if one is missed, we'll get another one later). Thanks Rich. :D

I don't know your situation but it would as I see it be the equivilent of meeting a highly attractive (to you) member of the opposite sex and then finding out their your brother/sister who was given up for adoption at birth. The initial emotional attraction would be followed shortly afterwards by mental discomfort and it would take some time to adjust to the knowledge and put them in the emotional no attraction category.Or... not (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BrotherSisterIncest)...

So, at some point, wouldn't the two factions cancel each other out? If men are only marrying attractive women, but the attractive women are only marrying less-than-hot men, SOMEbody SOMEwhere isn't hooking up. :smallwink:

And those unmarried people are the attractive men and unattractive women. The attractive men presumably implement the "ideal" male reproductive strategy (as many partners as possible), while the unattractive women fail to implement the "ideal" female strategy (monogamous marriage).

Alternatively, all you really need is a theory that there are more attractive women around than men (which might be an effect of women working harder at it).

On a different topic, perhaps one's "dead" form still has the appropriate stat bonuses/penalties for age? If so, then Eugene Greenhilt is probably just unwilling to give up that Int bonus.

To all those people arguing really weird things about Roy's discomfort with his hot mum, I'm pretty sure there's a simple and considerably less skeevy explanation behind it.

He didn't know who she was at first, his first reaction on seeing her was probably checking her out. And now he can't get the memory of mentally undressing his mother out of his head.

I think it's more likely she wouldn't have progressed beyond that part of the mountain (assuming your theory is correct) because she's only been there 3 years, which is hardly a long time even in life, much less when you're dead!

True; I find it quite fascinating to think about my parents past; they both led amazing lives.
When I read the strip, the joke for me was on the fact that Roy is much more uptight than his mother. In many aspects he is a bit more like his father. And it's also funny that she, who looks older than him, thinks of him like a little boy.

The thing that occurred to me is that his mother looks a lot like a smarter version of Elan (how did she end LG by the way?). We have here a free spirit vs the straight man. I still think that the potential for jokes is there, and not in any kind of odd feeling Roy is going to have towards his mother, how misleading the tittle may sound.
