The runesmith class reads a little confusing. It implies it can be used by sorcerers, but then does not explain how its signature ability works for spontaneous casters.

Has there ever been any clarification on this?

The ability allows them to prepare spells in the form of runes. They prepare them just like a wizard would, except that they're restricted by their "spells known" rather than a full wizard spellbook. This would basically functions like Arcane Preparation (http://dnd.arkalseif.info/feats/players-guide-to-faerun--22/arcane-preparation--99/index.html), which allows spontaneous spellcasters to prepare spells in spell slots, generally for the purpose of applying metamagic feats ahead of time without increasing the casting time. In this case, you're basically using the equivalent of Arcane Preparation to cast spells with the Still Spell metamagic feat, with neither an increased casting time nor an increased spell level while doing so - the down side is that you run the risk of having your runes stolen, destroyed, or lost.
Note that the ability says that you can still prepare and cast spells in your normal fashion, so a sorcerer can still cast spontaneously -- he just doesn't get the rune magic benefit of not needing a somatic component when doing so.

That's fair to a point, until we get to this clause:

Preparing daily spells takes the same amount of time as normal preparation and requires the same amount of rest beforehand.
Sorcerers don't have a normal preparation, and therefore no normal time of how long that takes. same for preparing more runes later in the day.

Wizards (being the only core prepared arcane caster) require 1 hour in a relatively peaceful environment to prepare their spells, and the overview of divine magic says that all divine casters refers back to this saying that they take the same amount of time as a wizard (1 hour) to prepare their spells and need the same kind of relatively peaceful environment. I would say that, in general, this is the "normal" amount of time and effort for any caster who prepares spells.
As for time, the all require 8 hours of rest before preparing spells. Sorcerers may not have their own rules for spell preparation, but these ones are fairly universal across all prepared casters.

Sorcerers take no time to prepare their spells — so the normal time here is zero.

It's not worth taking Runesmith on Sorcadins. Due to the Spellsword dip which ignores 10% ASF, you can wear a lot of armors just fine. A Feycraft(500gp) or Twilight(+1 ability) Mithral Breastplate is reduced to 0 ASF, as is a Feycraft Twilight Mithral Full Plate. Alternatively, with Arcane Preperation, you can just cast Greater Luminous Armor, which both functions as Full Plate, gives an extra -4 to being hit, and scales off the Abjurant Champion levels you're planning on taking, which allows you to invest in a **REALLY** valuable +10 mithral Chain Shirt with +9 spent on random armor mods.

Additionally, if you're using Luminous Armor, and thus, not needing to wear actual armor, you can maybe try to figure out how to pick up Ascetic Mage and get your massive Charisma to AC as well. (Epic and Gestalt versions just dip 2 levels of Unarmed Swordsage for this)

I'd be a dwarf anyway and was not planning on spellsword. So, for once, the correct answer to ""How do I" isn't "Don't".
