Lesser Geas

A Lesser Geas is placed on a level 7 character. Before completing the task the character advances to level 8. Is the lesser geas broken?

Nope. Spells check for their requirements only on their casting. That being said, if DMing, I'd probably do something to indicate the geas is failing. For example, giving them a save each time the penalty should be applied, and if they succeed not applying it for that day. Or even go as far as removing the compulsion element. They can ignore the geas, but just take the penalty (essentially treating it as a bestow curse of limited duration).

Edit: Example as to why this is: Vampiric Touch's target is living creature touched. So, you touch a living creature, drain their life and kill them in the process. If this rule didn't apply, by killing them you would immediately lose the temporary HP which seems... illogical at best.
