War Caster on non-gish/spell characters?

How good is War Caster on characters who have one or two cantrips & leveled spells, but not much spellcasting past that, like magic initiate non-casters, or something like the Zariel tiefling with Ray of Frost?

Waste of a ASI, especially with the mentioned tiefling: Ray of Frost is ranged attack, so you would have a disadvantage when using it as OA, you have nothing to concentrate on, and full hands don't matter if you don't plan to be casting spells often.

Perhaps if you had BB to get stronger opportunity attack and some crowd control, but Sentinel is still better for the later.

Aye, the concentration and op attack are seriously marginal for a cantrip-and-a-bit caster to be worth a feat/ASI - doubly so on top of Magic Initiate
