So I've seen builds that try for a fool-proof way to kill mages, but what about teamwork strategies?
For example, if one teammate grabs the mage and the other casts darkness or silence, the mage has very few options.

What are other teamwork strategies to take down that mage?

I will say, antimagic field and sand in the monk and the barbarian.

Bonus points if you can make the monk the center of the spell(monks have hard time failing saves so they will keep the concentration)

One PC with counter spell and the other with Mage Slayer

Someone to cast Silence, a Sorcerer equipped with Subtle Spell, an Open Hand Monk with Mage Slayer and an NPC to dig the grave.

Just have someone take Mold Earth.

People like you are why the economy is going into recession, darn adventurers doing things themselves!

Don't forget that Darkness won't work on someone with an upcast Continual Flame (which is cheap and permanent), both spells can generally be counterspelled, and all sorts of things let you get out of grapples (or you can just cast while being grappled).

It would help to add your own counterspeller or the like to that combo. Or casting Silence in a way that prevents counterspelling (such as taking advantage of its 120 foot range).

This is soooooo level dependent. At low levels you just need two martial characters. Period.

At mid levels one of them should be a monk.

At higher levels you may want dispel magic available.

High end feeblemind.
