Hi everyone. Being a wizard is actually cool. You can do a lot of magic stuff and magically kill lot of magic enemies. Problems come with enemies with tons of HP and huge saving throws. So, being top ridicoulous spell banned (orbs for example) I thought that summoning a horde of guys Who can cast Melf’s acid arrow could be quite good against, let’s say, a greater wyrm (which is specifically what I aim ti kill). So, which monsters can cast this spell? Other SR: no spells would be welcome, of course.

Spellstitched undead minions?

Gets kinda expensive real fast though.

If there is one, and you can maximize the Summon Monster # as a lower level cast to get 5 at once... That could be some, eventually, decent DoT

Specialist spell summon giant slugs.

You need to research summon monster then get a substitution.

if orbs is your definition of a "spell that needs to be banned" i wonder how you feel about stramantle and shapechange. :smallwink:

After all an orb is just a more highly efficiant Melf's. Expecting a spell to be able to reliably do (in multiple scenarios and sircumstances) what it's supposed to do is just the criteria for a good spell (an the reason a fireball is usually not a great choice). A good spell is not necessary by definition "op" unless the level of optimisation is very low; i'd have trouble to imagine a game that's cool with summon monster line and not with orb spells though. Summoning has a lot more versatility.

My last Lich's project. To spellstich 4 Zombie Dragons and himself he literally used a medium town's whole budget and had to add some from his WBL. Originally intended as an army of lesser undead but the cost was prohibitive. :(

This is exactly what an Ooze Mephit can do (at CL 3, so 2 round duration), and they can be summoned with Summon Monster IV - though they'll only cast it once each time they are summoned, since they can cast it once per hour.

A Maximized SM VI (level 9 spell slot) guarantees 5 mephits, though that's a bit wasteful. Empowered SM VI (8th level slot) gives you (2-5) * 1.5, so 3-7(8) or so (and is strictly superior to a Maximized SM V, which gives 3).

If you want your Mephits to stay along longer, you can use Lesser Planar Binding to get one, or Planar Binding to get 3, and keep them around for multiple days (plus, they can try to summon more Mephits on their own).

Is there something who can do that once a round? Cause once a hour is indeed pretty bad

Well... there's Vhuuksssh (WoL, p.214), a unique Large Water Elemental with the Monster of Legacy acquired template. It has at will Acid Arrow, and can theoretically be summoned by Planar Ally. This assumes the unique creature exists in the campaign setting though, and that the caster is aware of its existence, and can somehow figure out how to call it specifically.

Though, yeah... that's just one creature Also, it hates summoners. That's how it got its template (killed its summoner who tried to rules-lawyer their agreement).

The DM can apply the Monster of Legacy template to any creature to tack on at-will Acid Arrow, but that requires a permissive DM to custom-tailor unique callable creatures for your purposes.

Then there's Legacy Weapons, which also draw from the same pool of potential abilities, so you can get one with at will Acid Arrow and 'donate' (i.e. throw a fight in combat) it to a minion or a callable ally, but... eh... if you're going that route you might as well just beg the DM to use the custom magic item creation guidelines to let you craft or buy an item of at will Acid Arrow.

Yeaaaah, just use the mephits.

You could craft a bunch of partially charged Melf's wands, and then just hire the local thieves guild to UMD them. Or for a bit more investment, a bunch of x/day items and summon anything capable of holding them and saying the command word.

If you go this route though, don't forget about the cost of paying for spellcasting, resulting in a minimum of 60gp per CL 3 acid arrow, not including any costs for dragging the wizard into a dangerous situation.
