So, I've got long, luscious locks of hair. I plan on donating it, because lord knows I don't do anything with it, and while the go-to would usually be Locks of Love for me (since I live in the US-don't know if Locks of Love is international) I remember vaguely that they weren't on the up and up.

I'm about to do some googling, but I figured I'd also ask the Playground if anyone knows if Locks of Love is a good choice to donate to. Thanks all for any advice!

Edit: A bit of googling later shows that they should be a good choice. If that's incorrect, please let me know! I'd hate to have this backfire.

Locks of Love and Wigs for Kids are the two big ones I know of, and both are relatively good. They also do have specific requirements, and not necessarily the same requirements, so absolutely check with them first to make sure your hair makes the cut. Also, make sure to find a place that will do donation cuts, because there's a process they need to be familiar with to go through. You can also do a St. Baldrick's event (https://www.stbaldricks.org/blog/post/donate-your-hair-in-5-easy-steps), but you may not want to go to that extreme, since that's usually a full-on head shave.

The big thing here is research before you go in, really. Also, it's great of you to do that!

For me, this would seem the only really good reason to grow my hair long.

Not sure how many kids would want greying hair, mind you.

Most hair that gets donated to Locks of Love and similar get thrown away to be honest.

All of the hair you leave at the hairdresser gets thrown away.

Because most hair that is donated to them don't fit their guidelines, IIRC. Research really is key here.

It even says that right in the HuffPost "article". Some years ago there was apparently enough of a hubbub about Locks of Love throwing away and selling hair, that Snopes looked into it (https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/donated-hair/).
