Actually, merely breathing in a past time could theoretically be fatal to the future. Think about it, the vessel you arrived in--or, if you arrived alone, your lungs--would be filled with the polluted air of your original time. All the modern diseases and bacteria that do not affect us any longer may well be fatal to the people and creatures of the time you travelled to, as it is likely that at least some of them evolved only after that time. Mutant strains of bacteria and viruses are creating themselves every second, and you just snagged a lungful, took 'em back in time, and unleashed them upon an unsuspecting population. Nicely done.

Actual pointers:

Try to stay out of the crazy little uprisings that constantly rise out of the SMBG. You may find yourself a rebellion of one.

Plan ahead: Try to get holiday avatars before the major crunch.
