Obviously there is a strong Oni / samurai vibe going on here

so samurai FIghter or could another class be good fit

and what Race.

also what type of axe should it be?

Kensei would also work.

For the axe, intelligent weapon with some spells. Or just a good weapon but when the owner dies, the axe turns back into an actual Oni. A cool two phase fight!

If you go Oni way, the class could be wizard that did capture de Oni ( and he fights using tenser's transformation or self-buff to go with th axe)

That is perfect for a Half-Orc Berserker Barbarian. They benefit most from a d12 damage die because of their racial Savage Criticals and it synergizes well with the Barbarian's Brutal Critical feature. Berserker Barbarian to match the theme if it is a Berserker Axe and for the BA attack when Frenzying.
